WoW Moviewatch: Mafioso Swing
Mafioso Swing was the first place runner-up for the BlizzCon 2010 machinima contest. This video by Firebolt Productions is a musical introduction to the goblin race and the many entrepreneurial ways they'll be helping out the Horde. If I weren't already completely sold on how awesome goblins are going to be, this video would finish the job.
Mafioso Swing is beautiful, well written and even better performed. This is one video that's going into my rotational deck to check out periodically because I just can't get over how much fun it is. FireboltPro has really stepped up the bar with this video and it's more than worth the time to check it out.

IMO, not as good as I Am Forsaken. Entertaining, but the storytelling was a bit abrupt and disjointed for me in the early parts.

Agreed, I just really wasn't feeling it. I felt like the words were just all crammed into the music that they had and I couldn't easily follow the story.

This is just my take on the situation, and a lot of it is theoretical:
So far all the reviews I've seen around have been leaning towards I Am Forsaken. And, honestly, I'm biased to it myself--it's just so good ("I... Am... FORSAKEN." Chills). I continually question why Love Rocket won the contest. At this point I'm inclined to believe it was because: A) Gnomes needed some spotlight and/or B) The judges were Gnomes. Or perhaps the most likely reason, C) I Am Forsaken struck a very dark and evil chord that Blizzard probably didn't want to recognize with a gold star ("we condone the slaughtering of a lot of people over a silly love story with partial nudity of small lawn ornaments").

If you've seen my comments, you know that I fully back Love Rocket as the winner. Call me a gnomophile–I won't deny it. It had a great narrative and played out a clever well-told story.
That said, I Am Forsaken was definitely more serious subject matter, and told well. I think it definitely deserved the first place runner-up spot.

Great song, the only real thing i can complain about is the lack of good lip-sync.
Grovinofdarkhour Oct 28th 2010 12:38PM
I, on the other hand, frickin' loved this. My one complaint is that I thought the wrap-up was a little sudden and awkward. But really, I just want a sequel. Okay, several sequels.

It ended and I was thinking "Did my monitor turn off? Did my computer crash? What just happened?"
Given the topic, perhaps a Sopranos-style ending was appropriate, but it still caught me by surprise.

Honestly, I'd agree. Or an extended version. I think it just seemed like too much forced into the space allotted. With a bit more time for the narrative, it could've been much stronger.

As Josin had stated above I too did not really "enjoy" this movie. The effects were great and I loved the mafia tone but the music and the lyrics just didn't do anything for me. Even the 3rd place movie was more enjoyable.
Definitely felt that I Am Forsaken was better in terms of true depth/meaning, movie making potential, and "watchability."
WaterRouge Oct 28th 2010 12:49PM
Ohp. I guess I misunderstood Josin's first comment. First part of my initial comment should now read "Unlike Josin, I did not really "enjoy" this movie.

Its alright, man. I often confuse myself. (See the Queue, where I was having a hell of a time with backwards typing. Even in my reply to my reply, I messed up what I was trying to say.)
jfofla Oct 28th 2010 1:34PM
I have no idea why this was a winner. The story is almost impossible to follow.
Jenks Oct 28th 2010 2:55PM
Yet another entry better than the overall winner.
Daikaiju Oct 28th 2010 2:53PM
I'm wondering if this was a edited version to fit the contest rules. It feels like parts are missing.
Doz Oct 28th 2010 2:41PM
I have to say I'm a little disappointed with all the entries I've seen so far. "Don't Make Me Get My Main" from last year set the bar way too high for me.

^This...
The rules and/or or the judging standards must have been changed. I didn't find the "winners" good at all.
roseclown Oct 28th 2010 3:24PM
Eh, this was good. The effects were great, and the idea was fun. My problem is that it seemed so spastic, and there wasn't a lot of overall connection between verses.
It's like it was TRYING to tell a story, but kinda failed. :/
Jean_Luc_Picard Oct 28th 2010 5:08PM
What would Warchief Garrosh do? definitely needed at least a mention. All of these choices are depressing.
Giordano Oct 29th 2010 2:03PM
Haha, agreed. That song was better than this.
This movie was just too compressed, the singing wasn't in rhythm neither. Its even more disappointing when you realize Firebolt also made terrific songs in the past.
If Warcraft Garrosh was placed instead of this, I couldn't disagree with the chosen winners.
