The Queue: The one where Fox tells you about all the [REDACTED]

The powers than be here at WoW Insider are still licking their BlizzCon-inflicted wounds, so they requested I once again write The Queue. And since Holisky, Sacco, et al. probably won't even have the energy to edit this, I'm spilling the beans on what happened at BlizzCon 2010. Not the boring stuff. The awesome, seedy stuff that could get everyone fired.
First of all, I cannot believe what happened after [REDACTED] ended. [REDACTED] stayed a little bit after, and once we all got a few photos, all of us took turns [REDACTED]ing in the [REDACTED]. You know how [REDACTED] seemed awful friendly during the [REDACTED]? Yeah, you guessed it, he was totally [REDACTED]. Like, really [REDACTED].
On a somewhat related note, I'd really appreciate it if those of you who were taking the pictures of me when I was [REDACTED]ing [REDACTED] would stop uploading them to Facebook. Or at least stop tagging me in them. I mean, my grandmother can see that stuff. Come on.
Oh, and P.S.: [REDACTED]'s hair smelled exactly the way you'd have expected it to -- like [REDACTED].
[Nice try, Fox. – Ed.]
Dark Finch asked:
Does WoW Insider plan to redo the "(Place Spec Here) 101" articles to match the current talent trees and abilities? If so, will you do this before or after Cataclysm launches?
The good news is that you shouldn't see a whole heck of a lot of major changes for individual specs when Cataclysm is launched -- almost all of that was a part of patch 4.0.1. There's no reason why you can't start planning for that now. In fact, most of the info you're going to be looking for is currently available on the site. (Cue a plug for the patch 4.0.1 guide I wrote for shadow priests in Spiritual Guidance two weeks ago.)
WoW Insider has an awful lot of neat stuff planned for the Cataclysm launch (Tuesday, Dec. 7). Class-specific information will definitely play a part, so don't worry about that.
Donny J. Canup asked:
Is Mount Hyjal supposed to be phased when you finish all the quests in the zone as you have actually made a difference in that zone once you are done with it?
I think you've hit upon on of the main things I found lacking with quests in vanilla -- there was seldom a real sense of accomplishment doing them. You're supposedly doing a lot of cool stuff (in between stints of collecting wolf pelts in exchange for two pieces of silver, of course), but the in-game world never appreciates it. Or, in the case of opening the AQ gates, you participate in a massive world event and have an epic experience ... all at the expense of those who follow you and join the game later, totally missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime event.
In Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard started doing some experimentation with phasing, especially in Icecrown. The developers took the feedback they got, which I presume was almost entirely comprised of variations of, "I love feeling like I made a difference but where did all my friends go," and put it to work in Cataclysm. And what you get, ultimately, are areas like Vashj'ir and Mount Hyjal.
As you progress, you're asked to do quests. Some are standard busy work (kill eight [x] and four [y]), but many have you actively participating in saving the zone (and indirectly, the world). And the world around you changes to reflect that. When you start Vashj'ir, for example, you're given this feeling of totally being alone ... until you start finding some survivors. They tell you about other survivors, and all of a sudden, you've got a makeshift "hideout" populated with quest givers and merchants that didn't exist before you started. This continues throughout the zone, significantly blurring the line between MMORPG and a standard console RPG.
Questing in Cataclysm is a great feeling unique to the expansion. The only downside is that "but where did all my friends go" part didn't go away -- it only got worst. On the bright side, though, there's an icon next to your party members' names in Cataclysm to indicate which ones are stuck in a different phase.
Gravity13 asked:
Will the levels of Scholomance, Stratholme and other old world instances be changed in 4.0.3 or Cataclysm?
Yes, though the changes are far more epic than just having the enemy levels changed. The instances and the associated quests have changed to reflect what's been going on in the world since Cataclysm hit.
I don't want to spoil too much of the story, but you'll be working with the Argent Crusade to sweep through the instance and reclaim it from the Scourge. With the Lich King fallen, the Scarlet Crusade is no longer a factor in the instance ... unless you count their reanimated corpses, which are now controlled by Balnazzar. It seems fitting that they've suffered what they feared the most.
Not that you asked, but my favorite redone-for-4.0.3 instance is probably Stockades. Then again, I'm the type who eats /facepalm moments up like they were candy. Forest ... merely ... setback!

In other words, Zerg seduction.

I am horrified that you don't know Kerrigan! Yes, horrified!
This really shouldn't surprise me, I know not everyone plays all of Blizzard's games like I do, but...gah! "The figure"????? She's one of Blizzard's flagship characters! As important as Arthas ever was, if not more so! (I'm going with more so.)
I forgive you for your ignorance. It's ok. Go play Starcraft! I'm gonna go cry in a corner now.

Two questions for the Power Queuers:
First, Is patch 4.0.3 going to go to the PTR, or is the beta pretty much where all the testing on that patch will be done?
And second, is [Sacco's Hair] REALLY a GM weapon??
Skarn Oct 27th 2010 11:35PM
Random guess: 4.0.3 will NOT be on the PTR. If it is, it's gonna have to hit soon.
Tri Oct 28th 2010 9:03AM
I think that since 4.0.3 is basically the same as cataclysm, just with certain things turned off - I doubt it'll need to be tested more than the entire Cata Beta has already done..

I haven't heard anything about the Brood of Nozdormu, other than that the Scepter quest is going away -- will we still be able to earn rep with them, and will it be through (oh please oh please oh please) some other method than grinding thousands of bugs for their carapaces?
Cyrus Oct 27th 2010 4:23PM
The best way to get rep with the Brood of Nozdormu is farming AQ40. Most mobs give rep on every kill through neutral or maybe even higher, and bosses drop Qiraji Lord's Insignia tokens that can be turned in for 500 rep all the way to exalted.
Most of this probably can't be soloed even at 80, but with five or so level 80s it's probably much easier and quicker to get up to neutral by killing mobs, and then to get well into honored or revered by turning in all the tokens from the boss at once. I don't know if this will be possible after Cataclysm, but even if not, you still have probably about a month or so until it ends.

Guess this is the [REDACTED] place I could ask [REDACTED], If I wanted to submit a pretty [REDACTED] piece of fan art exclusive to [REDACTED] wow insider, where would [REDACTED] start?
Thanks again [REDACTED].

After watching the live raid at blizzcon I was wondering if paragon had there toons buffed to 85 or were there characters still at the current lvl max? Also when blizzard does an event like the live raid do they just copy the intended toons to a special server?
Josin Oct 27th 2010 3:23PM
Any word on the time lapse between Wrath and Cataclysm? I've heard reports from the beta for anywhere from 2-5 years in the timeline.
For those of us who enjoy roleplay, this presents a tremendous opportunity, but at the same time, it's always a plus to have the chance to lay some good groundwork to explain the changes that happen after the time jump.

So my brother tells me that in patch 4.0.3., Deathwing is going to be flying around, killing everything, and also that if you get killed, you get a feat of strength. Is this true? And if it is, how will i know where to be in order to commit suicide?

Fox needs to write articles more often.
Fox Van Allen Oct 27th 2010 5:28PM
"Yeaaaaaah, more articles from Fox!"
"Yes! More articles!"
"Also, pay Fox more!"
"WHOOO bigger paychecks for Fox!"
"Awesome also let's uprate this comment to support Fox getting more money!"
"Yay! Fox getting money!"

So hey can we rename FoK to the much more satisfying and handsome, FoK Van Allen? Please? And I mean that in the alliterative sense!!

As mentioned in this article about phasing, I'm curious to know from all you beta players out there, do more zones feel like you've accomplished something when all the quests are done (as in phasing) or is this feature only really seen in the higher level questing zones? It would be great now to do some starting zone quests, knock them all out and see the world change with every quest you turn in. I wasn't sure if this was only in the higher level areas (Vashj'ir and Mount Hyjal) as mentioned in the article.
Cephas Oct 27th 2010 4:01PM
There's a lot of the accomplishing stuff through phasing happening in a lot of the new 1-60 stuff, not just the higher-level zones. It doesn't happen with every quest or even every hub, though. They mostly save it for when it's really cool or the plot of a quest chain makes it necessary.

Dear The Queue,
I heard you might be getting a new comment system... I'd like a login button I can easily find; to be able to change my password, profile, and picture again; and dynamic comment loading rather than having to reload the entire page to see more comments. You can keep the pony.
Your lovable rascally rogue,
