Today is Halloween in the physical world and also the last day of
Hallow's End in Azeroth. There is just no escape from costumes and candy, no matter where you go. For me, that's a good thing. This is one of my favorite holidays, being No. 3 of the four major chocolate holidays of the year. And I love the in-game version as well, with its silly achievements and delicious XP and/or cash for alts.
While most U.S. children will be trick-or-treating this evening, the bulk of the Halloween parties have already happened. In game, most of the dailies and achievement attempts have already occurred as well, but you still have time to try for your goals until tonight.
Do you participate in Halloween? If so, what did you and/or your child go as this year? Do you participate in Hallow's End? How close are you to finishing your goals?

This year, I'm just going trick-or-treating with some of my friends. I won't actually wear a costume because I think I'm too old for one and I'll only wear it for an hour on one day of one year. In game, I just got the Hallowed Be Thy Name meta-achievement yesterday.

In game: Still no Horseman's Reins... I'm gonna use my last try with some guildies later, but so far, no luck 3 years running...
IRL: Going to the Seattle Sounders Vs LA Galaxy playoff game! Should be a blast. My kids and I are getting dressed up as different Sounders players.

I'm hoping more people will give out candy this year for my kids. Last few years we've had to drive through the neighborhood cherry-picking the few houses that are giving out candy because there are so few. Pathetic really how lame it is in comparison to traveling in a group up and down the street, but until people start handing out candy more again... well its what we've got. Come on people, not that hard to buy a bag of candy!
In WoW, I am convinced they increased the drop rate on the horseman reigns. I never even saw it drop the last couple of years it was soooo rare. This year - five of my 80 characters have it. I've also seen a bunch of other people open their bag and get it after the daily run. I didn't even -see- the object drop until this year.

lucky!! (for the reins ;) ) I've *seen* the mount drop for others who open their bags while still grouped.. just nothing of the sort in MY bag. But its ok, next year.
As for the trick or treating with your kids, good luck! I over-bought candy because I thought there would be more kids to give it to. I live in Harrisburg PA, where halloween is ruined (well.. not 'ruined' just different) and depending on what county you live in the trick or treat day is different. My county was this past thursday, when my apartment complex finally thought it was a good idea to do something for the kids. I still have a ton, but no one will be here tonight to take it off my hands.

I for one have better things to spend my money on than sweets for kids who turn up, expect hand outs and then go off to the next house. If it bothers you, buy them candy yourself and have a party *shrug*.
I agree that the reins drop rate must have been upped. On my server, it feels like every second person in Dalaran is on the HH mount, which I will admit makes me less bothered that I didn't get it.

"No. 3 of the four major chocolate holidays of the year"
I'm assuming the first two are Valentine's Day and Easter, but I'm absolutely drawing a blank as to what the fourth candy holiday would be.
Robin Torres Oct 31st 2010 1:10PM
Christmas! There are all sorts of special chocolate gift boxes or packaging that only come out for that holiday.
Though really, I make sure that every day is at least a chocolate mini-holiday.
alpha5099 Oct 31st 2010 1:13PM
Yeah, I suppose there's a fair amount of candy and sweets around Christmas. I guess I just don't see it as such a defining characteristic, like the other three holidays. If you're not Christian, there's literally nothing else to Easter other than the candy, and Halloween without candy is just wrong. I could imagine Christmas without candy.

I see Christmas fitting in with the candy holidays, although personally I always thought of it as the cookie holiday. :) I'm always baking cookies, all different kinds, to either have for home or take to work. My co-workers never need an excuse to have sweets, even though some are point-counters.. so I always try to bake something with splenda for them. My apple pies at thanksgiving have gone over great.

My kids and my husband and I each had a theme this year. The kids all went as characters from How To Train your Dragon: we had Hiccup, Astrid, two Toothless's and a Deadly NAdder. My husband and I did the comic LFG. Husband was Richard, and I was Benny. His costume was SO much fun to make. I just made a black and red dragon hood for the baby and we called him Baby Deathwing :). They did T or T ing yesterday here, as we are in the middle of the Bible Belt.

I heard that Hallows End was an RNG disaster from my guildies while leveling, but I had the title within 3 days, and the horse within 4. I still run the Horseman every day, for the cash, and I feel really bad about having to delete a pet or the helm that keeps dropping. I love vanity pets. Damn you, Blizzard, stop making me kill them!

Went to a party yesterday. I never miss out on celebrating Halloween if I can help it. I was attired in pirate gear - Yarrr!
I'll probably put it all on again tonight to hand out candy.
Yarr!

The apartment complex I live in finally decided to do something for the kids in the complex (they aren't allowed to trick or treat because the building doors are electronically locked and they don't want people bothered by having to buzz kids in if most of the building isn't giving anything).. So I put on a wizard costume I've had in my closet from when I dressed up for work a couple years ago.. gave out some candy - still had tons left because there weren't as many kids there as I thought.
As for Hallows End - I did get the title. Although I thought I'd never get the helm to drop. I got the squashling pet on the first day - after being denied all of last year. I finished up all of the achievements I had control over (throwing pumpkins, wands, rotten hallow) and I waited till like 2 days ago for a helm to drop. I really thought I'd have to wait till next year because I saw it as a bad sign that my level 16 priest on her first trick or treat got the helm.. and an even WORSE sign that as I was leveling her, a few days later, she got the squashling. She's got the hardest achievement (and a couple others, and good starts on the ones where you need other people) and is only level 30.. so hopefully next year I'll have her at 80 and she'll get the title too since she's got a head start.
As for the reins, I have come up empty. I did get the sword, which I can't use yet I refuse to destroy. I've downed him every day since he's been available, but no luck. Actually, I don't really mind since it was the horseman that FINALLY gave me a helm since the inkeeps were not being nice to me at all (candy corns, toothpicks.. squashlings..).
Up to, and including today, I have gotten 7 pets - 1 sits in my bank and 5 have been destroyed. I've destroyed about 10 stacks of toothpicks. But the saddest part - the WORST part - I know someone who had to destroy reins. She got the mount day 1 this year, and got another one a couple days later. That hurts.

We had dinosaurs -- a 3yo who trick-or-treated and a 7mo who got carried around and served as the reason for extra candy ("and another one for my brother"). Quite the racket. We visited the 11 houses on our block and he came away with a respectable haul for 3 years old.
For Hallow's End, I got the title this year and couldn't be bothered to try for mounts and justice points this year.

Trick or Treating with my two year old this evening. It was snowing, hard... should have worn a santa costume.
In game: HH Reins dropped for my DK, 3 freaking times. For my Pally twice (though he's had it since two years ago) and never for my Druid or Warlock.
Oddly enough, did not see the plate helm once, did get the sword on a few occassions.
Jeremy Oct 31st 2010 11:59PM
Got the mount twice, sadly not on the 2 toons that I wanted though.
Did finally finish the entire event on my main (Ele Shammy) and therefore the meta "What a Long Strange Trip Its Been"... so even though he didn't get the reins, he does have a shiny new violet proto drake AND 310% flight speed for free, so I really can't complain. He even finished the big mask achievement and managed to loot all the masks this year after working on it for the last 2 years.
All in all, not a bad haul this year. :D

I was kind of a jerk when I was a kid & used to tell people I was an "Undercover cop" so I could just dress in normal clothes & wear a fake badge around my neck.
Now I'm way too old to go trick or treating but don't yet have any of my own little ones to take around so I usually dress the dogs up & go to my parents house & help them pass out candy. If that counts my Foxhound was a princess & my Coonhound was a Warrior.

I have one level 80 with 'The Hallowed' title and I CBA trying to get it on the other 5. I did try and get the mount on them all... and yesterday, I even busted my butt trying to get my druid to level 78 so he could do a run as well. Only to be 7 minutes late :(
I blame it on the kids coming around trick or treating that disturbed my flow... not the getting up and going down the street to get a chinese dinner or stopping for 2 hours to do housework :(
Oh well, he will be level 80 by this weekend so that doesnt matter.
Comito Nov 1st 2010 9:42AM
Wasn't online on the last night, but I got my Violet proto drake, but no luck on the HH mount....better luck next time if I'm still playing the char :)
