Scattered Shots: Hunter spell alerts guide
Every Monday and Thursday, WoW Insider brings you Scattered Shots for beast mastery, marksmanship and survival hunters. Each week, Frostheim of Warcraft Hunters Union uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to Frostheim.
Among the host of new things patch 4.0.1 brought us hunters -- including new talents and rotations, new pet abilities and lower DPS -- was built-in spell alerts. Power Auras became such an integral part of so many people's gameplay that Blizzard finally gave us its own non-customizable version to warn us when proc-type abilities become ready.
Interestingly, this helpful addition has a lot of hunters confused. I've been getting a steady stream of emails and comments asking what certain icons mean or why they appear when they do (such as when an ability isn't ready). It seems a spell alert guide is in order.
Join me after the cut for a list of all the hunter spell alerts, what they're for and why they appear when they do. If you're totally familiar with all of them, then I have included the epic hunter video above for your day's entertainment.
Spell alert features
Spell alerts usually do four things when they trigger:
- You hear some kind of sound effect, letting you know that something is going on.
- Green text appears, letting you know what the alert is for. The text appears at your feet, floats up toward your head, then quickly fades away.
- An icon of some sort appears around your character. This remains until the spell alert goes away (either because you've done what it was notifying you about, or you waited too long and missed your chance).
- The button on our action bars associated with the spell alert lights up and remains lit up until you use or lose the ability the alert is notifying you about.
Focus Fire -- beast mastery
The Focus Fire spell alert triggers as soon as your pet has five stacks of Frenzy and the Focus Fire ability is off cooldown. The spell alert displays the text "Focus Fire!" as well as the icon, and it lights up the Focus Fire button on your UI. The text quickly fades, but the icon and lit-up button remain until you hit it.

Killing Streak -- beast mastery
Killing Streak is triggered when your pet gets two Kill Command crits in a row. You see the "Killing Streak" text as well as the icon, and the Kill Command button on your UI lights up.

This is another very useful spell alert, but it's also a bit annoying because when the Kill Command button is lit up on your UI it can be very difficult to actually see how much of the cooldown is left. Fortunately, BM hunters know to use Kill Command every fourth button press anyway, so hitting it at the right time shouldn't be difficult.
Improved Steady Shot -- marksmanship
The Improved Steady Shot spell alert is just letting you know that you got the Improved Steady Shot 15 percent haste buff.

Master Marksman -- marskmanship
The Fire! alert indicates that your Master Marksman talent has reached five stacks and has now triggered a free Aimed Shot. In addition to the icon and "Fire!" text, your Aimed Shot button will light up.

Resistance is Futile -- marksmanship
Interestingly, this spell alert seems to be the only one that doesn't include a text alert to let you know what's proccing; however, your Kill Command button will light up.

Lock and Load -- survival
The Lock and Load spell alert is letting you know that your Lock and Load has procced and you can now get your two free, non-cooldown Explosive Shots or Arcane Shots. In addition to the text and icon, both your Explosive Shot and Arcane Shot buttons will light up.

Kill Shot -- all specs
The only hunter spell alert without an icon, the Kill Shot alert is letting you know that your opponent is now at or below 20 percent health and ready for you to unload some nice, focus-free Kill Shots in his general direction. The alert is only warning you about where your enemy's health is -- it is possible to have the alert while Kill Shot is on cooldown.

Man, I wish I'd made a hunter and joined up with them when it first got going. That's awesome and most importantly, looks like they're having fun.

This is a great article, I don't play a hunter but I highly encourage WoW Insider to have one of these articles for each class. I still can't figure out why I have tons of spell alerts on my mage and none on my Shaman. I have even noticed that my Lava Burst cooldown will reset itself more frequently since the patch than previously and you would think there would be a spell alert for this but there isn't and I really wish there was. Sorry for hijacking your hunter thread, again great article.

in case anyone asks yes I've double checked and the setting is turned on for the Shaman, I believe it defaults to on actually. I did turn down the opacity on my mage as the Brain Freeze alert was so large it was blocking my screen and making it hard for me to switch targets but I have the opacity on high for the Shaman and no change.

just an FYI your Lava Burst is resetting quickly because of one of the new talents, called Lava Surge. There is no graphic for it, I think, but it does come up as Lava Surge in the default combat text, hope that helps.

My hunter and druid both have the great proc graphics, but my baby priest keeps getting shadow orbs and a shadow copy (right at the end of a fight) with no procs - My mindblast has lit-up like mangle on my bear - but no fancy graphics.

You could grab the PowerAuras addon and make your own cooldown proc graphic. :)
Power Auras -has- been updated for 4.0 and all of my previous settings were even kept.
You can make things specific to your character, like the lava burst and also for all your characters, My public profile now includes low health and mana indicators for me, they come in handy if you start to tunnel vision and forget to check your health bar. ;)

Thank you Frostheim, that article was definitely needed. It's good to finally know what these things want to tell me, because I couldn't trace any connection between auras appearing and my combat log at all...
Ilem Nov 4th 2010 2:15PM
Also, I guess I'll need to play around with my combat text settings--I got rid of scrolling battle text add-ons as 4.0.1 came out and my add-on of choice wasn't updated yet, but I still can't see the green text as an aura pops up. I usually hate when Blizzard changes some interface setting that I need to fix up again, but in this case, I wish there'd be a standard setting the WoW client returned to during the upgrade to 4.0.1 so I'd see the text...

Thank you, thank you for doing this! I hope all class columns follow suit. Why didn't Blizzard document this stuff somewhere? Most of the time when I'm playing I'll suddenly see one of these auras pop up and my thought process goes something like this: "Huh. Something just procced. I wonder what the hell it could be." (quickly check 15+ buffs) "No, not there." (look for highlighted spell on bar) "No, not there either. Ah well, it's gone now."

There's a lot of frustrating aspects to hunters right now -- I'm the only one still raiding in my heroic ICC crew -- but Glyph of Kill Shot has got to be the best glyph ever. I so love giving that double-tap every six seconds to raid bosses.
nh4416 Nov 4th 2010 2:57PM
I'll take my old 15-40k+ kill shots over your "double tap" any day.
This isn't even our most damaging shot anymore. It's really taken excitment out of using kill shot. Just another shot now.
They need to change the name to "free shot" because the name kill shot really misrepresents what this shot does anymore.
perderedeus Nov 4th 2010 2:21PM
I love that Focus Fire aura. I wish it were part of Power Auras as well, but it seems the add-on author didn't incorporate this one.
furry Nov 4th 2010 2:29PM
So... what's the point of the Killing Streak alert? How does knowing that Kill Command will do more damage change what I'm doing as a BM hunter - I'm going to be hitting it anyway.
perderedeus Nov 4th 2010 2:35PM
I wondered that myself. When setting up my own auras I thought "oh, don't forget Killing Streak" and then immediately "... as if I wouldn't be hitting KC when it's off cooldown anyway?"
Star Gryphon Nov 4th 2010 3:09PM
Killing Streak alert may be redundant in a PvE environment where you have a set rotation available, but it is helpful in a PvP environment where thing change be chaotic.
sherekhan88 Nov 4th 2010 3:21PM
Sometimes I time it to get it up before I hit my first Bestial Wrath, along with a full Frenzy stack.
