I think the achievement is for the rifts in the larger would, not the ones in the cities.

Well 1) they're not always up. 2) wowhead the achievement cuz you don't have to do it just from the cities.

I've only been there on a low-level character (my bank alt) so far-- but all I see is swirly smoke. I don't see an actual rift like in the screenshot. I get a cog-wheel and can click on it, and get some flavor text, but can't do anything with it.

I assumed that was due to my level, but I've read on the forums where people are saying the rifts aren't spawning in Ironforge.

@ronin - You do have to be 80 to enter the post-elemental portals - they are just in-game shortcuts to the dungeon finder for the event bosses - so under 80, you'll just get the flavor text. Also - if you 'lose' the fight with the elementals, they just dissappear, and no portals to the bosses form.

Jesse - you just have to help close one of each type, anywhere in the world to get the achievement. Just remember that in the capitol cities, each city gets two elemental types only, so you'll want to go to both if you want to get 'tripping the rifts' from the cities - but you can get it by just closing the rifts in the rest of the world - which is much easier, as the city invasion ones are very strong 80 elites - not really soloable except by extremely well geared people, and even then it's probably hard...

Yeah, they're not spawning elemental elites in Ironforge on Lightbringer-US either. I think Garrosh is having the same problem cause a friend was trying for the achievement by using the cities. I sent a ticket in about the elementals and the first response was a mail about how my chat was messed up by Gearscore. I don't even use the thing. A little off there, customer service.

If you still need earth and fire, here are two locations. Head to Sentinel Hill in Westfall, wait until the fire elementals spawn and wipe them out. Then fly immediately to Lakeshire in Redridge, and if luck is with you, the earth elementals in the town will still be up and then you can go wipe them out. And that should get you the achievement.
