Conquer Azeroth in Civilization 5
Civilization Fanatics forum-goer Maze has designed a map pack for the recently released Civilization 5 that looks very familiar, and for good reason: the map mimics that of classic World of Warcraft, with the two main continents and the Maelstrom in the center.
The map is actually very accurate, with precisely placed bodies of water and coastlines and small details like purple creep in Silithus. There are also details like Thoradin's Wall and the Deeprun Tram pointed out.
Maze has created two versions of the map, with differing sizes for faster- or slower-paced games. Even if you aren't a fan of the game and don't plan on playing it, the graphics and attention to detail are pretty awesome. Check out some shots of the map in our gallery below.

Here seems to be a weird place to get into a discussion on the myriad failings on Civ5 but I'd have to say that Civ4 is still a lot better.
The removal of unit stacking is a nice twist in my mind and works well but everything else is either bugged or horribly dumbed down.
It's as if they pulled out all the interesting and complicated bits just to add them back in later with DLC.
Hmm....

Shouldn't it be Stonetalon Mountains, not Stonetalon Peak?

Are there race/faction mods too?
I would love to conquer Azeroth as Forsaken in Sylvanas's name.

I was thinking the same thing.

Would definitely need factions included with the AI set up so that Taurens/Orcs/Trolls would never break their alliance with each other. Blood Elves would be a bit flaky. Undead would be completely unpredictable. They would start off in the Horde but will turn on their allies as soon as they're powerful enough.
Night Elves would never turn on their allies but could, unpredictably, decide to become neutral and drop out of the game. The rest of the alliance would stick together, though humans should occasionally have cities rebel to start neutral or hostile sub-factions.
And have to include the wild card factions. Wildhammers would swing from neutral to Alliance and back again. Dark Irons would be in the game as a faction usually hostile to everyone but occasionally allying with Ironforge if they were in trouble. Grimtotems would be the same, except their occasional alliance would be with Thunder Bluff. Sithilids would also be a hostile to all faction.
Since Civ 5 now supports neutral city states, which have no desire for empire, Steamwheedle Cartel could be included.
Roving barbarian units and barbarian cities would be replaced with orcs, scourge, or the Scarlets depending on the location in the eastern kingdoms. Bloodsail pirates would plague the coasts there. Quillboar would work for much of Kalimdor, though not all.
Obviously, I want Blizzard to put out a grand strategic wargame set in classic Azeroth. A mix of Diplomacy and Axis & Allies would be perfect.

I originally read about this map on.. erm.. another video game news site. (I still love you, WoW Insider! You're my #1 source for all WoW news!) In that article, they addressed the obvious question of race mods, explaining that it's simply too soon. Civ V has not been out that long. A well-done mod to incorporate races, units, etc, is going to take much longer.
However, as incredible as this map pack looks, it will be a tremendous shame if someone doesn't do a total conversion. In the meantime, we'll have to be content with playing all human "factions."
If you're out there reading this, great work, Maze!

Now I have to worry about starting a game and stumbling on to Montezuma's forces in the Barrens.

Wow, this looks really beautiful .
A tribute to the old world before Blizzard starts making holes in it!
