Patch 4.0.3a: DPS meta gem requirements being reverted

Happily, Blizzard has announced that it's changing back to the old requirements in a future patch.
The current design has been reconsidered, so we're planning to revert gems that now require more blue than red gems back to their original requirements. Such a change can't be accomplished via a hotfix though, so we'll have to wait to revert these in a future patch.

Well this is VERY good news to start off the day. That requirement was STUPID in the first place!! I have no idea what they were thinking when they made that change, just glad they realized the error of their ways and set them back (even if it is in a future patch)
Thanks Blizzard Happy 6th Anniversary!! (Yes I know it was yesterday)

WTB Remove Post button. Stupid lag!

I can't understand what they were thinking especially as the Cata class changes were supposed to allow players to make the decisions, not be forced by heavy handed design into a particular choice.
If they don't like people stacking +damage gems they should just remove them and only leave the hybrid gems and then we get to decide what type of hybrid we want.
But worrying about red gems this early in an expansion is stupid anyway as people will be gemming for hit/expertise etc for at least the first raid tier.

Red gems are simple, the choices come in the colours. They were trying to push people to use those colours more at level 85. They probably had to change the restrictions on the existing metas to prevent them from being the optimal choice at 85.
It was a "stupid idea", but it doesn't fit very well with socket bonuses and hybrid gems, and the fact that blues just aren't that interesting. So they reversed it.
Hopefully the increased socket bonus value and new worth of blue gems (hit) will make gemming more interesting than "all red and stick a nightmare tear in the slot that nets the biggest socket bonus".

I don't usually play an endgame DPSer, but I have to ask: What the hell were they smoking when they came up with that idea in the first place?
Thiron Nov 24th 2010 6:14AM
Augh, what the hell am I supposed to use as meta meanwhile?
Well, as BM hunter I don't suffer as much as others though. Gotta switch to Destructive Skyflare I guess, it has more crit than others
pikadude Nov 24th 2010 6:20AM
Thundering Skyflare. Averages out to something like 64 haste rating.
Elmo Nov 24th 2010 6:20AM
As a shaman this is almost impossible to pull off (esp at 80) or I'll end up with like 800 hit only to get 3% critm thats obviously a lot of AP lost far more than 3%
Angus Nov 24th 2010 8:24AM
Enhance was one of the few specs that wasn't that ba off. Until 17% hit is reached, it is THE best stat. In cat 800 hit rating would be okay.
Elemental would not want it tho. And considering just how much element crits, it would be bad.

LOL can I have my 2K I spent gemming and reforging back.
Viciouswolfy Nov 24th 2010 10:46AM
2k on gear that is going to be replaced in like a week and a half? Why?
Noyou Nov 24th 2010 11:36AM
@Wolfy
Shhh! let them spend :)
Spellotape Nov 24th 2010 2:25PM
It might have been more prudent to simply change meta gems ...
Seedcake Nov 24th 2010 9:40AM
Thank god.

Personally, I think I can survive. They'll get the fix in before the heavy raiding starts.
Boom Nov 24th 2010 8:30AM
Having three 80's that use these metas in varying forms (boomkin, hunter, rogue) I found the only one that was impossible to regem was the hunter. Needing only 7% hit (spacegoat) and already sitting at 10.something% after reforging, there were no viable green gems that would satisfy the requirement for the meta. Purple gems don't work since they all count as red as well. Giving up 100-200 agility (depending on what I would have replaced my Delicate's with) means giving up 200-400 DPS. Ended up throwing on a Thundering so I could at least be relatively raid ready for our heroic run tonight.
Couvs Nov 24th 2010 9:15AM
this is a kick in the teeth to the rogues as well with Agility being our primary stat. I'd also be giving up enough agility to kill my damage output :\
Socialcockroach Nov 24th 2010 9:48AM
Actually, I think it would be sort of cool if they kept it this way, but instead upped the potencey of the meta its self significantly. That way you make a choice; do I want to have more steady dps or do I want to focus more on my crit damage output? I personally feel choices like that make the game more interesting.
Alexa Nov 24th 2010 10:48AM
Agreed. There's nothing wrong with giving people additional choice on what gems to use. Ultimately, EJ or another site would come up with the ultimate choice to maximize DPS... but giving people more room for experimentation is definitely a good thing in my book. :)
