1:30 p.m. EDT We're getting several reports in that elementals and cultists are attacking Azeroth.
1:37 p.m. EDT It looks like there are rifts that open in various zones in Azeroth, and elementals spawn. You can kill the elementals as they spawn.
1:40 p.m. EDT There are quest people you can talk to in Orgrimmar and Stormwind, outside of the banks.
1:49 p.m. EDT You can access a Mysterious Device after you kill a spawn of elementals in any zone.
1:59 p.m. EDT There's an uptick in the number of earth quakes.
2:07 p.m. EDT We're getting reports that this event is now active in the EU as well and the US/NA servers.
2:29 p.m. EDT Tons of quest info in screenshot form after the break.
2:55 p.m. EDT All of the Alliance quests are documented after the break; the Horde quests are very similar.
5:50 p.m. EDT At some point, perhaps not in this phase of the invasion, the elementals will begin spawning in the cities. If you kill them in the city from their big spawn point, then you get a daily quest object/item that lets you go through a portal and kill one of the two new daily bosses for this event: Prince Sarsarun or Kai'ju Gahz'rilla.
That's all we have right now; however, please be aware that we'll update this post with any additional clarifying information we get in.

The events were not crammed together on the PTR. It was about a week apart for the elemental invasions to start, then the elemental attacks on the cities to start.

Where are the "big spawn points?"

The OP was wrong. The random world spawns drop a repeatable quest object when you kill about 10 of the spawns, nothing from the city spawns.
The city invasion points (not in game at this time) appear after you have done the first stage of the city invasion event and must be cleared to make the portals to the event bosses: air/water in SW and earth/fire in IF (Alliance ofc). There are map indicators and other UI information to tell you were they are in the cities.
After the elementals are removed from the city the portals will stay up for about 30 minutes and allow you to queue for the bosses but LFD works just fine without bothering with them. The bosses will appear in LFD while the portals are active.

Will we get the Feat of Strength (Tripping the Rifts), if we wait for the elementals to come into the cities or only if we've managed to get to the rifts - around the continents - beforehand?

Anyone else notice that on the Horde side that the final leg of the quest refers to Garrosh as the warchief and that he now gives the low level quest (sub 15 I think) that Thrall use to give?

Garrosh has been handing out those quests ever since the patch. It's not new.

if you spend 10 minutes standing around Thrall, you'll see the dialog as Thrall hands off power to Garrosh. Unless of course that is gone now.

Confirmed you can get the achievement from killing the rifts in any zone.... my hubby got one in UnGoro, 2 in Outlands (HF & Nag) and his last in SB. The quest, however, was only on the SB crystal that was left after the WInd elementals were down, bringing to mind that the quest is available only in you level range.

If you're not after the daily quest, I highly suggest Outland for your rift sealing in order to avoid the clusterfuck in Northrend. Low level ones still count for Tripping the Rift, and on my server at least the Outland ones damn near uncontested. I would have gotten all 4 in one spawn period had I not accidentally clicked the wrong FP.

That sounds like a good idea. Until I get the achievement, the dailies aren't so important. I'd like to scrub the achievement, then worry about those other rifts. Which rifts, in Outland, did you use?
