No rested XP for level 80 characters at Cataclysm launch

If you're hoping to somehow get your level 80 character a rested XP boost come Cataclysm, the only way would be to log him or her out at an inn and not play him for a while once launch day comes, because rested XP is being reset with the launch of the new expansion. To quote Valnoth:
You can stop trying to come up with weird scenarios in which you will get a huge rested XP boost before Cataclysm ships. It's not going to happen. If you want rested XP, you're just going to have to rest for it.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it; nothing will be the same! Is that just for our level 80s or is that for everyone?
Skarn Nov 22nd 2010 3:42PM
That little blue post up there is all we have guys.
Quote the Raven Nov 22nd 2010 3:42PM
Yeah, this is seriously bogus if it applies to all characters. Better just be for our 80's!
MightyZombie Nov 22nd 2010 3:51PM
^This^
I pray that it doesn't apply to characters below level 80. To be denied rested XP that we've earned not because we COULDN'T gain XP, but because we've been legitimately resting, would be like logging in one day and finding that Blizzard had taken away half of your gold as part of an "economic stabilization" patch.
If I remember correctly, when Burning Crusade and Wrath launched, max-level charatcers received no rested XP, but lower-level characters retained the rested XP they had accrued, so I don't see why they would lose it this time, but Valnoth's post certainly seemed to indicate that they would.

When Wrath launched, you still had whatever rest you had leftover at the time you reached level 70. One of my characters had a bubble or two of rest to start Wrath with. Theoretically, if you had rested a character on the cusp of 70 and then turned in a quest to level, you could have started with a full level and a half of rest. Most wouldn't have any, because they had burned through it as they got near 70 and pushed to reach the cap.
Resetting it to 0 makes more sense.

@Minos: No you didn't rest was reset then, as was the BC launch. If you had "a bubble" of rested, it was probably from not playing for 8 hours after the midnight release. Rested xp was reset, but that doesn't mean it was turned off entirely.

what?

Being honest here: If it applies only to level 80 characters, then I'm going to get my mage only a few experience short of 80 and wait until Dec 7th to ding.
Chris Nov 23rd 2010 1:27AM
My hope exactly: i don't care if 80 loses it (not that we had any to begin with...being max level) but I have several low level alts that I've been holding back on leveling until the new 1-60 content was released. This would be really stupid if they reset it for other levels.
Eccentrica Nov 22nd 2010 3:39PM
Does this apply to current level 80s only, or does rested reset on all of our characters?
Parker Nov 22nd 2010 3:39PM
Same thing. Same question. Just 80s?
arixian Nov 22nd 2010 3:39PM
This just means that the Goblin and Worgen starting areas will be that much more swamped with people than they were already going to be. Maybe the best plan is just wait a few days before buying Cataclysm. That way my 80's won't have anything to do anyway.
johnthediver Nov 22nd 2010 3:40PM
Same as with BC and Wrath. Not sure why people thought they would be rested to start Cata.
Whatever.... Nov 22nd 2010 3:43PM
I thought they did do that at least for BC. I could have sworn my 60 had 150% rest built up. Don't remember for Wrath. Could be wrong.
Drakkenfyre Nov 22nd 2010 4:04PM
They didn't reset for Wrath of the Lich King. I had three bars of rest when it came out.
icepyro Nov 22nd 2010 5:53PM
Stopping the accrual of rested xp at level cap is different than resetting. I tended to rest until full around level 77 and with proper questing this resulted in still having plenty of rest when I hit 80. According to the past rules, this means I should have about 1/3 of a level of rested when I log in. According to this I will have nothing. Not that it matters to me much, but still.
It is also unclear if this is everyone or just level 80. It simply says "rested experience will be reset" which suggests my leveling toons will lose their rested also.
Then again, I wasn't here for BC/Wrath launch so I don't have first hand experience, only hearsay.
Utakata Nov 22nd 2010 6:01PM
Correct, johnthediver. I'm not sure why they even bothered to announce it...since from the posts above me, it's seems to have created more confusion than settling it.
...unless something else is going on.
StoNe Nov 22nd 2010 8:59PM
...because some people don't use common sense.
How many posts did Blizz have to state what was and wasn't included in the 4.0.3a patch. Personally it all made sense months ago when they first mentioned it. I saw random comments in general chat a week ago asking "Has the world changed yet?" and "Lol...I'll lvl my Goblin tomorrow"
Most people are not that bright ;)

If memory serves, you won't gain rested XP until you log into that character again after launch (similar to starting a new character).
So if you're going to leave your alt pally at an in to gain rested XP while you level your main you should log into it on the first day just for a bit to kick start rested XP or you may log in 2 weeks later to find no rested XP.
