Blizzard clarifies combat resurrections for Cataclysm

- These limitations affect raid content only.
- One combat resurrection is allowed per boss attempt in 10-man raids (Rebirth or Soulstone).
- Three combat resurrections are allowed per boss attempt in 25-man raids (any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone).
- Accepting a combat resurrection is what counts towards the total accrued, not the cast.
- Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown.
- Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown.

The design for combat resurrection effects has changed a good deal for Cataclysm, and we want to make sure players are clear on how spells like Rebirth and Create Soulstone now function. Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown and Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown. On raid boss encounters, you can only use one of these combat resurrection spells (so one Rebirth or one Soulstone) per attempt for 10-player raids. For 25-player raids you can use three forms of combat resurrection per raid boss attempt (so three of any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone). The count is incremented as soon as a player accepts a resurrection, so one can always choose not to accept if he or she wants someone else to get the resurrection instead. There is no equivalent of the Sated debuff (which tracks Bloodlust/Heroism usage), but you will get an error message if you try to resurrect too many players, and we might add tracking to our raid interface if there is demand for it. Outside of raid content, you can use as many battle resurrections as you have available.
For those of you currently participating in the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta test, please note that this functionality may not be fully implemented as of yet. If you notice combat resurrections are not currently functioning as explained here, this is just a heads-up about the updated design intent behind them.

Unless Soulstone is being changed, why does the harder to use combat rez (that being Soulstone, since you have to predict ahead of time who to Soulstone) have the longer cooldown?

One thing we're considering with Soulstone is making it possible, in addition to its current functionality, to be cast on a dead player to give them the option of joining the living again.

Any word on whether this also applies to ankh, Zarhym? Or is it just rebirth and soulstone?

I'll... get back to you on that.

Saurfang doesn't let you use a battle rez due to the Mark of the Fallen Champion debuff persisting through death, but on Heroic Putricide the Unbound Plague is removed by a player's death. This can easily be exploited using battle rez. Instead of all the trouble and dps loss of passing the plague around you just let the person who got the Unbound Plague die and then rez them. If the initial person who got the plague can not easily recover their mana (ie healer) then just get them to pass it to a person who can recover their energy resource easily and let that person die. The encounter can be made easier with this method as long as a team had enough battle rezes available!
I don't blame blizzard for wanting to know the maximum amount of rezes available per encounter. Sure, most guild wouldn't force bringing classes to get more brez chances but I'm sure some of the top guilds would so that they could get that server first!

So, it is one/three rezzes 'per attempt' right?
So let's be honest. If you need more than three battle rez's on each attempt in 25man you are doing something wrong.
Cyrus Nov 5th 2010 1:48PM
"If you need more than three battle rez's on each attempt in 25man you are doing something wrong."
Yes, of course. Lots of people do lots of things wrong when learning new content. What's your point?
And three battle rezzes on 25-man don't seem to me like as bad a restriction as only one on 10-man. Three takes organization and/or quick thinking that's rare anyway. (Unless you're stacking druids and locks, and, again, who does that?) Only one per 10-man, though, looks like a pretty strict rule.
Jerry Nov 5th 2010 1:51PM
True. And one on 10 man is stretching it because I can tell you on fights like Sindragosa Heroic more than one is preferable.
But, isn't this already in live to a point? At least it was the week of the 4.0 patch. We ran into a snag where we couldn't b-rez someone for 30 minutes after doing it. So this is actually an improvement. Unless that was just a bug that has gotten hotfixed since.

yes things do go wrong in progression

I really hope the change to SS's goes through (casting on a dead player). I often forget to put a stone on someone until . . . Ya know, they're dead.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a good change. A B-Rez is supposed to be for big problems like a tank going down because a Healer D/Ced or someone fat-fingering Taunt and getting half the raid cleaved. It's not for the Mage who wasn't watching his threat or the DK standing in fire.
Admittedly, I'll miss being able to chain Rez Druids and pull off what would have normally been a wipe, but I think I can count on one hand how many times that's actually happened.
Aaron Nov 5th 2010 1:57PM
Same here. I'll put one on a healer with every intention of keeping up with the CD and making sure they are stoned, but it quickly slips my mind with all the other things I have going on. Heck, last week just goofing off doing Black Temple we had about 23 or so players, I SS'd a healer and during one fight they died and I told them to use the SS, they said they had already used it. Unless someone lets me know it's kinda difficult to keep up with.
Dear Blizz, change is good. =D

I think the value of Glyph of Rebirth just jumped exponentially.
Xtofer Nov 5th 2010 1:38PM
I know they're saying it hasn't been implemented yet, but it seems to me the changes are already live. Anyone else notice they're already getting the rebirth "you've exhausted your combat res..." error? I also could have sworn that because soulstone was cast on me last night during a heroic LK attempt that I couldn't cast rebirth.
Lloren Nov 5th 2010 1:53PM
Our raid had a similar problem. One of our Druids had a brez available but when he tried to cast it, nothing happened. And we had already used several before he tried.... Next attempt, it was working again.
Sterrin Nov 5th 2010 1:38PM
At least they finally clarified the changes. Let's just say my guild has an...overabundance of druids, and last week on LK10 it seemed like the B rez would just work whenever it wanted to, with no rhyme or reason. Last night we were on LK10 with our usual complement of four druids (one bear tank, one kitty, one tree-disguised-as-a-cow, and o hai I'm a boomchikin) and we were able to get off one b rez on two subsequent attempts, once from our kickass tree and once from our humble boomkin.
SaintStryfe Nov 5th 2010 1:40PM
They better not make Reincarnation part of this stupidity. It's a core class ability to self-rez. If they do this, they better let only one aggro drop per raid encounter (only one time Hunters).
This demands DPS be perfect, because brez will never be used on a DPS rather then saved for a heal or tank.
Hiwa Nov 5th 2010 1:58PM
I always laugh at dps who ask for b resses anyway, so meh, no biggie to me.
Aaron Nov 5th 2010 2:02PM
It will all depend on how close you are to that enrage timer, how strong the DPS that needs a rez really is etc etc. You are correct that it will come down to priorities though. It's going to be very interesting.
Lloren Nov 5th 2010 1:44PM
Honestly, I prefer this over what we have in live. 30 min CD on a SS that lasts 15 mins and straight 30 min CD on rebirth. This at least means that some form of battle Rez should be available on every attempt. I don't think battle Rez should or ever was intended to be part of a strategy in defeating an encounter. It is and should be something that can help prevent a wipe if bad RNG takes out a tank or a healer. I think this system preserves that while removing some of the battle Rez abuse. "Rez Druid a so they can Rez Druid b so they can Rez fail warlock c so they can soulstone Druid d in case they die so we have another Rez available. Oh... And shammy e ankh!!!" ....didn't we basically wipe?
Brett Porter Nov 5th 2010 2:17PM
I'm guessing the issue with SS having the weird cooldowns on live is an accident or bug. I talked to an ingame GM about it and they said if it isn't in the notes it isn't intentional. Of course they have implemented things without telling us before.
I'm not complaining about it, but it would be nice to have one straightforward answer on how SS is supposed to work (outside of raids) on live right now. As it is I've gotten different answers depending on which GM I've talked to.
/sigh
Huga Nov 5th 2010 4:24PM
I would be very happy with aggro-dropping abilities be completely removed from game or limited to "1 per attempt". Why should classes without these abilities be penalized!
Disposed Nov 5th 2010 2:04PM
Not sure how i feel about this on my druid. No more treeform, limited brez the big nerf to lifebloom earlier in the expansion, the way tanks are taking damage now etc. i just have no desire to heal on my druid anymore.
I used to enjoy running around in circles throwing out hots like a madman but now i feel more like my holy pally.
they say in cata it will get better but if it dont im done healing as a druid.
Candina@WH Nov 5th 2010 2:04PM
Change Reincarnation, Soulstone and Rebirth (change from cast to buff) to something like - any attack that would kill you returns you to 30% health with a 30/60 minute cooldown.
Puts is more in line with the 'cheat death' type abilities
Drakkenfyre Nov 5th 2010 6:23PM
And you completely eliminate the choice those abilities give you.
Don't want to resurrect as a Shaman? Died to something stupid? Don't use Resurrect. Died to something stupid as a Warlock? Don't use Soulstone.
With that change to a buff, it wastes them when you could save them for later.
