Insider Trader: Tailoring in Cataclysm

The state of all the professions in Cataclysm is still in a bit of flux, but at least most of the recipes have been added to the beta now. Like most professions, tailoring post-Cataclysm is going to look very similar to the way it looks now. Sure, all the numbers are higher, but the structure of the profession is basically the same.
One of the key differences, however, is that while tailoring has historically required mostly cloth and vendor trash for recipes, it is now a serious consumer of "volatile" elementals. Look through the recipes you start doing in Wrath of the Lich King and you'll see mostly bolts of Frostweave. You still need the new type of cloth (Bolt of Embersilk Cloth); however, virtually every single recipe you'll want to train on, as well as most of the actually useful (and valuable) recipes, are going to involve Volatile Water, Volatile Fire, Volatile Life, and Volatile Air. This is also true of the other gear-crafting professions, leatherworking and blacksmithing; however, tailoring had one thing going for it that other professions didn't: Unraveling.
Unraveling was a beta skill that allowed tailors to take cloth and turn it into Volatile Water and Fire. Unfortunately, it was taken off the trainers and removed from peoples' spellbooks a while ago. No explanations; however, Blizzard greatly reduced the number of Volatiles needed for tailoring around the same time.
One thing is for sure: Like in Northrend, the most common sources for elemental mats in Cataclysm content are mobs and gathering. This means that the price of Volatiles, which will greatly influence the price of leveling professions and making gear for all the new characters, will probably be inflexibly high at first. They're not easily farmed, so unlike prices for gathered goods (which should eventually settle down as the prices draw in fair-weather farmers like me who flood the market), prices for Volatiles might actually increase as more people hit 85. The demand for Volatile-based goods will increase as people start raiding, and I don't foresee any coincidental increase in supply.
Oh yeah, tailoring
So like the current version of of the skill, tailors are going to be getting some pretty nice recipes. I'd like to draw your attention to a few things:
- There are two types of BoE Spellthreads of two qualities. You can put Enchanted or Ghostly Spellthreads on pants to add stats, or you can use the more expensive epic versions, currently called Powerful Enchanted and Powerful Ghostly Spellthreads. People will likely use the cheaper version when they're poor, playing alts, or enhancing temporary gear. Of course, there are new tailor-only versions that are cheaper and stronger. The other tailor-only bonus enhancements go on your cloak and require 500 skill.
- There are two non-profession-specific bags, as well as a pair of 36-slot bags for enchanting and herbalism.
- There is a metric buttload of gear you can craft.
- Of all the "flavor" stuff you can make, the High Society Top Hat will be the coolest one.
- There appears to be no current replacement for Northrend Cloth Scavenging; however, it's not been proven that it doesn't still work in Cataclysm.
Cooldowns
The new cooldown material you can make is called Dreamcloth. The cooldowns that create it are called Dream of [random place]; each takes a different Volatile and should have a one-week cooldown that's not shared. This, of course, evens out to one a day. The exception should be the Dream of Destruction, which will take five Chaos Orbs (the new Frozen Orbs) and have no cooldown. I imagine at first it won't be worth using Orbs on Dreamcloth; however, as we get farther along in the expansion, it might become worth it.
High demand at first
I'm looking forward to tailoring in Cataclysm. I actually had every plan of trying to get a tailor to max level before Cataclysm hit the servers, but then I found out about that stupid "no crafting alts" rule and have been forced to spend the time I'd have rather used on tailoring to level two absolutely horrendous terribly bad tanks. (Pro tip of the day: if you see a level 78 paladin named Harmun from Drenden in your random, just leave the party and wait the half hour -- if you're going to spend half an hour going in circles and cursing me under your breath, you might as well do it in Dalaran.)
But yeah, tailoring is first on my list once I've gotten my main and two crafting alts to 84. There's going to be a lot of demand for gear during the first few months and a lot of demand for Spellthreads and bags no matter how far along we are in the expansion.

Sorry for the double post, but I just thought of some questions about engineering:
What's the status of our various tinker enchants? There've been some new glove and belt enchants, but I haven't seen a new parachute or a new Nitro Boosts? Will we just be using the old spell in Cataclysm? That seems to be what's happening with Blacksmithing, as there's no new Socket Bracer or Socket Glove spell, but the mats on those have been greatly reduced.
And will Cataclysm tinker enchants still be non-exclusive with normal enchants?

So... the important bit. What does this give us raiding wise? Anything?

Even for a caster, Tailoring is probably not going to be the best raiding profession, but if you choose it for the other benefits, then you'll at least get the Tailor only spellthreads.
If you're like me and picked Tailoring on a prot pally cause you're a mount whore, then it does nothing at all for you. :)

Oh my, I am not the only tailor paladin?
I am still leveling (silk cloth is expensive), but I want to be ready when cata hits, and fly around on my magic carpet. I hope plate gear does not cut the threads on the carpet :)

Raiding wise, there's still the cloak embroiders, which *are* upgraded for Cataclysm, even if they don't look it at first glance. Rank 2 and using Volatiles instead of specialty cloth and all. The lightweave proc and engineering haste tinkers actually make for a very powerful combo, especially for a class that has a good set of cooldowns to pop.
The increased cloth drops should make getting bandages easier too!
@(cutaia)
There is the swordguard proc, at least! Yeah, even that's probably not worth it. Though it would be a decent threat enchant if necessary, I guess.

Silk is expensive? I'm transferring to your realm.
Silk is really easy to farm up, just solo the 30-40 instance of your choice and you'll be swimming in it.

So, is it safe to say that Cataclysm Tailoring doesn't rely on Enchanting materials as much as Wrath Tailoring did?
brian Nov 18th 2010 2:39AM
Judging by Wowhead, I would say yes. In a surprising way, in fact.
For instance, the reagents for Dreamcloth only have Bolts of Embersilk, not Bolts of *Imbued* Embersilk. In fact, there doesn't seem to be any Imbued Embersilk whatsoever.
Volatiles seem to have replaced Enchanting mats as the "other" mat Tailoring uses.

That's disheartening... I always loved how well my tailoring and enchanting complimented one another.

How much exactly is a metric-buttload? Just a valid question of curiosity!
my2cents Nov 18th 2010 1:27AM
A metric buttload is roughly equal to .82 American buttloads.
Daedalus Nov 18th 2010 8:00AM
I think you're using an older method of conversion, my2cents. The .82 factor was correct when the buttload was standardized 100 years ago, but owing to how much larger the average American butt has gotten compared to butts in primarily SI based countries, the BISSM (Bureau of International Silly Standards and Measurements) has recently adopted a conversion factor of 1 ABL = 1.45 SBL.
It's also important to note that while the SI system uses decimal based prefixes, i.e.: millibuttload, centibuttload, decibuttload, etc., the American buttload is still using the old system of measurements: 2 smidgens to a bunch, 2 bunches to mess, 2 messes a whole mess, 2 whole messes to a buttload, 2 buttloads to a crap ton.

could be that they removed unraveling temporarily (or permanently) to not give an undue advantage for tailors in flooding the market with easy acquired volatiles.
I remember my envy of herbalists and miners in TBC and their ezPrimals.
Not that I would complain if they gave tailoring the upside, but it is probably for the best not to boost a single crafting skill like this.
I case they see a much too low flood of volatiles they might reintroduce it.
Kaylad Nov 18th 2010 6:42AM
The solution to the "no alts" thing is to make sure that the characters that you spend the most time on/level fastest are dual-crafters and the ones that you're slower on are your gatherers - or you play the AH and buy your mats instead of gathering them yourself, of course (Blizzard appear to have very kindly raised the gold-cap just as I reached the old one, saving me time shuffling gold around various alts). I have two or three dedicated gathering alts and the rest all have two crafting professions (sometimes overlapping if I want, for example, all three tailoring cloth specialisations) . Then again, I am an altoholic with a slight touch of OCD (or CDO - alphabetical order and all that) so feel the need to have one of each class _and_ profession, though I _have_ had to split my "one of each race and class" across two servers (alli on one and horde on t'other).
Rob Nov 18th 2010 7:08AM
It should only take 20 hours to get from 80 to 85. Maybe a bit more. Anyway its something most of us can do in a week. Even I with 8 80s (3 Dks) won't be all put out that my 80s cant get to max level in cata without some work. Considering their time between expansions is 2ish years, you have time to get your crafting alts leveled up. Yes, this means actually leveling, and I hate my lock so I'm not looking forward to leveling her. But really I think its a fair compromise.
MusedMoose Nov 18th 2010 8:18AM
Quite possibly the greatest new tailoring item ever:
http://cata.wowhead.com/item=54441
Not only does the dress itself look very nifty, but look at how it looks on male characters as opposed to females. ...might want to have some brain bleach ready. ^_^
Now, if only the mats weren't utterly ridiculous for a white item. @_@ I want this for my NE fire mage, but damn....
Eddy Nov 18th 2010 11:15AM
...I think I love you. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
The shape of the sleeves is great, the colors are really pretty, and while I mostly want one on my (female) mage, I might have to put it on my (male) rogue once or twice for my own amusement.
lolikitty Nov 18th 2010 9:32AM
I wish i never even knew about the unraveling thing, it would have been so so sweet. Maybe they could put it back and make it "a chance to receive volatile" ? Miners have it, herbalists have it, give it to skinners and tailors and call it a day ok ? Ok ? We friends ? High five ? No ? /cries
nieboh Nov 18th 2010 11:15AM
I'm not sure what you mean about "Miners have it, herbalists have it". The unraveling sounds more like what jewelcrafters (prospecting) and scribes (milling) do.
Eddy Nov 18th 2010 11:54AM
Yeah, tailors are so left out. I can't believe that crafting professions don't also have a chance to gather. It is so unfair. You'd think you couldn't pick up another profession if you wanted to gather stuff or anything.
