World of Warcraft turns 6, but no free pet to be awarded

World of Warcraft's 6th Anniversary!World of Warcraft turns six on November 23rd, 2010! It's been a truly incredible six years, and we'd like to thank you all for joining us on this momentous occasion. To celebrate, players that log into the game between the dates of November 30th and December 14th will receive a feat of strength added to their Achievements. We look forward to another great year ahead and many more to come!
But what about that free anniversary pet?

Does this mean no pet? :(
Does this mean no pet? :(
The Baby Blizzard Bear was a gift that we mailed to players for logging in for our five-year anniversary. We plan to reserve this sort of celebratory bonus for the most notable milestones or events.
But I digress. Yes, it's sad that we're not getting a pet this year. And yes, it is weird that the anniversary period doesn't include the actual anniversary of the game. Still, any disappointment stems from Blizzard just plain being too generous in the past with this kind of stuff, so you can't hit the company too hard for coming up short this year.

Tycho Brahe had a pet moose. Why can't I?
Yomamma Nov 17th 2010 3:09PM
Why spend the time designing an in game pet to give away, when you can sell them at 10 bucks a piece ;)
Furlover Nov 17th 2010 3:14PM
Truth!
Slaytanic Nov 17th 2010 3:14PM
Unfortunately, this.

I've only been playing WOW for a couple of years....yes, I started after WoTLK came out. One thing I have noticed since then is my monthly subscription has not gone up. All my other bills have in the economy. If Blizzard wants to sell me in game pets...and that in turn keeps my monthly subscription from rising, then I'm all for it!!
Noyou Nov 17th 2010 3:27PM
Grrr. So people who have not paid for wow in 3mo or more can get a free week but the people who have been around for a while can't even get a free pet? Lame. Downrank all you want but sheesh. They could have done a dozen things or more. Something easy as double honor/justice points for a day? Something. Anything. But no. Sad. Very sad.
Saltytoes Nov 17th 2010 3:29PM
If they don't give us the greatest mini pet EVER for #10... I might cry.
Zanathos Nov 17th 2010 3:32PM
The free week isn't out of the goodness of the hearts, it's a marketing gimmick to get people hooked for Cata. It's not like Blizzard is doing them a favor.
Rufio Nov 17th 2010 3:37PM
@ Noyou.... erm, how about a friggen EXPANSION? Shesh, no pleasing some people :-P
Rob Nov 17th 2010 3:41PM
Yes it's nice that the sub price hasnt gone up. However, the economic situation right now has changed. Wages have gone down across the board. While resource prices have fluctuated, its now much cheaper to get people, since there are many out of work very talented people out there. This results in saving to the company. It's a good price point, and inflation hasn't been all that much in the last few years. If they were going to raise the price, with all the competition and many games going FTP, they would certainly lose customers. I know they already lost alot of people due to the economy. (many in my guild have left bc they are unemployed)

This, pretty much. Older players can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the subscription price has been the same since release. If selling pets for 10 bucks is Blizzard's way of of not raising the subscription, I heartily welcome it.

@Rufio
Erm we are PAYING for the friggen expansion yes? Paying well. Paying to play a game- a game mind you. So yeah. Excuse me if I sound off. If they had said nothing and did nothing I would have shrugged it off but to come out on a blue post and say hey enjoy this feat of strength- sorry if I am not a little underwhelmed. It is the second time I felt they slapped the face of the loyal customer. And by the looks of these replies, my gosh I am not alone! I can only hope they piss me off a couple more times before the 7th so I can cancel my pre-order and fig out what to do with all my free time :)
woecip Nov 17th 2010 4:28PM
Because they can make two pets, give one away , sell one and STILL sell the same amount of pet codes. Take off your tin foil hats.
toddcore Nov 17th 2010 4:44PM
@Noyou
I must be misunderstanding you. Are you really saying that if they had said and done absolutely nothing at all you would be perfectly happy, but because they are *only* giving you a free feat of strength you're upset? I understand feeling some disappointment if you were looking forward to a pet but to be angry over not being given something you were never promised in the first place makes me question your sanity.
Speaking of which, I'm pretty mad at you. I never received that large sum of cash and BMW you didn't say you were going to give me. If you keep this up I'll have to stop being your friend.
Lemons Nov 17th 2010 5:39PM
Yea, I pretty much thought this after about 10 seconds of hearing the news. I never thought Blizz would do something like this. Do they have any foresight at all? Even if they're not intentionally withholding pets in-game so they can sell them on the store it sure looks that way, and that's just not cool. Of course we have no way of knowing the reasoning behind no pet for the 6th anniversary, but either way Blizzard just went down a peg in my estimation.
I'd like to blame Activision, but I just don't see Kotick signing off on which pets appear where.
