Recently as of 4.0.1 they seem to have added a bit of tidy plates functionality into the default nameplates, but prior to this patch -- tidy plates was included in -the- standard for tanking add ons. Largely because tidy-plates took nameplates, and omen and added them together -- as you start to lose aggro on a particular mob, the name plate will grow bigger, and change color so it's easy to spot which one you're losing aggro on and grab it back quickly. Omen tends to only work on whatever mob you have targeted, tidy plates would work on every target you had targeted. DPS found it helpful as i was a visual cue to switch targets if they were getting it too mad at them, and healers would use it to realize if they needed to pop fade, etc. While I agree with you, it's ugly -- nothing has been able to beat it's functionality, not even the improved name plates/changes in 4.0.1
