All the World's a Stage: 4.0 roleplay addons

While World of Warcraft has plenty of extra gadgets and widgets for PvE or PvP players, there's little in the way of any kind of RP utility with the existing user interface. It was requested at BlizzCon this year that some sort of RP description tool be added to the existing UI, but if Blizzard does decide to do something like this, it's likely to be pretty far in the future. Thankfully, until that time does occur, roleplayers have loads of addons to choose from that can help them out.
Patch 4.0 broke a lot of existing addons for PvE and PvP gameplay, but most of the RP addons seem to have made the transition without too much hassle. While I can't go over every addon under the sun, I'm going to touch on a few of my favorite different RP addons that a good chunk of the RP population uses -- how they work, what they're for, and why you should have them.

One of the problems roleplayers run into is that there's no easy way to identify another roleplayer. Unfortunately, while RP servers do have an RP population, they also have their fair share of players looking for PvE or PvP who have no interest in roleplay at all. Fortunately, these addons have been developed for identifying roleplayers at one quick glance by allowing you to type up your own character's roleplay description and allowing you to see other player's descriptions, as well.
There are several different addons that do what MyRolePlay and FlagRSP2 do, but these two are the ones I hear about the most. I use MyRolePlay, but I used to use FlagRSP back in the day. The way these addons work is pretty simple. You just open up the interface and type in a physical description of your character complete with titles, surnames -- whatever you'd like, really. Once that information is saved, anyone with the addon can see your description by mousing over your character's name, targeting you, or simply using a hotkey. Other players who are using the addon will pop up in your tooltip as being flagged for roleplay, so you know who's around to RP and who isn't.

MyRolePlay has also undergone some changes, and I tend to like them a bit better. Rather than having to open up your main menu, you can simply go to your character pane, and you'll see a new tab next to currency labeled "MyRolePlay." Highlighting the titles of the different areas will give you instructions as to what goes in what box, which is an incredibly useful thing for new roleplayers to have around. There's a separate spot for physical description and history, as well as areas for your character's home, birthplace, and motto.

This is one of the more "advanced" roleplaying addons out there, but what it does to enhance the roleplay experience is nothing short of phenomenal. This addon works like MyRolePlay and FlagRSP2 -- only those with Gryphonheart Items installed will be able to see and use the items that the addon allows you to create. Say what? Create items? That's right. Gryphonheart Items lets you actually create tradeable items and objects, food, drink, quest items, and darn near everything under the sun with a few simple clicks -- or in the more advanced cases, a little coding.
Upon enabling Gryphonheart, players will find a new icon on their UI: a small blue bag. You can easily move the bag around the screen by holding shift and clicking it, so shoving it in a corner is entirely possible. The bag is the complete interface; no messing around with the interface menu is required for Gryphonheart. Simply click on the bag to open the menu, and hit "N" for new item. You can then select what level the item is going to be -- all the way up to Artifact, even -- and what kind of item it is.

In addition to creating items, Gryphonheart has one more handy feature that I use frequently: It will allow you to copy any in-game book, letter, readable quest item or piece of mail into its inventory. So if you don't feel like running all the way to the Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences in Stormwind just to read a copy of Mount Hyjal and Illidan's Gift, you can just copy it to Gryphonheart and access it from your little blue bag at any time.

There are a million and a half different addons that will log chat for you, including an option in the existing interface in game. So why use an addon, and why this addon? Personal preference, I suppose. What WOWscribe Chat Logger will do is log your chat to a file called WoWChatLog.txt in your World of Warcraft/Logs folder. What makes this addon so different? Versatility, for me. With WOWscribe, you can pick which channels you want to log and which you don't -- so you can log whispers but not emotes, /say but not /yell, /party and /party leader, or everything all at once. It doesn't matter which combination you use; you can turn them on and off at a whim.
In addition to this, this mod is extremely simple to use. Just type in "/wowscribe" to bring up a list of commands in your chat window, type in "/wowscribe status" to see what you're already logging, "/wowscribe start" to start logging, and "/wowscribe stop" to stop. There is no crazy UI for this addon; it's all text-based -- and really, doesn't that make sense in the long run for a basic chat logging addon?
Why should you use a chat logging addon? In my case, if I am working on a story based on in game RP, I like having chat logs to fall back on so I can see who exactly said what or what took place. Logs can also be handy for those who don't play often; if a player can't quite remember where he was in a moment of RP from several weeks ago, he can go back and look up where he left off.
There are lots of other addons out there designed with roleplaying in mind. These are just a few of my favorites. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any amazing roleplaying addons of your own that you'd like to spread the word about!

My favorite RP add-on, RPHelper, let you assign comments & emotes & yells to any action or spell you wanted -- and the random insult feature was just PERFECT for a drunk dwarf pally tank and her taunts! Totally fun; I had more than few PUG groups applaud and ask what in the world I was using at the end of the PUG. :) Easy to use, easy to figure out, easy to configure, wonderful UI.
It's been limping along since middle of WOTLK, and 4.0 finally killed it. Broke, abandoned by its creator, and nothing else came close.
RPHelper, I mourn you. This is an on-my-knees heartfelt plea to the RP add-on devs out there -- someone take over that addon, PLEASE, and show it some love, cleanup & updates.
(before anyone suggests SpeakNSpell, don't. I've tried it. It's distinctly user UN-friendly, and there's no apparent way to clean out the lame & occasionally offensive default sayings. If I have to go through pages of RTFM and waste an entire evening figuring out how to USE the stupid thing, forget it.)

I have to say, that's an addon I was glad to see go unsupported. It was fine for RP, but people wouldn't turn it off in instances and raids, and it gets annoying the fifth time someone yells the same thing while casting a fireball or healing the tank.
I know that for every person who misused it, there were ten who set it to not go off with every spell cast and had a randomized list of sayings... but the few who made it annoying made it so annoying that I was not unhappy to see it go away.

Check out SpeakinSpell.

Urgh, I agree with Gendou on this one. I remember a tank friend that had it set up to every single command- and the guy didn't even *actually* roleplay- he'd just transferred to a RP server with the hopes that no one would mind his totally self-centered addon use.
I played around with it myself, but it just never seemed to make any sense to me- I guess none of my characters are superheroes who announce their moves or make witting sayings during combat.

I'm reminded of a mod called Battle Cry. I loved that mod. I set the frequency low, and had a lot of random sayings, to keep it fresh.

A guildmate of mine made me a replacement for the old broken mods of this sort, called Personality. It's updated for 4.0. I don't know if he ever released it into the wild, or if it's just on his Google page, though. (He also has an Eloquence replacement called Gibberish, for those that mourn that great old mod.)

Kind of makes me wish I had a Monty Python addon that would shout random, hilarious insults.
I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!
Martinel Nov 21st 2010 8:09PM
There's one out there called Battle Cry - Downloaded it forever ago, and it still works wonderfully for the few abilities I have it keyed to.
Aruhgulah Nov 21st 2010 9:04PM
@Gendou, Ergh, etc:
The addon had a feature where it would automatically shut-off in raid or even in party. If someone was being obnoxious with it in our raids, we'd simply pause and ask the person in question to turn it off. Problem solved.
(and believe me, having my pally yell "INCOMING!!" on tossing Avenger's shield for the initial pull or entering combat was a great signaling method.)
Koleckai -- SpeakinSpell is the horrible add-on I'm referring to in my OP. I've tried it several times, and completely hate it.

@Martinel
BattleCry still works for you?! I thought they broke that in late BC/early Wrath, and hadn't seen an update in ages!
I loved that addon. I had about 15-20 different taunts that would randomly spout when I hit taunt, as well as an assortment of "Demoralizing Shouts." Nothing takes the wind out of a boss's sails quite like "Your parents never loved you!"
If it's still working, I may have to track it down again.

These are some really nice looking addons, any information on how lightweight they are, perhaps?
Ice Nov 21st 2010 7:54PM
Gryphonheart (or ghi as they say) - Medium to high. Its nothing like recount on 25man raid tho lets say that. Sometimes it goes to 10mb+ and sometimes its just under 1mb depending on people around, items you have, buffs you have and.. so forth.
Myroleplay/FlagRSP - Low to medium. Sometimes about 3mb to under 1mb. Again how many people around and how much it stores the data I would assume.
TotalRP is bit heavier than those 2 but has more features (but is also broken since last time I checked)
Chatlogger - No idea but I assume kinda heavy since it saves data all the time.

@ice WoWscribe really doesn't run that much at all. It doesn't even show up on my usage list, it's that small.
Yangli Nov 21st 2010 6:46PM
Two questions regarding FlagRSP and Myroleplay:
1) I read somewhere that I can't have both installed or else they malfunction. Is this true?
2) So Myroleplay can read out FlagRSP flags -- but does it also work the other way round?
Raventis Nov 21st 2010 7:32PM
MyRoleplay stopped reading other flags after patch 4.0. The optimal thing to do now, if you want to see everyone, is indeed to run both. I have been running MyRP along with FlagRSP Cataclysm (available only on Wowinterface, not on curse) without the game imploding on itself. The two work together. The only problem is that -sometimes- the tooltip will go blank and revert to a default one, but the descriptions and icons will still appear on the target frame.
LynMars Nov 21st 2010 7:50PM
So far as I know yes, Flag will read other RP addons like MRP, Immersion, Mary Sue, etc. We were testing this out after people were finding working RP addons post-4.0.
Kurtis Nov 21st 2010 8:07PM
@Raventis - the addon that I really miss after installing MRP is Vlud's Target Sex Mod. VTSM shows the gender of the target player, and is most useful for the holiday quest for Noblegarden where you have to put bunny ears on a female of each race. However, from a roleplay perspective it also prevents you from rolling up to that BElf or orc and saying "Old woman!" when in reality it's a 37-year-old man. Named Dennis.
Yangli Nov 21st 2010 8:31PM
Thanks for answering!
I really like FlagRSP2, but I also run FlagRSP. And I think I got the Cataclysm version via curse client -- it updated and now says Cataclysm in the addon activation menu. It has the tooltip bug you mentioned, but also sometimes fails to show descriptions (like in: I see the description, but next time I click on the player, it's gone. Really annoying).
Raventis Nov 21st 2010 9:12PM
Yep, that disappearance issue is the result of having both addons running. It's a choice of either having that disappearance issue, or only ever seeing half the people. It's really frustrating.
