Gnomey Love is the most recent video by RomireVids. This is the story of a gnome who gets dumped by his human girlfriend and then punted to Azuremyst Isle. While on the island, he enjoys a brief, one-sided romance with a shaman before traveling back to Azeroth. Once home, the gnome falls in love with a new gnome girl because he likes big butts, and he can not lie.
Gnomey Love is an interesting video, conceptually. I can see where Romire was going with it. Romire says that he was challenged with technical problems during the video's creation, and I think some of those problems showed in the final product. Still, this was a significant effort, and my hat's off to Romire for his work. I would recommend grabbing a copy editor in the next round, however, to help minimize some grammatical errors in the script. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.
Grammatical errors, poor music choices, lack of shadows, weak story concept and visually not-so-appealing. B for effort, but the final product is bit rubbish, honestly.
And as usual I predict a lot of bashful comments for not being "top notch perfect like movie", the way of internet I guess.
But to be fair I couldnt watch 9 minutes of if. The story jumped all over the place and I lost track at first minutes and didnt really think I should start again or the part where I did lost. There was few mistakes that I could understand but I would suggest more effects and whistles on next project. Lack of voice acting was kinda lackluster but I dont blame due getting actors can get the movie delayed more and if there isnt anyone to do them *shrug*.
The entire video seemed to be in slowmo. And the lack of effects was disconcerting. Seeing the characters cast spells over and over again with nothing but the casting animation made it seem weaker. Also, I didn't like the "you serve the elements, you can't love anyone" thing. I did laugh at the wedding scene, Mordent Evenshade in the background, still waiting for his audience.
Not trying to be overly critical, but it just seemed too slow on both a technical and story point of view. And to be honest, this kind of story has been done over and over again.
Some parts are technically bugged. You can see characters overlap one another when they walk, and you can see the Draenei model sitting underneath the wolf model before she changes. But as he said, there were technical problems.
i understand that the majority of machinima is fan made, and therefore has a strong likelihood of being amateurish...but really...wth is going on here? since when did this article start showcasing the muff cabbage that resulted from some guy sitting down one morning after a crazy night of standing in the fire, apparently filled with the spirit of creation and saying, "i can't get mom's car to head to eat n' park or the mall, so i think i'll make a wow movie instead!"? moviewatch has been slummin' something fierce lately....

why share it, then? so he can get a pat on the back from the public for trying? couldn't you have given him that advice in private and, if he took it to heart and came back with something better, then pushed it out for everyone to see? i get a sense you were trying to give him a leg up or something, but i kinda feel bad for the guy. if i was him i'd be rather embarrassed for having such a sub par product thrown to the internet wolves with nothing but a, "good effort, kid...better luck next time!".
please, mr. gray...i know i'm just one reader, and even though i may not always agree with your choices, i nonetheless respect them and have loved your column thus far...but please...let's end the week on a high note!
and in what will probably be a meager effort to rebut potential replies:
- you don't have to be an artist to be able to appreciate great art (or deride the lack thereof)
- kudos to everyone out there who likes the type of drivel that "let's them relax and turn their brains off" when they're taking time off from solving the world's problems one college philosophy class at a time...apologies, but not all of us share your penchant for such apparently classic vintage
- yes he tried, good for him, good effort. i wholly support his endeavors. unfortunately, i can't see the correlation between "tried really hard" and "quality machinima". anybody can put crap on the internet nowadays...but i personally come here to see what wheat the author has sifted from the chaff and until lately, haven't been disappointed. if that's not your thing, congratulations...we have different opinions.
As I wonder if the second point is addressed to one of my comments about 'summon you a drank' (if not, I apologize, but want to make sure):
Even as a college kid who discusses heavy issues (not 'solves', I'm not THAT full of myself.), there is a difference between 'well done humor that has good quality tech and well delivered punchlines, but is 'dumb' humor' to '...Ok, I would have to shut down most centers of my brain in order to ignore the glitchy-ness, cliche plot, and the grammar errors.'
I didn't bother watching past the second line of dialogue because of that. Evidently I didn't miss much, other than more of the same mistakes that would have led to my punching a hole through my monitor out of irritation.
got to admit i could follow it and hardly noticed any grammer mistakes. there where quite a lot of cliches but not the badly overly used ones. i quite liked it although i admit that this isnt as good as most things shown on moviewatch. i do however prefer watching not as good movies to watching the same lot over and over again. last comment is that ill addmit some of the techy stuff could be a little better but hey its a good effort and ya might not have learnt what you need to improve
Hardly noticed any grammer mistakes, huh? I wonder why your not able to pick up on them, their are more then usual. In fact, I would say this one has alot.. quite much more then average.
(Ugh, typing that up hurt me more than it'll hurt you reading it..)
Writing compelling romance is VERY hard to do and is almost impossible in the few min. that are available to a machinima film. Really people, it should be avoided unless it's VERY masterfully and subtly done. I'm afraid that the "story-line" here had me wincing, repeatedly.
Again, I always have to give kudos when someone puts effort into something (and isn't obnoxious about it. That's my "out" for how I've treated gigi in the past) but I can't say a lot that is positive about this video. :(
And advice from a story perspective: if you want to tackle love in your video, keep it simple and subtle. I'm all for seeing pairings that are unconventional. Heaven knows we need to see something other than Belf chick x EVERYONE, but you have to work hard to make it viable.
Anyhoo... sorry I wrote too much. I was rooting for this video at the start so I just wanted to contribute something. :)

Lost me at first cliche. Really, girl on girl action is the vehicle you chose to explain why the little dude got dumped?
Ok, well, um, thanks for the effort.
Euranne Nov 17th 2010 5:47PM
This was actually physically painful to watch. :/
Matrone Nov 17th 2010 12:25PM
No technical issue can explain the lame scrollin out in the model viewer as he was kicked and imo the story was a little off, sorry :(

What? Why?

That... hm...
That could have used some work...
Grammatical errors, poor music choices, lack of shadows, weak story concept and visually not-so-appealing. B for effort, but the final product is bit rubbish, honestly.
Keep trying, though.

The late Gene Siskel (of Siskel & Ebert) had the perfect response at times like these.
"Thank you for making a movie."

I had to give up after two typos in the first two lines of dialogue. Just because I'm like that.

So... moral of the story is that true love can only happen between two people of the same race?

That's right...be true to yourself.
