Enchanting Vellum now available from enchanting vendors

If you remember, these vellums used to be made with different types of inks, based on how high level the enchant you wanted to put on them was. There were also weapon and armor vellums. Now, the system has been simplified so that a single vellum can accept any enchant; it is made from Moonglow Ink, which is one of the inks you can make by milling the incredibly cheap starter zone herbs.
Blizzard typically doesn't take something that's craftable and move it to an NPC vendor; however, it sometimes does this to ensure availability of the product, as well as introduce another outlet (or sink) for gold. We have seen a few exceptions to this trend of late, and I suspect it's because the game designers are valuing the general availability of products like Dust of Disappearance and these vellum more than they value the player-driven market of these items. If it makes more of their customers enjoy the game more, then it's a good design decision.
That said, Blizzard typically prices these items in such a way that it's still possible for players to make them for a profit. People are used to paying gold for vellum; however, that price was based on needing Ink of the Sea for them. I know that on my realm, prices didn't go down that drastically after the change, but assuming an average value of 3g for stack of low-level herbs, your Moonglow Inks are going to cost 60 silver each. This means that there's no room for players in this market, except for buying the vellum off the vendor and listing it on the AH.

And right after I leveled my enchanting skill buying vellums at 5g a pop.

Well, I think that's the point. Blizzard is fond of taking gold out of players' hands, but not so keen to put it in other players' hands.
I have a feeling that portals in Dalaran and Shattrath *may* come back, simply because there's no in-game competition now. Almost every other profession has some kind of in-game alternative - armor, weapons, potions, and gems can be crafted, but that's not the only way to get those items (vendors, drops, quest rewards, etc.) Even enchanting has competition from vendored head-slot enchants.
By removing free mass-transit, they've effectively created a market for it. It will be interesting to see how it will play out. Basil ~ isn't this the point where we would talk about the opportunity cost of leveling a mage, and the potential profit of of a new market with no in-game competition?
Necromann, sorry you spent so much gold to level a different profession, but at least next time it won't be so bad?

You'll never, ever make back selling ports the time you spent leveling a mage to get them. Even with an 80 mage, I can think of far more profitable things to be doing than selling ports.

1) Go to vendor.
2) Buy stack.
3) Post on ah
4) ???
5) Profit!

While I agree to a certain extent, there has been a mage on my server who has been hanging around in trade selling ports for 15g. Assuming he gets at least one per minute (which he easily gets, I've used his taxi service before), that's 900g/hour. I think there are more profitable ways to go (and more fun and interesting to be frank), but it is a legitimate way to raise a lot of gold.
Also, I don't think blizzard will put portals back in. They are more likely to remove portal spells from mages' spellbooks.

I don't have any scribe characters- but this change leads me to ask what exactly they do for gold now. Glyphs used to be reasonably profitable, and I know I kept the scribes of my realm busy making Vellum so I could sell overpriced enchants, but it seems now they don't really have a niche...
Hob Nov 25th 2010 6:56PM
Inscription could become the next Engineering ~ mostly "useful" for the scribe, with the occasional crafted product placed on the auction house.
First sign of death: you have to choose between "blood elf" or "night elf" inscription.
Second sign of death: the game designers call it "fun" and "creative".
Third sign of death: "silly" products, like x-ray glasses... er, I mean "comic books."
Time of death: they let you make scribe-only mounts.
Seriously though, in the PvP Arena that is the auction house, not every profession is going to be balanced, nor will it even be competitive.
Never too late to switch to alchemy...

Darkmoon cards?
Or perhaps Blizz will kill two birds with one stone (mages having monopoly on portals) and allow scribes to craft teleportation scrolls :P
Redem Nov 25th 2010 7:25PM
Selling glyphs, off hand items, relics, DMF trinkets, and potentially dust of disappearance.
Please, feel free to assume there's no money to be made. Just leaves more for me and anyone else who's able to do math.
Know Nov 25th 2010 7:14PM
You forgot the third sign: Inscription bonuses are not usable in Arena and will not be usable in rated BG's.
Eregos ftw! Nov 25th 2010 7:24PM
Darkmoon cards, relics, forged documents, offhands, milling, and glyphs still sell decently.
squig_masta Nov 25th 2010 7:32PM
I wonder what would be an inscription only mount. A lifesize oragimi Gryphon? I know I can't speak for all scribes, but I might be willing to make that trade. Just gotta be carefull not to fly to close to the water.
Hal Nov 26th 2010 12:01AM
Forged documents?
Kraug Nov 25th 2010 8:27PM
/shrug
I still make at least 5k a day selling glyhs.
Oriflame Nov 25th 2010 10:21PM
selling glyphs is still the highest volume money maker of any profession - even though the mats are triple and the are single use only. I make a lot of money on other professions, but inscription is easily the best one for me to make the most at (with JC being a close second).
Now, engineering... let me tell you about that!
Redem Nov 25th 2010 10:27PM
Agreed. Engineering is the only profession that truly needs some love. Scribe/Engineer on my main. Love 'em both, for different reasons.
Siln Nov 25th 2010 6:36PM
Way to go Blizz.. they just really have some sort of beef against inscriptionators nowadays.
Tumleren Nov 25th 2010 7:12PM
Scribes. Please.
