Reader UI of the Week: Tian's UI
Each week, WoW Insider brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, spotlighting the latest user interface addons. Have a screenshot of your own UI that you'd like to submit? Send your screenshots, along with info on what mods you're using, to readerui@wow.com.
Welcome to another exciting episode of Reader UI of the Week, your repository of all things community user interfaces. I'm still working on my upgrades to my UI for Cataclysm, so you fine people don't get to see my deal yet. Soon. Soon. In the meantime, why don't we check out a submission from the ol' email box?
Speaking of, I would love to get another big backlog of reader UI submissions that are Cataclysm-themed or designed specifically for the new expansion. If you've got something you've been working on for expansion day, show me! I would love to spotlight some Cataclysm user interfaces that are going to happily see the light of day when the world comes to the brink of death.
As Wrath of the Lich King comes to a close with elemental invasions, Thrall babysitting lots of tiny elemental babies, and cultists totally wrecking our cities, I wanted to feature Tian's user interface. Why feature a user interface with so much Wrath artwork and motif? I think I want to say goodbye to Wrath of the Lich King in the best way I can -- talking about the art and the user interface that showcases it.
Let's hear it, Tian:
Thanks for the submission, Tian. I'll come out the gate swinging with my less than enthusiastic approval of so much art on the bottom panel. A quick adjustment on the opacity slider will make things much more readable, especially in the chat frame. So, that's out of the way.
Back in The Burning Crusade, I made some custom blood elf art to go with my paladin's user interface after I rerolled for my guild. The blood elf shields, colors, and motif were really appealing and something completely new to World of Warcraft at the time. Having the expansion's motif as part of my expansion (later on, only the colors) made my user interface feel like it belonged rather than just existing. I think Tian's user interface brought me back to a time when I liked the expansion's motif as part of my setup.
Gone will be the icy blues of ice stalactites, the ominous, conspicuously hat-shaped Icecrown Citadel, and the snowy tundra. Gone are the tuskarr and the Fjord, the icy seas and frozen skulls. I actually feel a little sad to see it all go by the wayside. Blue has always been a pretty decent UI color choice, and Wrath's motif was a strong point in many custom interface setups.
Tian's UI is another reminiscent of the old Warcraft 3 and StarCraft days, where the art substitutes the RTS interface. I like the motif pairing of the bottom panel with the top LDB bar, creating similar effects that tie everything together.
I think Tian's setup would work very well on any type of resolution, wide-screen or not. There are plenty of emails in my inbox about interfaces for monitors that aren't wide-screen, and I think something like Tian's setup would give those players some good inspirations. Height similarities between addons, dipping the middle part of the art, and finding uses for the empty space would make this a competent UI on any size monitor.
Thank you so much for the submission, Tian, and thank you all for letting me say goodbye to an interface motif that will be sorely missed. Soon, it will all be molten lava, Deathwing jaws and broken aspects of Stormwind. It will be exciting, I'm sure.
We haven't answered mail in awhile and it's been piling up, so how about some email answers?
Also, if you're recently coming back for Cataclysm and haven't been around in WoW for awhile, we have got a great guide about what has changed since you last saw the game.
That's all for this week, ladies and gents. Next week, hopefully some neat pictures of my new setup, another fun UI to discuss, and much, much more. Don't forget to send me your Cataclysm user interfaces, and I'd love to see what types of UI art people are working on for the new expansion with a brand new motif.
Interested in getting the most out of your user interface? Come back once a week for more examples of reader UIs. For more details on individual addons, check out Addon Spotlight, or visit Addons 101 for help getting started.

Hey Mathew,
Thanks for having a column for those of us obsessed with UIs. A repository like this gives a place to go for inspiration.
Obviously, the center point for my UI are the wonderful Demonic art panels available in Btex UI panels. I am a fan of symmetry, so I tried to use the panels in that way, even though I used two elements on the right and only the chat box on the left.
My addons include:
- Chocolate Bar at the top to display my many buttons for addons and things I need to do quickly such as switch specs or gear sets.
- Elkano's BuffBars for Buffs and Debuffs in the upper right corner of my screen.
- IceHUD in the center for my target's information and who the Target of target is.
- ButtonTimers for all my characters -- makes everything clear and easy.
- Prat for my chat functions.
- Dominos action bars.
- SexyMap for my sweet map graphics -- the runes slowly rotate.
- Skada for my threat and damage display.
- The target portrait is only visible when I have a target, and the other blank space at the bottom has actions bars only visible when I mouse over them.
Thanks for checking out my UI. Keep up the good work,
Tianshaan/Mahga of Terokkar, Gypsies Guild

Thanks for the email, FireSoul. Take a look at the buttons you use the most as well as the keys you hit the most. Start at the very beginning and define your core roles and core abilities, and redesign from there. For instance, as a tank, I usually have my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand on the mouse for movement. Therefore, my tanking abilities and main buttons are on the left side of the keyboard, with appropriate bindings and modifiers. The mouse has cooldowns, movement buttons and some panic buttons. Take your role and see what you're hitting the most, and go from there.Dear Mathew,
I am writing with a request for some assistance. For the longest time, I have been playing as a button clicker. I have adapted beyond the basic, though. I have been using Bartender for quite a while now. Most of my UI setups, which are different for each class I have, are starting to feel like they are holding me back. I don't know how to really adapt into these better looking UIs. Having been playing since vanilla days, it is hard to change formats.
What could you suggest for me?
P.S. Thank you in advance for any help and for a wonderful column.
FireSoul
Thanks for the email, Crazyates. I took your suggestion a few weeks back and wrote a bit about the new changes to the World of Warcraft default user interface, and it's mostly positive. Many aspects of the new UI are perfect and I love them, especially the ability notification system. Less so about the raid frames, but they are getting better. Blizzard has priorities, and addon developers do such a great job at creating unit and raid frames that it seems low on the priority list. Mostly positive changes, though. I'd love to see what's in store for later down the road, and I cannot wait to see the new dungeon/raid boss interface on the map.Can you do an article on the new and improved Stock UI for 4.0.1? I recently took a break from WoW (maybe I'll start again when Cata comes out... /sign), but my brother still plays. He was showing me some of the new features that are I thought were cool. These new features are making addons less and less necessary.

Thanks for the email, Daedhir. Way back when, I discussed Daedhir's UI and liked it a lot. His UI is nice because it keeps a very Warcraft-y feel while not going overboard with the graphics, and a lot of people who read this column respect that. If you're looking for a setup for Cataclysm that isn't going to get in your way, I can definitely recommend checking out Daedhir's setup. I like the new stuff, Daedhir. Keep up the good work.Hey, Mat,
Just wanted to let you know that my UI is mostly updated for Cataclysm. As always it's available on WoWInterface, and you can read more about it on my blog at daedhirui.blogspot.com.
I know lots of people are looking for a UI that will work with the new patch, so I tried to get mine as good as I could before today's release.
I've also been improving things a lot since I last wrote to you, and I'd be interested in hearing what you think about what I've done.
Thanks,
Daedhir

I'm going to have to fix my UI with the new resolution changes in 4.0.3 that blindsided me... not really looking forward to it. :/ I needed to move away from the default interface, but constantly tweaking a custom UI can sometimes be more annoying than fun... *doom&gloom* :P Wish me luck! xP

Ditto. Today's changes totally screwed with my UI. My kgPanels were all slightly too big, my Dominos were all shifted slightly down and to the right, and Recount got bigger. >.<
Took me about and hour to tweak it back to where I like it.

I *think* this is because the UI scaling option is disabled by default since the newest patch, even if it was enabled by default beforehand. I reticked the box, & turned my UI scale down to where it used to be, & everything fell (mostly) into place.

@pancakes
Yeah thats what it was. At first I was thinking that kgpanels and dominos needed an update but after trying to figure out why the default UI was too big I noticed the option was unchecked ...
Have to have a small as possible or else I feel claustrophobic and can't figure out whats going on.

Very stylish UI. I think it kind of matches the DK vibe, Wrath related or not. I'd like to see what he changes it to for Cataclysm though. Lots of red and stuff, I'd imagine =).

So is he using a view port addon or does he just like to randomly block of a quarter to a third of his viewable screen? Thats not even considering buffs and raid frames.
Am I to guess that below (again I'm guessing here) his target health is the targets debuffs? Or are they a repeat of his button timers?
At least he doesn't have a hud AND some unit frames...
Drbenru Nov 16th 2010 6:51PM
Btex has vieport options, based on where his DK is sitting he's using it.
The icons below his target health on IceHUD are the target's debuffs, in the screen shot it shows 17sec left on frost fever and 22 sec left on Blood Plague, but he's probably paying more attention to the debuffs he applies as they are repeated in button timers.
IceHUD can also show when and what the target is casting so you can use interrupts.
I personally use YSSDrop in my Chocolate bar on the far Right Side as a launcher menu for all my add-ons that I don't need quick access to. So he could put, parrot, ICEHud config, Prat etc, etc, in a single drop down menu from his chocolateBar and keep it cleaner and easier to read.
I used to use IceHUD but I switched to Quartz and Pitbull, cause I needed a multifunction UI and HUDs work great for DPS but I really needed more on my tank and specially on my healer.

Question for you:
Have you come across an addon for easy glyph management? I've found that I swap out my major glyphs on a daily basis (one set for mage dungeon soloing, one for everything else) and frequently find myself forgetting to set them back at the end of the run. Plus, swapping them out one at a time is a bit tedious.
Something like a little window saying "you're using glyph set 1" (or whatever) would be a step in the right direction, though what I'd really like is 1-click glyph set swapping. Since inscribing each glyph involves a cast-time, that probably isn't likely, but it's worth asking.
Alternately: can glyph-swapping be accomplished with macros? Hm.

fits the class. personally I don't like blocking off that much screen space. I'll most likely revert mostly back to the standard UI with cataclysm and build back up according to what I find useful.

Holy crap, a UI that doesn't look like it belongs in Star Trek Online! I'm impressed!

A little more advice for FireSoul, think about your rotation when you are setting up your bar and think about what number keys feel the most comfortable to hit the most often. My main rotation hangs out on my 1 - 4 button and my spam buttons are almost always on the 3 key no matter what class. Why? Because hitting the same button with my ring finger or pinky isn't as comfortable as hitting it with my middle. The other things I think about for button layout is what combo is the least comfortable and I just stick procs on those keybind. I keep most of my AoE stuff bound to Shift-3 and Shift-4 and my Shift-2 is usually some type of "opener". So, on my hunter Shift-2 puts up hunter's mark and sends in my pet, on my lock it applies 2 dots and starts pet attack. My procs usually hang out on Shift-1 since it's not the most comfy key combo for me it's nice to only hit it periodically. Ctrl-(1-6) is used for a few different things as well, but it's mostly on my classes that can off heal.
The best advice I can give beyond those few suggestion is to try something for more than just a few minutes on a training dummy. Give your new keybinds a few days and you'll be amazed and how quickly you find your groove.

It looks really pretty, but the fact that the lower bar covers a large majority of their screen makes me not like it

Go back about 7 days, and read the introduction to UI of the week.
"Have a screenshot of your own UI that you'd like to submit? Send your screenshots, along with info on what mods you're using, to readerui@wow.com."
YES! Look at that! Its right there!

Ok I may have missed this, but I would like to know what are good addons for a pally tank/DPS after 4.0.1/3? Is there anything out there for holy power something that tells me I am fully charged? I have power auras classic and I can config that I know but anything for holy power its self?
dodgeballer2005 Nov 17th 2010 1:32AM
I'm playing around with the addons, and got that same skin, but the tex addon isn't working. And dominos is a bit too big compared. Any way I can fix these issues?
