Blizzard clarifies combat resurrections for Cataclysm

- These limitations affect raid content only.
- One combat resurrection is allowed per boss attempt in 10-man raids (Rebirth or Soulstone).
- Three combat resurrections are allowed per boss attempt in 25-man raids (any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone).
- Accepting a combat resurrection is what counts towards the total accrued, not the cast.
- Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown.
- Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown.

The design for combat resurrection effects has changed a good deal for Cataclysm, and we want to make sure players are clear on how spells like Rebirth and Create Soulstone now function. Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown and Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown. On raid boss encounters, you can only use one of these combat resurrection spells (so one Rebirth or one Soulstone) per attempt for 10-player raids. For 25-player raids you can use three forms of combat resurrection per raid boss attempt (so three of any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone). The count is incremented as soon as a player accepts a resurrection, so one can always choose not to accept if he or she wants someone else to get the resurrection instead. There is no equivalent of the Sated debuff (which tracks Bloodlust/Heroism usage), but you will get an error message if you try to resurrect too many players, and we might add tracking to our raid interface if there is demand for it. Outside of raid content, you can use as many battle resurrections as you have available.
For those of you currently participating in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta test, please note that this functionality may not be fully implemented as of yet. If you notice combat resurrections are not currently functioning as explained here, this is just a heads-up about the updated design intent behind them.

Unless Soulstone is being changed, why does the harder to use combat rez (that being Soulstone, since you have to predict ahead of time who to Soulstone) have the longer cooldown?

One thing we're considering with Soulstone is making it possible, in addition to its current functionality, to be cast on a dead player to give them the option of joining the living again.

Any word on whether this also applies to ankh, Zarhym? Or is it just rebirth and soulstone?

I'll... get back to you on that.

Stop that man, he's running off with our ankhs!

At least the Warlock undeath will still work in leveling.
Our defenses have always been "release spirit" and "use soulstone" if the brown hits the fan.

Well, this is not a particularly exciting change, especially if it affect Shaman Reincarnation. There's going to be situations where a Shaman could save themselves (and contribute to the raid) and not be able to, because the leader wants "more important" members given priority should they die. Obviously it's already like that for Rebirth, but moving it to a self-cast would be very frustrating.
Corath Nov 5th 2010 1:21PM
Poor Enhancement Shaman - not able to use their best method of an aggro dump. Pull aggro, die, and reincarnate.
(cutaia) Nov 5th 2010 1:27PM
I would be really, seriously surprised if they count reincarnate towards this. It's closer to all the other "cheat death" mechanics than it is to a battle rez or soulstone. At least I hope I'm right about that.
Also...expecting a Cataclysm mod for raid leaders called, "WHO ****ING BREZZED?" in 3, 2, 1...
kymali Nov 5th 2010 1:55PM
@Cutaia it already exists it's called Recount or in our raid the tell in raid announcing you rezzed someone so they can be rebuffed/healed/ yelled at for going AFK and not accepting :)
Firestyle Nov 5th 2010 2:43PM
Very good point. Reincarnate is very much like a cheat death. If one counts, I presume the other should.
Counting this would effectively be a nerf to reincarnation for anything but a resto shaman. Given the limitation placed here, I suspect combat res's are going to be on reserve for healers/tanks and there will be very very mad raid leaders if dps shaman are ressurrecting without pre-approval.
Duk4o Nov 5th 2010 2:58PM
Actually I think it should affect reincarnation if Blizz stays true to the "bring the player not the class" philosophy. Otherwise shammys will be preffered cause if a healer/dps dies and they're a shammy the combat rezz won't be wasted on them.
Just my 2 cents :)
xiani Nov 5th 2010 3:03PM
It's a very expensive 'cheat death'...you get a repair bill after a reincarnation you know, I have never used it deliberately. Well, maybe one or two times at low levels as a short-cut down a cliff...
squig_masta Nov 5th 2010 7:20PM
If Reincarnation counts, then so should Ardent Defender and, of course, Cheat Death. Just beceause they're an automatic self rez doesn't make them any less of a rez.
Dranchor Nov 5th 2010 1:09PM
Nice that they are leveling the field in this particular area, too. Since no class was supposed to have unique perks, this is a good change in my opinion.
Mephestos Nov 5th 2010 1:28PM
Re-read your last sentence. Does that really sound like a good idea to you?
Martin Nov 5th 2010 2:23PM
Are you serious? The only reason any of us choose one class over another is unique perks.
Durinthal Nov 5th 2010 3:29PM
5.0 patch notes: "All existing classes have been removed from the game and replaced with a new one, called Class. It has three specializations: DPS, Tanking, and Healing."
SgtBaker Nov 5th 2010 3:43PM
All bosses have been replaced by placeholders, you defeat them by trying not to stand in wrong place. The wrong place changes at random. Also, we removed gear. The placeholders will now drop points which you collect. You upgrade points by adding new points to your existing points.
Have !
Huga Nov 5th 2010 4:15PM
Maybe having just one class is a bit too simple. I think Blizzard would be happy with just 4 classes - one for each role.
As it stands now, druids are just nerfed priests.
Colleen Nov 5th 2010 1:10PM
I think this is a good change. Less about who's rebirth or soulstone is up, and more about knowing exactly how many times you can do it per fight. I think for raid leaders this will be a great change.
woshiernog Nov 5th 2010 3:42PM
But where's the lore behind the change?
Andrew Timson Nov 8th 2010 10:52PM
The lore is the same place as the lore for the druids' sudden inability to stay in treeform: there ain't any, and there ain't gonna be any, because there's no way for it to make sense from a lore perspective. It's pure gameplay mechanics.
Stryky Nov 5th 2010 1:11PM
Not too bothered by these changes, i can imagine alot of peeps are though.
Don't suppose they could make reincarnation only usable during a raid when theres no raid boss being fought?
Like an out of combat res only. I wouldent like to see it go away or share a cooldown in raids fights with SS and Rebirth
