Unless, you know, you care more about having fun and enjoying the different flavors the different races bring than topping the DPS meters in every instance and raid. Must everything always be about numbers in this game?

I think that statement was directed at people who seriously focus on PvP. If you're serious and want to do well in the arenas, then number matter seriously. Even hardcore raiders may look at number more seriously.
But yeah, for the rest of us who just want to enjoy the game, it's personal preference. Although I do agree with Tyler's assessment that racials are more than somewhat imbalanced.

I'm not sure I could give up shadowmeld. I'm not as good at watching my threat as I probably should be, and shadowmeld is nice for dropping threat on PvE encounters (We shouldn't need it, but it's a nice crutch to have).
