This is the full version of Melvenor's entry into the BlizzCon 2010 machinima contest. Home, Sweet Andorhal takes place some time after the fall of the Lich King, when both the humans and the Forsaken seek to return to Western Plaguelands. In Melvenor's interpretation, the Forsaken arrive just a little bit sooner.
This video is absolutely amazing to watch and highlights Melvenor's commitment to storytelling. Check out the YouTube page for full credits; Melvenor got together quite a team to work with him on this video. In the spirit of the movie: Adieu, and may the Dark Lady watch over you. When I think of the Forsaken, this is kind of how I think of them. But then I have to wonder whether those past selves shown in the movie would really want to live such a damned existence, a mockery of what they once had. Zombies don't reproduce, but the living do. If the immortal undead "take back what is theirs" then soon there will be nowhere left for the living. Would you want your wife or your husband to linger on that way? Your parents? Your children? Not if you had any compassion, you wouldn't.
Several other things stuck out: The way the living were portrayed as evil, calling the undead a "maggot" - yes, because I converse with zombies while killing them. Also, the generic SW guard soldiers in the film had never met a rogue or hunter before. Finally, "Oh look at us we're so vibrant and remember when we were living" followed by "Dark lady watch over us!" while showing the churning plague wagon in the shot. Yeah I totally want to get behind their cause now.... not.
Fight for life - put the undead out of their misery. We've met enough thankful ghosts in Azeroth to know that there's something better waiting for them on the other side of death. Example: http://thottbot.com/c522
I'm sorry for the off-topic, but you guys seriously need to do a feature on how the official WoW Forums is full of condescending assholes. I am seriously impressed by attitude from the people there. Nearly everyone answers any sort of suggestion you make with "Go play GuildWars, Lord of the Rings Online or D&D online and quit your QQ." or shit like that.
Why did I get downvoted? I'm thinking a feature would be nice and would actually teach most assholes some manner. I'm not saying all WoW players are assholes, heck, I'm one of them and I know other really nice people in-game. But it's really hard to get in a random BG or post in the official forums and not having loads of people being assholes just for the sake of looking "cool".
You added nothing to the discussion of the featured video or the column. Your approach to making a suggestion was more of a foul mouth rant then anything.
You are suggesting they write about a topic that has been covered in TWO different columns recently.
The people you are complaining about are forum trolls. Why give them any more spotlight? If you dislike something you see on the forums report it. Give the trolls enough rope and they will hang themselves. ;-)
Yeah, I don't get it, either. The Forsaken are evil, and have pretty much the exact same goals as the Scourge that they're so proud they broke free from. Yet so many people try find some way to sympathize with them by tying them to their HUMAN lives from before they were turned undead.
You know what sort of Forsaken story I'd like to see? A story about how they justify their different worldview from when they used to be humans. Why do they suddenly want to exterminate everyone else? If I'm to care about the Forsaken at all, show me how they're different from the Scourge outside of not obeying the Lich King.
Perhaps a bit of empathy might help you understand why those that like the Forsaken are so fully behind them.
They didn't ask to be raised and now, they want what they had before their death to remain theirs in undeath. The people of Stratholme and Lordaeron are still the people of Stratholme and Lordaeron. It does not belong to breathers anymore so trying to come up from the areas that were not destroyed by the plague are interlopers and claiming for free, something that belongs to those who never left on the basis that "Because I breathe, I have more right to this land."
The forsaken have the strongest will of any race in the game. They keep moving out of sheer desire to exist.
They were allowed into the horde in their hour of desperation and they worked to overcome the Lich King the same as anyone else. The horde calls on them to defend territory and expand, they do just that.
Better to be Forsaken than to be a xenophobic nelf or human (I'm including you, wolfmen). Gnomes are fine (with brown sauce) and we might not mind the Dranei if the would stop cauterizing us with that holy light. I have nothing against dwarves, I'm over the ground, they are under it.
Never mind the fact that Sylvanus is being blatantly evil, disobeys Garroshs' instructions to not use the plague and threatens people with being scourged if they don't do what she wants.
I really can't empathize with them in machinimas. Forsaken are great in lore and has a very nice story to them, but in machinimas I think they've gotten too much of that typical "badass" status and it's starting to get somewhat annoying how extremely better than any other race they are and how they slaughter every single one without a scratch and so on.
I never see a badass murder gnome other than in Byron the Tauren Rogue, and that was a comedy story. Are gnomes really that hard to take serious?
@ quasarsglow - Empathy is precisely the problem though. It seems like theirs vanishes the second they bow their knee to Sylvanas. The story has been told over and over again about how they realize they feel nothing for their former lives.
That is not all due to rejection by the larger living world. If that were true there wouldn't be those free undead who have rejected Sylvanas' ideals (or lack thereof).
I have nothing but admiration for free undead who have risen to something higher, such as Leonid, Merely or even that magnificent bastard Finklestein.
It is the Forsaken's inability to have an ounce of empathy for the human beings who were JUST LIKE THEM before they died that makes the Forsaken story very hard for me to resonate with.
I agree that the story that makes SENSE of their new mindset has not yet been told. That I have seen anyhoo.
All that being said, Melvanor is awesome, this movie is awesome and ... yeah - awesome! ;D

Agreed! I despise the Forsaken, but it was still great. Keep setting that bar high, Mel.

The production value on this series is simply stunning.

You got down-voted because you're off topic.

I think it's because it's completely off topic. I don't dissagree with your statement but this is a machinima post.
/shrug. :)

You got downvoted because half of the pricks from the WoW forum also lurk here.

I don't post to the official forums. You're just off-topic. Go away.

Perfect example of the core Forsaken mindset:
Sorrow, Anger, Envy and Anxiety.
Again, Melvenor surprises me as one of the best story-machinima makers out there, and a fantastic avid role-player.
perderedeus Nov 18th 2010 12:27PM
The cinematography is excellent. What really stands out for me, however, is the voice acting - well done.
You should have a chapter for the Sunwalkers, or the Tauren people in general. The loss of Cairne (and his method of departure) was a tragedy, indeed.
Natsumi Nov 18th 2010 12:36PM
The only Tauren I want to hear about is the one served at McVarian's Burger Hut. :D

I hate to be a heartbreaker, and, although I think the movie itself is very good, I have to ask - what's up with all the Forsaken love? I know it's just my opinion, but it's a race I despise. I just find that they are the typical badass cliché and that their power is going through the roof as Blizzard seems to love them a lot. I just don't like the race and I don't get it why everyone thinks it's cool to think that pieces of bones who were once human have to hate everyone on the world and go /emo just because they're dead. Just doesn't make any sense, but as I said, it's just my opinion...
Also, yeah, screw Sylvanas, I hate her too. :|
