Actually the original philosophy was more, "We'll just throw all this stuff at players and they'll figure out through trial and error that half of it doesn't work."
To wit: Arcane, Assassination, Discipline, Feral, Balance, Retribution, Protection (paladin), Enhancement, Elemental, Beast Mastery.
For all the complaints about the current dev team, at least they appear to give a crap about viability for all specs, more so in Cataclysm.

As someone who once attempted to play an arcane mage in vanilla, and had the joy of *talenting* Arcane Explosion down to an instantaneous spell, all I can say is "THIS."

One of the reasons there were so many Affliction locks in Vanilla & BC is because you had to spend 5 points in improved corruption to make it instant.
The old game was kinda weird...
