Must-have PvP talents for hunters in 4.0.1, Part 2

Think of survival as a toolbox spec, with multiple methods to punish prey. While beast masters deal the beatdown with their angry red pets and marksmen pour on the pain from afar, survivalists use a variety of tools to achieve their ends. Survival hunters play a finesse game, relying on their traps to set off a synergy of procs and usually comport themselves fairly well in close range.
- Hunter vs. Wild This tribute to television's most popular survivalist is simply a great, uncomplicated talent to have in the new, stamina-intensive PvP environment. It's all about having a lot of health, and a 10 percent stamina boost delivers that.
- Survival Tactics You'll want Survival Tactics to make sure your traps aren't duds. This also ensures you can use Disengage every 16 seconds when glyphed with Glyph of Disengage (major). Both are equally important to survival PvP.
- Trap Mastery There's so much heavy investment this shallow into the survival tree already, but you'll want Trap Mastery mostly for the extended duration of Ice Trap (Freezing Trap will break sooner in PvP than its intended duration) and the bonus snakes from Snake Trap. Depending on your playstyle, you'll want to use glyphs that enhance the trap you use the most. Glyph of Ice Trap (major) seems like a minor boost at an additional 2-yard radius, but the area of effect snare is extremely powerful in the battlegrounds, where Ice Traps can be laid at key choke points. Glyph of Freezing Trap (major) is powerful when used to crowd control and kite on a one-on-one situation while Glyph of Snake Trap (major) raises the survivability of your snakes which are easy, low health targets for AoE spells. If you're so inclined, there's even Glyph of Immolation Trap (major) to translate into better damage in an environment where DoTs can be dispelled. Your choice of glyphs in this case should reflect your playstyle and your favored trap in PvP.
- Entrapment A talent that makes your Ice and Snake Traps apply an AoE root? Yes, please. What? We're only on tier 2 of the survival tree? And we've already invested 12 talent points? Unfortunately, yes. There's just a lot of PvP goodness here and Entrapment is freakishly effective in the battlegrounds, where it's easy to lure groups of opponents into one easy-to-trap area.
- Counterattack This talent simply doesn't get a lot of love from hunters because it's so situational, especially with low parry values. However, it helps make Deterrence shine and saves the use of Disengage by keeping opponents immobile and allowing you to create some distance the old-fashioned way -- by running away. If you have a point left over, consider putting it into Counterattack.
- Resourcefulness More trapping means more killing.
- Mirrored Blades This is the most PvP-centric talent in the tree and defines a survival hunter's finesse. Optimizing its use will require good judgment and timing, especially with Deterrence's long cooldown. Being able to use Mirrored Blades to reflect a Cyclone or a Polymorph is priceless, so find an addon to alert you to critical spells being cast your way.
- Wyvern Sting and Noxious Stings The survival tree is all about control, requiring a completely different approach to PvP compared to the other two trees, and Wyvern Sting is a cornerstone ability that makes survivalists far more capable of dictating the combat environment. In the battlegrounds, use it to take healers out from play or stop flag carriers in their tracks.

Focus killed hunter pvp. Not going to bother reading :(
Lemons Oct 28th 2010 4:46PM
So you can't pvp because you were finally given a real resource to manage? You're not helping the stereotype.

Or maybe it's more the fact that hunter arena PvP (it's still part of the game whether you like it or not) has been severely hindered and is likely down for considering the prospect of sitting in a spot and steady shoting to get back your focus is absolute ludicrous. Continuing what typically happened in LK, hunters getting focused, steady shoting will be near impossible and we'll just have to deal with our 4 (or so) focus per second.
Does that explain to you why focus was a fail?
PS. I'm all for focus, just make sure it works in all aspects of the game before implementing something like that.

Focus killed hunter pvp? considering balanced pvp isn't even out yet and won't truly be implemented until lvl 85 I would say that's one of the more ridiculous things i've read in weeks. I think you need to fig out more what your rotation is and what to do in the meantime.

hey jaxrc55, you heard of aspect of the fox? you know the one that lets us cast steady and cobra shot while moving? heard of concussive shot? nothing like a good ol' 70% movement reduction to cast SS or CS if stupid enough to not use Aot Fox. Smart enough to use a spider in PVP? theyve got a nifty little ability to trap people in a web. sounds like a good time to fire off a SS or CS. if you dont like spiders how does a dog sound? theyve got an ability that'll trap the enemy. Wyvern Sting? Scatter Shot? Traps? If you were a good arena team, you'd find a way to trap them. that would be a good thing to do. heck, if you get sucked into melee range you could use freezing trap, get about 30 yards away, use concussive shot, then unload on their faces. All of this only if your stupid enough not to use Aot Fox. seems like helps to solve a lot of the Focus-PvP woes.

Even with the talents, hunter pvp still feels cumbersome.
Galestrom Oct 28th 2010 4:53PM
I can't say it's only limited to PvP. It's like the timing of everything is just off. I'm sure it'll feel better at 85, but I'm seriously considering retiring the hunter for early part of Cata.
I know, blasphemy. :(

Great article Zach!! It really open my eyes because actually, I have finally got back into PvP since Vanilla and I am having an absolute blast. Bought myself all shiny good PvP gear and specced BM with my spirit beast (free heal? Yes please). After reading, I might just change out a few glyphs and talents, thanks! Keep up the awesome work! :)

Should probably make clear that Bestial Wrath only protects the pet from CC these days. The article makes it seem like both Hunter and Pet are CC immune.

Article edited to reflect the change to Beast Within. Thanks!
crystal.dragon.esmeradin Oct 28th 2010 4:52PM
I've had no problem pvping as a hunter on both of mine. While the orc does better with MM than my belf, my belf for some reason does so much better as BM in the battlefield. I might change out some of my talents in BM and MM to better suit..thanks for these breakdowns!

There is a lot wrong with this post in the Beast Mastery section. Path finding is bad especially with other points you can put elsewhere (aspect of cheetah and pack are the best way to annoy anyone in a bg) I.e just wasted points. Improved mend pet won't save your pet in a bg, 5 players on it, and it's going to die. The removal of debuffs is really unimportant. Bestial wrath does not provide cc immunity anymore. Not to be rude, but this post isn't really accurate in the Beast Mastery section.
Zach Oct 28th 2010 5:34PM
I can't believe I missed that. I haven't played in BM throughout 4.0.1 (enjoying Survival atm) and missed out on that change to Beast Within. Thanks so much for pointing it out -- I edited the article to reflect that. It IS a major omission on my part. On the other hand, I believe I did mention that pets simply don't get focused in battlegrounds. Their survivability is pretty high and the only thing you really watch out for is random debuffs thrown its way. Thanks for reading!

Actually I believe the boot enchant tuskar's vitality gives you some mobility. Not as fast as pathfinding but without having to spend points on it which are more of a premium now. Also note in Cata there will be boot enchants with agility and speed increase. If you really want to mess with people in pvp roll engineer. nothing worse than a pally who bubbles and uses the rocket boots :(
Galestrom Oct 28th 2010 6:46PM
I dunno man; at least according to my anecdotal experience, it's:
Rule #1 vs. BM Hunter; Take out his pet.
I know mine certainly doesn't seem to last long; regardless of the spec I'm in. =)

Thank you very much for a very nice and well put together article. However, putting together a hunter PvP guide in our current state is like holding a seminar on how to run a 30 mile marathon for people in wheelchairs.
Bliz has been ignoring, and actively deleting, closing and banning posters since patch went live (I was one of them) which bring to light the fact that hunter competitive PvP is dead with their current version of focus. Many ideas, suggestions and well written analysis have been posted and yet not one response from a developer.
The only viable spec to PvP is as BM and it consists of AS spam and then you die. They have not only taken the all the fun out of the class mechanics and PvP, but they literally scraped a working system which took them years to get to a satisfactory level and turned it into pain and frustration overnight. Worst, they seem reluctant to even address or acknowledge our concerns.
I for one shelved my 5 year old hunter and will be moving on with my DK or my lock which is what I hear GC plays.

Is this a joke thread ? Hunters have always been an easy pvp class. Just faceroll your ass off
wutsconflag Oct 28th 2010 5:15PM
"That means hunters will once again feel like PvP gods..."
Someone tell me when this happens. In the meantime, I'll PVP on something else.
:/

I recommend that shadow priest.
