Totem Talk: Restoration PvP in patch 4.0.1

I think we can all agree that this has been a very busy few weeks, first with patch 4.0.1 going live and then the epic event that is BlizzCon 2010. I want to take a second and thank everyone who stopped by our WoW insider reader meetup. I got the opportunity to meet with quite a few of you, and it was a great experience. I'm hoping that next year even more of the shaman community can make it out to the convention -- who knows, maybe we can take over an area for all our shamanistic shenanigans!
Last week I went though and detailed the changes that the restoration shaman faces in the recent patch. We talked about glyphs, spell changes and the healing mechanic changes we will encounter. This week, I thought we could talk about something that I've been finding a lot of enjoyment in since patch 4.0.1: restoration shaman in PvP.
Since the patch, I've found myself healing through battlegrounds more and more frequently. Before the patch, healing in PvP was always something I found fun, but the patch seemed to ignite that need to competitively heal again. The patch gave us quite a few things for use in PvP.
I'm rubber and you're glue ...
One of the biggest changes to come with the patch was the change to the glyph system. Not only did we gain the ability to use even more glyphs, but many of our glyphs underwent some changes. Now while I talked a little bit about this last week, that was more with PvE in mind.
Glyph of Grounding Totem is probably my favorite out of all the changes in our glyphs in regard to PvP. While the glyph does have some use in regular dungeons, heroics and raids, it really shines in battlegrounds and arenas. Without the glyph, Grounding Totem simply absorbs or negates any spell cast at a friendly target in range of the totem, with the exception of area of effect spells. With the glyph, however, instead of just absorbing the spell, the totem throws it right back at the caster! Imagine the face on that mage when he goes to sheep you and instead of you turning into a fluffy harmless mass, he himself becomes a critter! The totem was always strong in PvP when used to deflect power-charged attacks, but with the glyph, it just becomes even more ridiculously useful.
Glyph of Shocking is really nice for PvP if for no other reason than you simply have a lot less haste in your gladiatorial gear compared to your raiding sets. Stamina and resilience keep you alive and by my understanding tend to be more important, which leaves haste almost on the back burner. In arenas and battlegrounds, even as a healer, you will be using shocks quite a bit. Making sure your triggered global cooldown helps to make sure that you can cast Wind Shear that much faster if needed or get that heal started even sooner. It may not sound like a lot, but in player-vs.-player combat, 1 second versus 1.5 seconds can be the difference between life and death. Paring this with Glyph of Flame Shock and Glyph of Frost Shock gives you that extra versatility and survivability that restoration shaman are notorious for in PvP.
Glyph of Hex is a wonderful thing in battlegrounds and arenas as well. Fights are hectic in PvP, and anything you can do to gain the advantage can help save victory from the clutches of defeat. As healers, we are capable of taking an enemy out of combat for a little bit with Hex. The problem is that most players have their PvP tokens -- or a racial ability -- that lets them break that CC early. Being able to recast hex 15 seconds sooner can help push the battle back in your favor.
Stoneclaw Totem is an underused hero in PvP, in my opinion, often overshadowed by Earthbind Totem and Tremor Totem. The totem lets you protect your other totems by placing a damage-absorbing shield around them that absorbs around 9,451 damage before they expire -- rather important when most of your totems only have 5 health. The glyph allows you to extend that protective shield to you. Who doesn't like absorbing almost 4,000 damage every 20 seconds?!
Glyph of Healing Stream Totem is amazing for restoration shaman in PvP and PvE. Adding resistance to everyone in range for fire, frost and nature damage can help keep your teammates alive that much longer. Glyph of Ghost Wolf should also not be overlooked. Mobility is key in many situations, and being able to out run an aggressor or get into healing range faster is always a good thing. Keep in mind with the patch, we can use Ghost Wolf indoors. That really comes in handy when you're trying to break out of the tunnel in Warsong Gulch.
If you go through the catalog of glyphs we have, and look at the old and the new ones, you can get some very interesting combinations going and have a lot of fun.
That shaman has talent!
With the changes to glyph, we also got our new talent trees in the patch. Many of the new talents really play well into the role of a PvP healer.
Ancestral Resolve is a new talent that reduces the amount of damage a shaman sustains by 10 percent while casting any spell. That 10 percent adds up pretty quickly, especially if you have any form of resilience gear. I picked up this talent for my PvP spec and have been absolutely loving it. I mean, who doesn't love something that keeps them alive a little bit longer?
Spark of Life is another new talent that not only increases the amount of healing you do, but also increases the amount of healing you receive. This includes healing from all sources, so if you Earth Shield yourself, it will heal you for an additional 15 percent every time it triggers. This effect does stack with other heal-altering effects like Glyph of Earth Shield, Nature's Blessing and the bonus healing triggered from Focused Insight. Also consider that with Cleansing Waters, every time you remove a curse or other magical effect, you heal the target and you can keep yourself alive for quite a while, all the time really annoying warlocks and shadow priests.
Telluric Currents is also pretty amazing in PvP right now. There is that basic rule that if you don't have mana, you can't heal after all. With TC at max rank, you can throw a Lightning Bolt costing a mere couple of hundred mana, and in return, get well over 1,000 back. I've been using this to regen mana whenever possible in battlegrounds and have really fallen in love with it there.
As far as a specific PvP spec, play around with your points a little bit. You may find a spec that works well for you depending on if you are going solo or doing preformed groups. Personally, since I've been running with preformed groups I've been going with this build, and it has been serving me well. I don't find myself with too many mana problems, so I dropped TC for now, but the results have been very good. I do, however, respec and pick it back up if I'm just going to randomly enter battlegrounds alone.
Honestly, at this point I feel almost impossible to kill in battlegrounds. It is a lot of fun to not be completely killed within the first 20 seconds of combat, and lately, I've just been having a lot of fun with it. How about you? Have you guys been doing any PvP after the patch? What do you think of it?

I was healing as restro pvp a bit before the patch came out, but now all i can seem to do it blow people up as ele. A lot of fun at doing that compared to healing atm, but that's just what I think.

You are WAY off on Stoneclaw Totem. Yes, it has 9,500 HP but it only shields your other totems for 1085. 1085 x 4 = 4340. It's still a good glyph to have, but not nearly as good as you make it out to be.
In regards to Grounding Totem, I'd personally leave it unglyphed. 4 absorbs per minute > 1 spell reflect per minute IMO.
JC_Icefox Oct 27th 2010 2:08AM
I'd argue Glyphed Grounding would be very situation specific, but still useful. For skirmishes, it would be far too circumstantial and you might waste it accidentally. However, for guarding a node in EoE or Arathi where you see the attackers coming, it allows for much better planning.
The old glyph system would have made this impossible, but if you know you'll be moving to a new space or going offense, you can just Dust in a new glyph and go in 3 seconds.
Admittedly, I don't use grounding enough in PvP at all, as I usually default to spell haste, but these new options are very compelling.

I'm a bit confused here - Wowhead reports this http://www.wowhead.com/spell=5730 which states the amount the shield can absorb is (up to) 9451 damage, which supports Joe's OP, yet you are saying only 1085?
I'm levelling a resto shaman at present, so have no personal experience of this at level 80, so what is the definitive answer? Perhaps 9451 is the level 85 spell?
Thanks.

The author is total noob at pvp. He doesn't know jack about what he is talking about.
Grokmar is right.
Stoneclaw absorbs some dmg etc etc, but something more like 4k, not 40k.
DId the author even think before posting? 40k is more than any shaman's hp atm.
Anyhow, any true pvp always MADE USE of this totem. Stating that stoneclaw is 'underused' is so noob of him.
Grounding totem is also super important, and used super often. Adding 45 sec cd on it would ruin shamans of any spec in pvp regardless whether the glyph makes it absorb or reflect the spell. So, no, any good pvp'er will not take the grounding glyph.
So, please, Joe (or whatever), please stop making pvp articles. Go back to pve and be happy.
The only person on this pve website who knows what he is talking about is the guy who writes the gladiator column.
Everyone else = go back to killing dragons.

I'm with Alternun, I'm a little confused. The spell on wowhead says:
Stoneclaw Totem *Level 80*
6% of base mana
Instant cast 20 sec cooldown
Tools:
Earth Totem
Summons a Stoneclaw Totem with 14111 health at the feet of the caster for 15 sec that taunts creatures within 8 yards to attack it. Enemies attacking the Stoneclaw Totem have a 50% chance to be stunned for 3 sec. The Stoneclaw Totem also protects your other active totems with a shield that absorbs up to 9451 damage.
The Glyph says it creates a shield on you for 4 x's the shield it places on totems. Wouldn't that be 37,804?
Grokmar Oct 31st 2010 11:52PM
I can't explain why the tooltip is worded the way it is, I can only go by my in game experience with the glyph. An easy way to test it (if you don't believe me) is to glyph Stoneclaw then duel another shaman. Ask them to cast only Flame Shock and Lava Burst and you tell me if it absorbs the entire Lava Burst.
Grokmar Oct 31st 2010 11:55PM
Also if you look back over the article you'll notice that the amount of damage absorbed has been edited.

You've got my attention.
I talked with you briefly about healing in BGs at the WoW Insider party. How, even though it is often a thankless job that often goes unnoticed, the ability to (sometimes single-handedly) turn the tide in your faction's favor is reason enough to keep queuing. I hope this column inspires more people to try it out.
I've been healing in BGs for a little over a year now (mainly on my disc priest), and I've always had a lot of fun with it. Those first few days of Patch 4.0.1 certainly ramped things up quite a bit: if I wasn't staying mobile, if we weren't grouping-up on flag runs, we were all screwed. I've noticed a lot more people willing to work cohesively as a group and discussing strat in chat because, yes, it's been totally nutso. But adopting this kind of playstyle can only mean big, big things for rated BGs. I really look forward to it.
And after reading this column... resto shaman PvP? I'm *so* on it.
Pat Oct 26th 2010 10:09PM
I haven't really taken resto for a spin in battlegrounds.
I've done a bit of world pvp as Ele though, mostly against Moonkins who think it's amusing to chase me.
The grounding totem glyph while useful has that extra long cooldown attached to it and in my opinion makes it almost useless in a fast paced battle.
I mean.. Warriors have Spell reflect and it's on a 10 second CD.. Can Shamans not get somthing similar from this totem/glyph combination? I'd even be happy with a 20 - 25 second CD.
The healing stream glyph is a favourite of mine though, Even as Ele it's nice to throw down and help out. Switching it with Mana spring when needed.
I'm yet to try out Stoneclaw and I agree it is underused. I think that is just out of habit though. I might give it a try tonight and see what I can pull off with that shield :)
Nice article Joe!

So I'm sitting here on the couch thinking "ya know, I want to watch Gladiator". But hey, the DVD is in my sons room and he's sleeping so that's out. So I decide instead to check in on my favorite WoW blog and what do I find?
. . . You're such a tease.

Are you not entertained?
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?
IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?
podxvost Oct 27th 2010 4:13AM
Wow, 40k absorb? Mmk. Really makes me wonfer how much you know about shamans in pvp, ohh and grounding glyph? /facepalm There is a reason the pvp set bonus reduces its cooldown

I'll definitely be leveling my Paladin, Druid, and Shaman to 85 come the new year so I can do some PvP healing at 85. I'll be interested to see which one feels the most, well, overpowered. Resto Druids had their time to be OP in Wrath PvP, imo, so maybe Pallies or Shaman will be envied in Cata.
Jay Oct 27th 2010 4:18AM
I come from a background of playing healers, and have spent alot of time in pvp. I played resto druid and disc priest. Come Cataclysm I decided to switch mains and have leveled a shaman as elemental and switched to resto as I dinged 80.
Yesterday for the first time I took my new shaman for a spin in bgs and I got COMPLETELY torn apart by more or less all melee classes. And you say that you're unkillable, I must be doing something seriously wrong. I know the toon is in crap gear but i never experienced something like this with the druid or priest. I just can't get away from melee classes. Earthbind totem is the only way I know and all melee classes can close that gap with some ability and i end up stunned or dazed or whatever. I'm doing fine against ranged classes.
What should I do when attacked by melee classes as a resto shaman? I'm missing my shields and fears :(
Rob Oct 27th 2010 7:23AM
Im not going to lie, if you have freshly dinged then your gear is going to be a massive part of why you cant live and escape.
I dont personally play resto, but i have a disc pri and holy pala. After the patch i started collecting PvP gear on my priest and to begin with i was still torn apart, but after gaining 4/5 wrath and some other wrath offset i have found i am also almost unkillable. Mostly i factor this down to the resi and huge heals i can dishout.
From what i can see of resto shamans most werent too bothered with 'escaping melee', all the shamans i saw just healed through any of the damage they recieved. Throwing a hex in places with Lava bursts.
I would say once you obtain a nice amount of resi and stam you will find melee alot less munishing.
Just something that made me laugh.. met a resto with close to 2k resi. his earth shield healed more than any damage he recived from a boomkin in a duel. the shammy resi = like a 60% reduction in dmg :L
Quez Oct 27th 2010 1:24PM
Sadly, wow is an extremely gear-centric game regarding pvp. If you have great gear, and stink, you will still be decent at pvp against lesser geared opponents. At 72 my guild ran me through Black Temple and Hyjal, and combined with the gear I got from honor, I was in full epics in 2 hours. This was right as the patch dropped, and since then (now 78), I've been an unstoppable beast in battlegrounds, easily healing nyself and 5 comrades through full assaults of enemies. I had as many hps as 79s when I was 72, and was able to stay alive at nodes or with the flag for lengthy amounts of time while being beat on by 3 to 5 melee classes. Gear matters. A lot. A bit of skill is helpful, and the 2 combined are elite.
Jay Oct 28th 2010 2:16AM
Now when a few days have past and I have accumulated a bunch of wrathful epics I've seen an huge up in my survivability. So it had to do with gear. But then I will claim that resto shamans are more gear dependent than i.e. my disc priest which I just took in to pvp not long ago from being a pure pve toon and semi-bad gear, since it's an alt. Never experienced such problems with the priest.
Now shaman healing in battlegrounds is a pleasure. And it's also nice to get tells about good healing despite my low gear score, as I've been told a bunch of times during the last few days :)
