The Queue: Back to the grind

We've recharged our batteries with a nice, long holiday weekend, but now it's time to get back into the swing of things.
Jtrain asked:
I noticed that Thunder Bluff and Undercity look almost completely untouched by the Shattering. Have the devs ever stated why Orgrimmar got all the love? Are they ever planning similar makeovers for the other cities?
I don't think the developers have ever explicitly stated it, but Orgrimmar and Stormwind are the capitals of their respective factions. In Cataclysm, the expectation is that Orgrimmar and Stormwind are going to be the center of Horde and Alliance culture. The other cities are cool and you can use them, but when it's time to really get down to business, Orgrimmar and Stormwind are the places to be. They put their design resources into the cities they want you to use.
It's not just Thunder Bluff and Undercity that were neglected. It was every city but Orgrimmar and Stormwind. Darnassus had a few small changes, but that was only because they had to hide the worgen away somewhere, so Blizzard gave them a tree to sleep in.
Nobody is ever going to go visit the worgen out there after they've gotten their Gilneas tabard. Ever.
Rhyme asked:
Please tell us which new classic zones are the best to do while we wait for Cataclysm!
I haven't done all of them, so I can't do a breakdown of what's best on every continent. Here are a few notes from me, though:
- Skip Arathi Highlands. There is nothing worth seeing there and you don't lose out on anything by skipping it. I don't think it's included in the leveling curve at all. If you're an Alliance player questing in northern Eastern Kingdoms, you can go from Wetlands to Hinterlands with no issues at all. You just have to run straight up the middle of Arathi from one zone to the other.
- Alliance players, the Western Plaguelands are incredibly depressing for you. If you thought losing territory off-screen was demoralizing in this expansion, have fun losing even more of it on-screen!
- Eastern Plaguelands, however, is fantastic. Really. Everybody must do this zone. I wish I knew which designers at Blizzard were responsible for this zone so I could shake their hands, because it's fantastic.
- Horde players, roll a Forsaken character. Do Tirisfal, Silverpine and Hillsbrad in the proper order. The Forsaken are dag nasty.
Illidius asked:
Exactly how much time has elapsed between the Shattering and now? A few days? Weeks? Years? It seems unlikely that all of the bases and reconstruction have taken place within a few days.
We will probably never know the answer to this question. Some of the changes in The Shattering were a direct result of the Cataclysm, yes. However, some of them were changes that were already in progress during Wrath of the Lich King or were building since vanilla WoW. Not every change in patch 4.0.3a was a result of the Shattering, so a straight "it's been six months" sort of answer probably isn't even possible.
Avan asked:
Is it just me, or does every major character/raid boss in WoW sound like Thrall? Ragnaros, Nefarion, Deathwing, Algalon, Deathbringer Saurfang, Varian, Garrosh, Hakkar, Mr. Smite, the list just goes on and on. And on and on and on and on. And. On.
That's because Chris Metzen voices pretty much every major character/raid boss in WoW. I don't know if he's done all of those that you listed, but I know that he has done Thrall, Ragnaros, Nefarian, Algalon and many others. My ears tell me he has done Varian as well, but I can't say that for a fact.
Next expansion, Jaina Proudmoore is going to have a deep, gravelly voice. I'm sure of it.

You would indeed be right. Metzen voices Varian too
Nawaf Nov 29th 2010 11:28AM
and Saurfang the younger

Jaina cries too damn much for someone like Metzen to voice her.

"I can't come in today, I got a cold ... smmrppnngg, smrrrppng!"
"Excellent! You can do the Worgen sounds!"
"bu ... smmrppnngg, smrrrppng!"
"Hey. We're Activision these days, dude. No More Character."
"Okay ... "

Apparently the rest of Blizzard's employees are mute and unable to lend vocal talent to its extensive cast of characters.
It's gotten a bit out of hand lately: Even Seth MacFarlane knows he cannot do EVERY voice on Family Guy. Not that a lot of the current voices aren't great, but take some of that race and faction change revenue and hire some professional voiceover work already.
Besides, Peter Cullen can't live off Transformers work forever.

Interesting fact: Metzen DID NOT do Deathwing. Shocked? Me too. I thought it was him for sure but they specifically addressed this topic at Blizzcon.

Why do I have the strangest sensation that everytime they try to bring in a new voice artist, the following conversation occurs?
Blizzard: Hey, Chris! Great work on the voices, but, um, we decided to bring in some fresh blood to voice the new Anduin-
Metzen: Oh really? Alright guys....Look at your artist. Now back to me. Back to him. Now BACK to me! Sadly, he isn't me. But he could SOUND like me, if he drank gin and Mountain Dew mixed with the tears of trolls and QQers.
Blizzard: But we-
Metzen: Look down, back up! I'm in Deathwing's Lair, sounding like the man your voice artist could sound like! What's in your hand? Back to me. I have it! It's a rare drop, holding that "thing" you've always farmed for! Look again! The item is now over 12 million subscribers! Anything is possible when your voice actor sounds like me!
I'm on a moose...
Blizzard:....Well, can't fault his logic there. Sorry Keith David's, you're out.

Did Metzen do Brann? Because Brann seems like a dev went into the Activision cafeteria and asked, "Who can do a scottish accent?" Some random person sheepishly raised their hand, and the rest is history.

@ Mcdreamy
The current Brann is soooooooo much better than the original Brann...

Actually, Algalon was voiced by Kyle Hebert. http://www.kylehebert.com/?page_id=153 down the list under "video games". Also voiced a random Male BElf.

I understand that the voice acting is probably a lot of fun for Metzen, but it does sound very amateurish. I think that this was even more apparent when the Cataclysm sound files started leaking out of the beta on to youtube and mmo.
I like that Blizzard is adding more scripted events, but someone needs to have an intervention with Chris and insist on hiring some professional voice actors. Is the issue game breaking? No. However, I expect a higher level of polish in WoW and Metzen's voice acting doesn't live up to that expectation.

@Boydboyd
"Jaina cries too damn much for someone like Metzen to voice her."
That's exactly why I'd cheer if he took over her voice acting. She's too damned whiney in her current iteration.
"Jaina, why are you crying?"
"I'm not crying. I didn't want these entrails and blood to crust on my staff, so I'm producing lubricant to clean it."
"... You sure it's not 'cause you're proud of your ki--"
"NO. ENTRAILS AND BLOOD."

What's the deal with the lack of anniversary pet and any cool item at all from the world event of Cataclysm like tabard or ghost pet that follows us around saying, "I WAS THERE MAN. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW"
Afrigginhobbit Nov 29th 2010 11:17AM
They dont like us anymore =(
Bumblebee Nov 29th 2010 11:40AM
Yes, it is a real serious issue we aren't getting more free stuff. Blizzard is ruining the game by not giving us even more vanity pets for no effort at all.
Jack Miles Nov 29th 2010 11:41AM
No one wants to be proud of being there in Wrath.
Saeadame Nov 29th 2010 11:48AM
@Bumblebee - I agree with you comment, only without the implied sarcasm =P.
jies Nov 29th 2010 12:28PM
because changing the world wasnt a big enough aniversary present?
cygnus Nov 29th 2010 1:21PM
Yeah, my toon lost his house and family during the shattering, happy aniversary! yay...
Al Nov 29th 2010 1:48PM
They probably hope it'll force us to buy the latest round of Store pets.
Given past form, I'm surprised they didn't mail out the Onyxia pet and give us the "Happy 5th Anniversary" Feat of Strength again.
