Guest Post: Azshara revamp ushers in new level range, epic stories

I would hazard a guess that a vast majority of WoW players have never even been to Azshara. Honestly, since Molten Core is no longer a major raid zone and the Runes of Fire Lords just put themselves out, there really isn't much reason to. Those of us who raided in vanilla made weekly trips there to pick up our Aqual Quintessence, and I was also an herbalist, so I would spend another hour or so out there looking for Dreamfoil because of needing a bag full of mana pots to raid in those pre-potion sickness days.
Clearly, the zone was unfinished. There was one quest hub, if you could call it that, because there were only a very small number of quests there. Blizzard tried to bring people to the unused zone later on by adding in the level 50 class quests that led up to Sunken Temple -- but really, in the process of leveling, you could basically ignore Azshara and move on.
I hated the original Azshara because it was out in the middle of nowhere and fairly poorly designed. It was hard to get to places because of all the rocky cliffs, and passages up and down from the beach to the cliffs were too few and far between. It could even be dangerous at level 60 before The Burning Crusade's stamina inflation; lots of mobs feared and or put debuffs on you, and there were elites wandering around over huge portions of the zone.
Sadly the few fond memories I have of old Azshara are gone, as well. When Azuregos was up in vanilla, the entire zone would become a raiding guild, PvP fight zone as the top Horde and Alliance raiding guilds fought over who could tag him, killing flagged members of the group who got him, hoping to wipe them and inflict them all with the debuff. It could get fun and entertaining -- and one time, it even caused our server to be shut down.
Well, that has all changed come Cataclysm.
A whole new level for Azshara
Azshara is now a low-level zone for Horde characters, run by the goblins. A complete decimation of the zone's natural resources is in effect: strip mining, massive lumber harvesting, and there is a giant race track running through a good portion of the zone, making it look as if the goblins did their best to redevelop their lost home island of Kezan.
The map of the zone now looks pretty much like a sideways version of the Horde symbol. As soon as you zone out of the rear exit of Orgrimmar, you see the goblin work in effect. In moments of zoning out of Orgrimmar, quests find you hijacking a shredder, cutting down trees, killing night elves and even an Ancient. You help in the giant quarry that replaces the Azshara crater, killing basilisks and refleshifying (I believe that is the actual term used in the quest) miners who were turned to stone.

A truly epic quest chain
As your low-level Horde character or high-level completionist character (talking to those Loremasters out there), you will kill numerous Alliance-based NPCs, mostly night elves but some gnomes too -- yay for punting! Many of the mob types originally in Azshara are still there, but their levels have been adjusted to fit the new zone. The giants wandering the hills are now level 20ish elites; there are chimera around level 18 to 20. Also there are still naga, and they are not happy about the new goblin incursion.
As you move through the zone, one of the most amazing changes is the effect of a post-Wrath storyline on the new Azshara. There is no "Lore ... LOL!" being done here; this is a true continuation of the actual storyline of World of Warcraft. Malygos is dead; the blue dragonflight is in shambles; Deathwing wishes to wipe the remaining blue dragonflight out completely. However, Kalecgos and Azuregos want to save them, and with your help, they work to fight off an invasion by the black dragonflight.
This quest chain is epic -- so epic that I do not want to ruin it with spoilers. If you play Alliance, make a goblin just to play through their starting area and Azshara; if you play Horde, make an alt or play through the quests on your main. The redesign of Azshara has made the most underused, empty, incomplete zone in World of Warcraft become a place you really do not want to miss. The blue posts saying they "brought the epic" and a complete experience to Azshara are not lying. It is a brand new zone. It is worth your time; you absolutely do not want to skip Azshara.

Personally, I always thought Azshara was the prettiest of the Old World zones. I just love the whole autumnal vibe of the area. I'm definitely looking forward it to not sucking.

I'm torn about the zone.
I love autumn. A part of me loves that part of it. But seriously? I hate the zone. One quest hub isn't bad, but the zone was basically designed with flying in mind. I did the zone once just to see what it was about, and I kind of liked the western part of it, but yeah. If I had to venture past that one area, I hated it. I loathed it. I avoided it.
Now I get the chance to fly around it. I can finally do stuff there and appreciate the look without hating the shape.
And now the goblins are in town. They mess up all that scenery. They do their thing. I haven't seen much of it all, but I have seen Kezan from a friend's house.
But it's the goblins. They are awesome. I can't really stay mad at them. At least not these goblins.

"I have seen Kezan from a friend's house."
Let me guess? Ms Palin is your friend?

You had me at "kill numerous Alliance-based NPCs, mostly Night Elves."

Question, is Gallywix still MIA? I mean, it's like he has dropped off the face of Azeroth after the Lost Isles event...
/crosses fingers that the headlines will be "Today's top story; the Trade Prince has committed suicide. Apparently he stabbed himself thirty-seven times in the back, with an exploding knife, while tied to a chair and then set himself on fire."
/bets on Sassy Hardwrench or Mida Silvertongue becoming the new Goblin leader.

I would love another female Horde leader so much.
Frak it, I'd love another female faction leader so much. Especially one that's not so defined by her interactions with men :coff:Jaina:coff:. I mean, of all the factions, I feel like the goblins and the gnomes are probably the least gender-aware, with maybe the Draenei and the Tauren coming in second (and those probably being... aware and reverent of the gender differences in terms of say, propagating the species, but not sexist per se.) I don't see why there are so few strong, independent women in Warcraft (though I would argue that the existing characters aren't bad, they're just not exemplary.)
And a tough goblin chick would be *rad* in power. Especially Mida- a player submitted character becoming a faction leader would be such a testament to Blizzard's ability to respond to player feedback.
Eddy Nov 13th 2010 10:25PM
And, y'know, while I'm at it, some things I've been thinking about.
There's really no obligation on Blizzard to create a game that's exemplary in terms of powerful women. Most games are made with men in mind, and I'm sure most men don't really think about the issue- they're not sexist, per se, but characters are male by default. (Hell, I'm female, and sadly most characters are default male for me too, which I don't really like.) But they're in a position where they could change that assumption- they could create a world where most cultures aren't biased against women, that there are valuable qualities for leadership besides the natural advantage most men have over women, which is physical strength, and that women don't need to be defined by the men they're around.
They're doing pretty well. I am not saying that I think Blizzard is sexist or that they need to change their ways dramatically- I just think that people in general could do more to balance things out, and that if culture played a stronger role, society would follow.

Well gnomes might be getting a queen, if some of the spoilers I've read are true.

@Eddy: The thing is, the comparative lack of strong female lore figures in WoW is especially jarring considering the RTS games and the history of the 'verse is filled with them. WC3 in particular. We had characters like Garona, and Aegwynn, both Windrunner sisters, Jaina, Tyrande. All taking active, important roles in the proceedings and making a difference in the story. This was never a universe known for obnoxious fridge stuffing-esque antics or putting women on buses until WoW came out (see: Varian's wife).
And yeah, it does feel like in WoW, all the prominent women were put on a bus. The few strong women that are present are silent and in the background. We have gotten a few crumbs here and there, like Lady Liadrin (who promptly dropped out of the story for an entire expansion, until she got a minor cameo in the Quel'Delar quest chain). But on the whole, it's been rather abysmal. I won't even get into how infuriating Jaina's Flanderization has been, nor this backlash-y nonsense going on with Sylvanas in Cataclysm. "Watch your clever mouth, you bitch" pretty much says it all, doesn't it?
And Tyrande...my god, Tyrande. A woman who led the Night Elven people for 10,000 years, as spiritual leader, military commander? Literally did nothing but stand in Darnassus in a robe this whole time (they did let her out briefly for a couple of quests). When does she finally gets to do something? When her husband comes back. Sigh.

I will miss the beauty of Azshara. I always hoped more quests would be developed there, but am horrified to see it ripped into such ugliness.
Artificial Nov 14th 2010 2:25AM
It's a large zone. You can't miss the beauty of it if it's not gone, which it isn't. If you decide to sit in a strip-mine somewhere instead of head out for the unspoiled areas, it's your own fault...
Dreyja Nov 14th 2010 1:51PM
True Artificial, but that doesn't detract from the fact that a huge tract of it has been transformed into something disgusting by comparison (from the autumnal nature bias). You can't say that there isn't a sense of peril to the rest of the zone when the primary people group therein have a nasty tendency of turning anything they touch into toxic waste dumps. Heck, look at the goblin section of Orgrimmar. Some people find that to be part of their charm, of course.

"...and the Runes of Fire Lords just put themselves out,"
I had to pause for a good 2 minutes laughing at this.
Not sure why, but it struck me as wicked funny :D

"Basically, it is a harbor with a giant cannon pointed at who knows what, sitting right where the Bay of Storms used to be.'
It's pointing directly at Stormwind. The Goblins built and aimed it as proof of their allegiance to the Horde.
xoxotl Nov 13th 2010 10:59PM
But it's pointed the wrong way, unless they're going for a really impressive over-the-horizon shot.
Boobah Nov 13th 2010 11:29PM
Given where Bilgewater Harbor is relative to Stormwind, I don't think there *are* any non-impressive, over the horizon shots available.
Although I suppose you could always go for an under-the-horizon shot, which would be pretty impressive in its own way.
pandaba Nov 14th 2010 2:42AM
So this means the Horde have deployed their first ICBC (Inter-Continental Ballistic Cannonball). Which means, the Alliance should follow suit, probably with something developed by the Gnomes.
I'm looking forward to the arms race, cold war, and the ever present threat of Mutual Assured Destruction. There will be no further need for city raids when Garrosh can simply hit the big red button conveniently placed next to the throne with the helpful label saying "Don't Push".

I always like the old Azshara because it was rather convenient for horde, being close to Orgrimmar, and the quest chain there was easy and rewarding (pick up tablets, then make a run to the capitals and to the mage guy and back for around 50k xp total).
zaababy Nov 13th 2010 11:52PM
It's going to be fun--can't wait to make worgen and goblins, try out all the new stuff. Really wish I had more character slots on my server!!
