I am Forsaken by RedEye Lobine won second place runner-up in the BlizzCon 2010 machinima contest. It is the story of a Gilnean apothecary whose life became devastated by a series of tragedies. Seeking to find a new start in life, he decided to move to nearby Lordaeron. You can imagine how that turned out.
RedEye obviously put quite a bit of work into the composition of this piece, and I'm glad to see it did well at the contest. It was a very tough competition this year, with many fantastic videos. It can be tough to tell a good Forsaken story, but obviously the judges felt Lobine pulled it off. Congratulations! Interested in the wide world of machinima? Sorry, I disagree. It's nice with the dark story and all, but it's just so stereotypical "emo" (for lack of a better word) that it's just loses it's charm to me :)
Still, like I said, it would be nice to see a follow up in which his Daughter (now a Worgen) would " end" his suffering, and save his former homeland :)
This is EXACTLY how the forsaken feel, that's why I dislike that faction so much.
Hehe. Honestly, they are the one faction whose motivations make me actively dislike them. I couldn't play horde because of them, though I really emphasize with orcs and tauren.
Sorry, but I just can't sympatise with the Forsaken, because all they are is a bunch of emo's that constantly expect you to feel sympathy for them, yet are not willing to give it back.
Had they shown some more "humanity" in their quests, or at least not pretend themselves to be victims, or say that the Alliance "didn't reckognise their rights" while actively murdering and genociding others, then I might have actually started liking them.
Oh well, I guess it gives my future Worgen an monstrous adversary, both on the ouside and inside, to kill :)
Looking forward to seeing my future Worgen disperse some justice! ;)
The point is this video is vastly superior to the winner, which is a boring 80s movie, nice guy beats out hunk for hot chick, how incredibly original.
This however is very original and there was quite a lot more work put into it, which I admire a lot more than a cheesy thing using mostly in-game animations.
The Forsaken are not really asking for "sympathy" from the other races, they are asking for help from the horde races but not sympathy.
Think about it this way, the Prince of your kingdom just starting killing people, you try to run but your neighbor just lock the door and pretended to not be home. You get killed and raised as the living dead, and when you all of a sudden get your free will back, you go and kill the guy who did it to you, so....who the hell is next on the list?
Just because you turned into Wolves doesn't mean we are going to forget you ignored us in our time of need!
The technical work is impressive enough. But ultimately, I think the visceral response some have to this is due more to their identifying with their undead characters than with the merits of the machinima itself-- in other words, to it's fan-service qualities. To me it just says, "Hey, I'm an Undead, now I hate everyone."
Yeah, that's me, the eternal party-pooper. Sorry, I can't help it.
Let me clarify, because I don't think I chose my words very carefully. Technically and artistically this is very very good. (The voice-over work starts a little wonky IMO, but quickly recovers itself.) It's visually very appealing, even beautiful. But as with some of Redeye's other work that I've seen (I haven't seen that many of them) it's storyline is too fan-service to appeal to me, a non-horde/non-forsaken character player. YMMV, and the "pages of raves" I anticipate are because it will appeal to lots of players.
I personally do agree with you on this and that the flow of this movie could be considered a cliche. I feel you actually that your comment is spot on the movie, but remember that there was a 3 minute time limit so the complexity of the movie that we could take it to was very limited. We actually had to cut down A LOT on the first draft of the script. I really appreciate honest feedback with proper backing up so thanks for posting this!
I liked that it told such an in depth tale without needing to spell it all out for us; reminiscent of the famous six-word story, "For sale: baby shoes, never used." I didn't get the impression of, "Rawr, forsaken are badass" in the slightest. I saw it as a story of someone losing their humanity in a very sad way.
i'm definitely a horde fan but i don't care for the forsaken much at all. never played one, never planning to, etc. i think choosing to judge it by those terms is a mistake in the first place.
you said it's impressive both technically and artistically, and that it's even beautiful. shouldn't that be enough? i get what you're saying but it's not like it's a video of an undead rogue killing a bunch of gnome mages. maybe it's a little fanservicey, but not nearly to the point where only forsaken fanboys can appreciate it.
It looks fantastic, no doubt. The voice over sounds like the guy who does the Gandalf impressions on YouTube (Fresh Prince song, and others). But, I think that it's also the downfall - it's all voiceover, the whole time. Love Rocket told a story without hardly any words. Not that it's always better that way, but sometimes you can explain too much.

this really should've won the contest.
just sayin.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is a fantastic movie, and certainly better than the Love Rocket, imo.

My only issue with this is it could've used a soundtrack, or if it did have a soundtrack one that added a bit more ambience.

Agree. I saw it at Blizzcon and it haunts me still.

I have to agree. That scene with Thoradin's Wall in Hillsbrad Foothills is beautiful.

This express EXACTLY how a forsaken feels, that's why i love that faction so much :D

It's a good video, better than the winner, but I wasn't blown away by it.
Thius Oct 27th 2010 12:15PM
Honestly, this video should've won first place. Even the third place winner was better than Love Rocket, in my opinion.

IB4 pages and pages of raves.
