Guest Post: Azshara revamp ushers in new level range, epic stories

I would hazard a guess that a vast majority of WoW players have never even been to Azshara. Honestly, since Molten Core is no longer a major raid zone and the Runes of Fire Lords just put themselves out, there really isn't much reason to. Those of us who raided in vanilla made weekly trips there to pick up our Aqual Quintessence, and I was also an herbalist, so I would spend another hour or so out there looking for Dreamfoil because of needing a bag full of mana pots to raid in those pre-potion sickness days.
Clearly, the zone was unfinished. There was one quest hub, if you could call it that, because there were only a very small number of quests there. Blizzard tried to bring people to the unused zone later on by adding in the level 50 class quests that led up to Sunken Temple -- but really, in the process of leveling, you could basically ignore Azshara and move on.
I hated the original Azshara because it was out in the middle of nowhere and fairly poorly designed. It was hard to get to places because of all the rocky cliffs, and passages up and down from the beach to the cliffs were too few and far between. It could even be dangerous at level 60 before The Burning Crusade's stamina inflation; lots of mobs feared and or put debuffs on you, and there were elites wandering around over huge portions of the zone.
Sadly the few fond memories I have of old Azshara are gone, as well. When Azuregos was up in vanilla, the entire zone would become a raiding guild, PvP fight zone as the top Horde and Alliance raiding guilds fought over who could tag him, killing flagged members of the group who got him, hoping to wipe them and inflict them all with the debuff. It could get fun and entertaining -- and one time, it even caused our server to be shut down.
Well, that has all changed come Cataclysm.
A whole new level for Azshara
Azshara is now a low-level zone for Horde characters, run by the goblins. A complete decimation of the zone's natural resources is in effect: strip mining, massive lumber harvesting, and there is a giant race track running through a good portion of the zone, making it look as if the goblins did their best to redevelop their lost home island of Kezan.
The map of the zone now looks pretty much like a sideways version of the Horde symbol. As soon as you zone out of the rear exit of Orgrimmar, you see the goblin work in effect. In moments of zoning out of Orgrimmar, quests find you hijacking a shredder, cutting down trees, killing night elves and even an Ancient. You help in the giant quarry that replaces the Azshara crater, killing basilisks and refleshifying (I believe that is the actual term used in the quest) miners who were turned to stone.

A truly epic quest chain
As your low-level Horde character or high-level completionist character (talking to those Loremasters out there), you will kill numerous Alliance-based NPCs, mostly night elves but some gnomes too -- yay for punting! Many of the mob types originally in Azshara are still there, but their levels have been adjusted to fit the new zone. The giants wandering the hills are now level 20ish elites; there are chimera around level 18 to 20. Also there are still naga, and they are not happy about the new goblin incursion.
As you move through the zone, one of the most amazing changes is the effect of a post-Wrath storyline on the new Azshara. There is no "Lore ... LOL!" being done here; this is a true continuation of the actual storyline of World of Warcraft. Malygos is dead; the blue dragonflight is in shambles; Deathwing wishes to wipe the remaining blue dragonflight out completely. However, Kalecgos and Azuregos want to save them, and with your help, they work to fight off an invasion by the black dragonflight.
This quest chain is epic -- so epic that I do not want to ruin it with spoilers. If you play Alliance, make a goblin just to play through their starting area and Azshara; if you play Horde, make an alt or play through the quests on your main. The redesign of Azshara has made the most underused, empty, incomplete zone in World of Warcraft become a place you really do not want to miss. The blue posts saying they "brought the epic" and a complete experience to Azshara are not lying. It is a brand new zone. It is worth your time; you absolutely do not want to skip Azshara.

@Angus
Right there with you on Cairne. But as someone already said; Magni. Ironforge is and will always be my capital city, no matter what race I play. I run to defend Magni if word gets out of a Horde raid. I can't say as much for any other Alliance city or leader.
Two tragic losses of leaders just trying to do the right thing.

I was an hero.

Somewhere I find it quite sad Azshara is changing the way it is.
I always found it a very beautiful zone though useless for questing and horrible to navigate it is very pretty.
I didn't get into beta, but knowing goblins its most likely a smoldering pit with explosives now...
I really will miss old Azshara, the looks of the zone that is.

I agree completely. Even if it didn't have those few positive qualities, no matter how lame something is, if you "spend time with it", you grow attached.
I enjoyed traveling to Azshara for the mage quests, especially the pig one. I actually enjoyed farming its coasts for what felt like hours for some monster that might drop a clam that might contain a pearl to create a rod so I could continue leveling enchanting.
It was a bad zone, but I have memories there. All in all, I'm ready to let it go.

I just hope the Blizzard diddn't ruin the "Best" class Q in the entire game
Druid Swift Flightform Q (yes the spell is purchasable now but the Q is so fun and should be done anyways by all druids).

The editors probably catchy hundreds of tiny spelling errors every day, and you just HAVE to point out this one? Seriously.
Saeadame Nov 13th 2010 6:52PM
Okay, yes people, there are some minor spelling and grammatical errors in this particular post. Do you really, really need to point them out?
Good article! I have recently spent a little more time in Azshara, and it's quite a pretty zone. I'm not sure if I'll like it being taken over by goblin-ness.

I must be the only one who is going to miss the old Azshara. Sure, it was out of the way (mainly for Alliance; only takes a quick flight from Orgrimmar as Horde), but the way it seemed to be in constant autumn, its ghosts and War of the Ancients references, its ruins; it was just a really good zone.
Eddy Nov 13th 2010 7:07PM
You surely won't be the only one. It was one of my favorite zones to wander alone.
Kylenne Nov 13th 2010 7:27PM
It's not just you. I've always loved wandering and exploring there. As much as I like the new changes, I will definitely miss it.
Dreyja Nov 13th 2010 7:57PM
I adored that place. I really did. What's been done to it by the horde and specifically the goblins certainly does it's job to amp up the faction conflict for me. ;-)

For what I've seen it's still autumn-y and the Ravencrest (?) statue is still apparently there. It seems what you like best about the zones is still somewhat there :)
Casterdps Nov 14th 2010 2:16AM
Oh, the Ravencrest monument remains? That makes me SO HAPPY. My little Sindorei elf sat down with a a lore-nerd friend and had her whole War of the Ancients lore dump there, and I've always loved that spot. Even though I'm going to play a goblin, I know, and quest through Azshara, I've been really irrationally worried about this.

From what I can tell, it's going to be hard to "miss" Azshara because it's not gone. It's got a lot more stuff in it now, but most of what made it worth visiting before is still there now... unless you really, really wanted to kill some rogue blood elves...
Chris Nov 13th 2010 7:10PM
This is exactly what I'm most looking forward to in Cataclysm: zones that were never quite finished for vanilla release finally getting their turn to shine. Azshara has always been a particularly beautiful zone, but tragically empty (I would often skip it on later alts, although sometimes stop by just to take a look and its pretty trees). Great look at this once-forgotten place, I can't wait to play my goblin there!
Ametrine Nov 13th 2010 7:19PM
Opposite of "day rlves", obviously.

Me, I have always loved Azshara, and I have spent lots of time there. For one, there were great fishing pools off the coast. When stonescale eels were in demand, I would spend hours there at a time, trying to see if I could beat my last 'score' of mithril trunks. I made a lot of gold that way. And there was a special fishing spot that a good friend showed me: it was our special shared place. And sometimes, when I was feeling lonely, I would just go there to hang out. It has some of the most lovely scenery in the game, at least to me. Now Cata is coming and I find myself torn between two emotions: glad that the zone is finally getting some attention, distressed that it's being drawn and quartered by goblins. I do know that I will have to find a new special place to go when I feel the need to be alone, and that does make me a little sad.
rainbowblack Nov 13th 2010 7:48PM
i wish i could fly over the original zone..just once
Angrycelt Nov 13th 2010 9:41PM
In the PTR, I admit that I exploited the druid flight glitch and got dozens and dozens of aerial photos of the old world, and places with the biggest changes such as Azshara got a good chunk of pics taken of them. Like apparently quite a few others, I always liked the serenity, the history, and the feeling of desolation that it brought across. It really was the ghosts of the old battlefield walking around.
Maleficus Nov 14th 2010 2:54AM
If you have a mage or priest I'd recommend taking a trip to Winterspring. There's a small peninsula jutting out from the cliffs east of Frostwhisper Gorge that's prefect for slow fall/levitate if you want to get an aerial view of Azshara. Doesn't get you over the entire zone obviously, but it's still pretty good.
