Official forums are now read-only

If there are any threads you loved, discussions you cherished, and anything memorable you wish to keep, it would be best to save those now. The forums are staying read-only until the end of the month, and then they are going away forever. End of an era ...
These forums will remain read-only until the end of the month, after which they and all of their posts will be removed ... forever! If you have any posts, information, stickies, etc. that you'd like to keep you'll want to have finished saving it before then.
We've all enjoyed the past few years on these forums, and look forward to creating many more with you on the new community site. See you there!

You shall not be missed.

Pity. I won't post on the new forums. After all the dust getting kicked up over RealID plans for the forums, the new community site sure likes to splash my name around. Gives me the feeling that Blizzard doesn't get it, won't ever get it, and furthermore will continue to not get it in more aggressive (read: "monitizing") ways in the future.
It should be noted that they seem to be pretty cavalier with my Cardholder Name (which is the only reason they know who I am) and that information is a part of the Cardholder Information Dataset that's required to be protected as a part of PCI DSS. Blizzard must be PCI DSS compliant (which they do claim to be) in order to continue processing credit card transactions.
It would be interesting to see if financial incentive is enough to overcome a lack of interest in our privacy.

You are the only person that sees your real name.

As far as the forums go, yes. You are correct. At this point, they haven't pursued the RealID strategy and my name isn't being included in my posts.
The problem is that Blizzard has betrayed a trust. They've included cardholder information in their social networking system (I never signed up for RealID and I sure as hell never gave it my name). They were intending to integrate RealID in to their forum software. And they're intending to integrate RealID with Facebook in some manner. Couple with the use of Battle.Net accounts in a soda marketing campaign and advertising in the forums, I have a hard time feeling confident that Blizzard isn't about to do something else that mis-uses information they've been entrusted with.
Seeing my name splashed on the front page is a warning sign that Blizzard doesn't get privacy. There is no reason for my name to be there.
I should note that Blizzard's community site meets PCI DSS where you expect it - your Account screen. Hit your account section and you'll be within an encrypted channel (HTTPS). But everywhere else, your name - part of your cardholder data set - is being transmitted in the clear.

As much as I like the new forums, I'm gonna miss some of the wonderful posts on the old ones. Alamo, Skinning a bear should aggro every bears, and most of all, Kralnor, all lost in time.

Aw jeez. I'm making Blade Runner references without even meaning to. That's what happens when it's a prescribed text for English class.

The historian in me always winces a little when an archive is destroyed (or at least disappears from public access). Why does Blizzard hate future pop-culture history graduate students?

What about the beta forums? Are they moving there too, and how do we access them?
Cephas Nov 19th 2010 12:01AM
Beta forums are (and have always been) totally separate from the live forums. They can still be accessed where they have always been: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?forumId=7555625

And on its own site. http://www.thelittlestmurloc.com/
All the chapters are there, and the creator has stated he intends to make another story at some point and post it there as well.

I was sad that they'd be deleting "You awaken in Razor Thorn Hill" but I found it already archived on another website. Yay! For those that want it: http://forums.wowlite.net/thread.php?id=20677329926&pageNo=1&forumID=
It is also archived on the author's website but it deletes all the other talk and the feel of it. I will certainly miss a lot of threads.....

I saw the new ones referred to as "Pee on poop".
Pretty accurate.
