Patch 4.0.3a: What's in The Shattering, what's not

With Patch 4.0.3a, The Shattering, just around the corner, people are unsure exactly what this means. Will goblins and worgen be available? Will we be able to fly in Azeroth? Will we be able to do anything with the new race/class combinations? Fear not -- WoW Insider has a list of what you can expect to see in the upcoming patch and what won't be found till Dec. 7 and Cataclysm's launch.
What's in The Shattering
What's in The Shattering
- Hearthstone set to Dalaran? Better change that -- Dalaran and Shattrath portals will be removed once the patch hits.
- In place of the handy portals in Dalaran, you'll find a series of equally handy class trainers.
- The new race/class combinations will be playable, with the exception of goblins and worgen.
- If you're wondering why we spent all that time taking back Echo Isles and Gnomeregan, you'll be able to see the fruits of your labors in 4.0.3a, where both the trolls and the gnomes have their brand new starting zones.
- Speaking of zone changes, all level 1 to 60 zones will be forever changed, and as a result, all zones will have fully playable content.
- Fancy new Cataclysm loading screens will be available for all new zones. Be sure to check out the new Northrend loading screen, while you're at it.
- Did you like the new Cataclysm cinematic? Good, because it'll be viewable as of Patch 4.0.3.
- How long have you had your in-game music muted? Now would be a good time to crank it up again, as the new Cataclysm music for all new zones will be implemented.
- The new Cataclysm login screen featuring Deathwing in all his glory above a fiery version of Stormwind will also be available.
- Just in case you haven't gotten exalted with all your home factions, City Quartermasters will be available, along with reputation tabards for each faction.
- A host of bug fixes will be included with this patch.
- New class balancing mechanics and fixes will be included, as well.
- Speaking of classes, if you are a druid, priest, paladin, or shaman, your talent trees will be reset.
- The amount of experience required to gain levels from 71 through 80 will be reduced by 20 percent. Now's a good time to get the rest of those alts to 80!
- New tamable hunter pets, including monkeys, foxes, dogs, and beetles, will be included, as well as new skins for existing pet classes.
What's not in yet
- Want to create a goblin or worgen? You'll have to wait until Dec. 7 for that.
- The worgen and goblin starting zones will not be included until you upgrade to the expansion.
- The new archaeology profession will not be released until Cataclysm's launch.
- You will not be able to level your professions to the next rank (Illustrious Grand Master) until Cataclysm's launch.
- Guild leveling will not be introduced until the expansion's release.
- Similarly, Guild Achievements will not be available until Dec. 7.
- Want to fly in old-world Azeroth? You're going to have to wait until the official release for that one. The Flight Master's License is only available to those who have purchased Cataclysm.
- All new level 80+ zones, including Hyjal, Vash'jir, Uldum, and the Twilight Highlands will not be available for play until Cataclysm's release.

My Draenai pally will miss his horse. It was a faithful steed and the journey was long to get it. I wish there was a way to keep it rather than that stupid elek.

I just can't wait. I made sure to park my main in Orgrimmar. Don't want to get stuck in Dalaran, that's for sure!
CavalierX Nov 23rd 2010 10:32AM
Why does everyone keep saying they'll be "stuck" in Dalaran if they left their toons there? Is the flight master disappearing? Is flying in Northrend no longer allowed? The only change, it seems to me, is that Dalaran will just become another -- albeit floating -- city. You can fly from there to any of the docks that connect to the main cities.
agx75 Nov 23rd 2010 10:52AM
Unless you're a low level character who got a port to Dal for the convenience.
Saikoujin Nov 23rd 2010 10:54AM
@CavalierX
You're making the assumption that every toon with their hearth set to Dalaran is level 80 and has Cold Weather Flying. A lot of people have their low level alts parked there, and the portals made it very convenient for travel and questing. Without the portals, low level toons can't very well fly the coup, and they sure as heck can't travel by land to the docks unless they want to be mob bait. So the options are either catch a ride on a rocket, or pay a mage, and that's assuming either of the two options are available for service. So in a way, they will be stuck.
Res Nov 23rd 2010 10:58AM
Exactly, I can't figure out what the big deal is. Especially considering that trainers and AH will be there now.
Tbah Nov 23rd 2010 11:33AM
Actually, if you talk to the flight master, he'll have one or two routes ready for you. It's like with Shattrath, you have the connetction to the portal at first zonein.
So no, you won't be stuck in Dalaran, just talk to your friendly flightmaster. Or mage.

Iiiiih! *excited* :D
I do wonder if some zones will feel weird; particularly Aszhara and Silverpine where respectively the goblin and worgen story get their second parts while people haven't been able to play the first parts yet. Timewarp!

Damn! Seriously resetting talents again for druids and paladins?
(wanders off muttering)..........
Varda Nov 26th 2010 3:09AM
Yah, Druids, Paladins and Shaman. Three out of my five characters! Wonderful. The pain, the pain.
Fortunately my dual spec Lock and Mage were spared.
BTW, if you are purchasing your 310 flying and are exalted with all factions make SURE you go to a riding trainer in a city you are exalted with and not Dalaran or it'll cost more.
Gossamer Nov 23rd 2010 9:07AM
Hopefully everyone already reset their hearthstones. :D I'm not certain if I'll log in to find my character hearthed or not, so I parked her on the Stonewrought Dam, and I set my hearthstone to Auberdine. Will where that hearth me to since that gets wiped out...? I don't know! It's so exciting!
Gossamer Nov 23rd 2010 9:09AM
Doh! Where will*. I guess I was *too* excited. >.
kv83 Nov 23rd 2010 9:30AM
You're not HS'ed. You are moved to the nearest graveyard no matter where you are on the world map.
cj Nov 23rd 2010 9:33AM
Somewhere I read it puts you at the closest grave yard.
Astemus Nov 23rd 2010 9:43AM
When wrath launched, I tried to hitch a ride on naxx, but only ended up making my character unavailable until a GM moved me.
I hope your experiment goes better than mine did!

"Hearthstone set to Dalaran? Better change that -- Dalaran and Shattrath portals will be removed once the patch hits."
Since the realms are currently down and the patch is presumably being implemented as we speak, I think it may be too late to "change that." Thankfully I relocated my toons last night. ;-)
Cope Nov 23rd 2010 9:09AM
I'm Shattering my pants with excitement.
Gossamer Nov 23rd 2010 9:10AM
*snort, snicker, childish giggle* Okay, I'm taking that one to work with me.
Mugutu Nov 23rd 2010 9:11AM
Unfortunately it seems that the major sound issues I and many others have been experiencing haven't been fixed - it still sounds like someone is scraping metal behind low-quality versions of the old music.
Of course, this is just from the new title screen, but it's obvious that the problem is persisting.
