Totem Talk: A restoration shaman's Cataclysm checklist

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement and restoration shaman. Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk: Restoration will show you how, brought to you by Joe Perez, otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and host of the BDTU: Lore edition podcast
By the time you read this, Cataclysm will be exactly one week away from release. Are you excited? I know I am! The number of people who return to the game after long breaks, especially at expansion time, can be staggering. Last week, we talked about what restoration shaman who are returning to the game for Cataclysm should expect when they load in, and we talked about ways for them to ease their transition back into the game.
This week, I would like to talk about getting ready for that big day when our level caps are raised to 85, new zones open up for us to explore, new profession recipes become available, and new dungeons and encounters are available for us to experience. So are you ready for the expansion? Are you truly prepared?

It's dangerous to go alone; here, take this ...
While leveling through content is traditionally the domain of questing, as healers, we have often relied on group questing and group play to reach our end goal. We do, however, get to take advantage of something pretty nice in the upcoming expansion. In Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard introduced the Looking for Dungeon system. Players have been able to queue up based on their chosen role in order to be assigned a random group for dungeons chosen from players among the battlegroup your server belongs to. Players get to choose between specific and random dungeons.
Traditionally, healers are lucky enough to have very short waiting times in those queues. Cataclysm will likely be no different here, and the system will still be in place. While players should continue to quest and explore the zones for quest rewards and experience, healers will undoubtedly be taking advantage of this system to earn extra experience and some pretty choice loot.
Now, whether you are playing in a group or going it alone, you should take stock of the consumables you have at the ready for your adventures. In the week before Cataclysm, the auction houses are flooded with people trying to clear their inventory to make room for new items, and you can more often than not use this to your advantage.
Flask of Pure Mojo was one of the best-used shaman flasks early in Wrath. It stayed in constant use pretty much right up until Icecrown Citadel was released. It is once again insanely useful at the beginning of the new expansion for two reasons. First of all, it adds to your spirit total by 90 and persists throughout death. Second, on most servers, it is absolutely dirt cheap. I've checked a few servers that I have alts on, and in each case, the flasks were selling for less than 10 gold a piece. My suggestion to anyone who plans on chaining dungeons at the start of Cataclysm is to stock up on these now so that you can use them until the new alchemical goodies become available on your server for a reasonable price.
Flask of the Frost Wyrm is also good for the same reasons that pure mojo is -- mainly that right about now, it is pretty darn cheap. If you plan on questing, you are going to be throwing Lightning Bolts, Chain Lightning and all manner of different shocks, and you may find it useful to have a little extra oomph behind your spell-flinging. With this flask persisting through death, it will be a little cheaper than elixirs for now. I've been finding it for less than 10g on most servers.
Getting your food together for the leveling ahead can also be quite helpful. Pickled Fangtooth and Spicy Fried Herring offer some cheap spirit buffs for early dungeoning, while Very Burnt Worg and Imperial Manta Steak offer some additional haste for leveling. Now really is the time to stock up, as everything is at bargain basement prices. Having them handy and in plentiful supply can really help make those first levels go by a little faster and help give you a little extra boost. Don't go overboard on them, because you will eventually be using the new consumables, but you can definitely use them to hit the ground running in Cataclysm.
What's the plan, Stan?
As with Wrath, you will have a choice of two starter zones. In Cataclysm, this will be either Mount Hyjal or Vashj'ir. Both zones offer unique quests, flavor and feel. Both also offer a plethora of quest gear upgrades. In my travels through the beta, I found more luck questing through Hyjal, as far as upgrades go. By the end of the zone, I had replaced my tier 10 shoulders and gotten a new weapon and off-hand and at least one trinket. That said, both zones are well worth the time to go through if you get the chance, and they offer very different but compelling stories.
Now is the time, though, to start making a plan. Decide which zone you want to start in now, and get ready. Plan on how you want to level. Do you want to jump right into dungeons and heal all the way to 85, or do you want to quest, exploring each zone fully, forsaking the dungeons until you get to level 85? The most effective way will be combining the two, but no matter what your choice is, there is no wrong way to do it.
If you can, find a buddy or several to quest and instance with. If you plan on leveling as restoration, having a group of people you can call on to help with group quests and to run dungeons with can go a long way to make your leveling experience faster and more enjoyable. It will let you play to your strength as a healer without having to worry about seriously DPSing.
Final check
With a week's time between you and the new content, make one final check through your list. Are your bags empty to accommodate the massive amounts of loot you will get? Do you have your gold set aside for old world flying? Are you up to date on your class changes and the new spells? Do you know the stats, spells and numbers at level 85? Do you have any last-minute questions that you need answered before the big day arrives? Probably the most important thing is: Are you prepared to have large amounts of fun? Get ready to explore completely new zones and enjoy the new content! If you've been waiting for it as long as I have, I know you'll have a blast. In the weeks that follow we will be going over gear from leveling in dungeons and questing, healing strategies for the various instances, and much much more.

I'm levelling a resto shaman atm, currently lvl 75, so will hit 80 round about release date. I havent yet seen any info on whether freshly dinged lvl 80 healers (specifically resto shamans) will be able to jump straight into cata dungeons?
So, forget all your ilvl 264 gear for a sec, how will a healer in blue wotlk dungeon gear fair?
Merch Nov 30th 2010 7:50PM
From limited experience in the beta, I would say u wont go well. But the early quest rewards are that good (ilvl 272 from memory) that it won't take u long to gear up and get into healing dungeons.
Talaamu@Spirestone Nov 30th 2010 9:27PM
Ya... don't even try it. Like Merch said, you would die in wotlk blues. Also, like he said, the 272 greens will gear you up quickly. Just don't try anything until you're almost completely decked out in cataclysm gear.
Saeadame Dec 1st 2010 2:11AM
I wouldn't jump into dungeons, but if you just do, say Hyjal you'll probably get enough upgrades to do dungeons from there. It's like going from Outland to WotLK, only instead of starting with UK you're starting with AN or OK (both of which would probably be really, really hard if both you and the tank, and all the DPS were in BC greens and blues).
if you want to play it safe, do both Hyjal and Vashj'ir, make sure most of your item slots have been filled with Cataclysm-level gear, and then go into dungeons.

Well i got a Restro Shaman lv80 he got 4x T9.10 gear and 1x T10.10 gear
and still got old Nax weapon / Sheild so his gear is between lvl200 - 251
... now he is my gatherer so i normaly level him pretty early is it posible to join a run on Release day and still be able to complete a dungeon run? what do you think?

I have a different perspective.
In the beta, I used my ICC gear from a char transfer (not a premade)
It was very doable - fun, challenging, but doable.
So ICC epics should be not a problem. I'm gonna queue for dungeons on one toon without the quest rewards.
(This toon was a disc priest if that makes a difference, but it shouldn't)

I am pretty sure there is a iLvl requirement for the first dungeon and that is BRC. And it is high enough to make sure you have either t10 or some of the new quest rewards in Cata. But don't quote me on that.

1) What is the first instance we can LFD for? Blackrock Caverns? Do we have to unlock it? What is its iLevel gate? Or could we LFD the instance the minute we log in on the 7th? So I suppose we should have watched the videos prior to the 7th?
2) Do you have any suggestions for "pawn" (addon) stats? I.e., trying to say decide where a piece of gear is an upgrade, it is nice to compute a simple number. I know at 85 the answer will be to read 217 pages at EJ and run simulations to model your specific gear. /sigh Anything you get leveling will hopefully be vendored well before the 14th. But at a vendor it is nice to have a quick metric; Failing that, always choose the highest iLevel of an item that has int or spirit and does not have agi/str will work fine.
(example from past)
( Pawn: v1: "HEP": SpellPower=1.00, CritRating=1.60, HasteRating=2.50, Intellect=0.90, Mp5=1.00, Stamina=0.05, MetaSocket=54, RedSocket=50, YellowSocket=50, BlueSocket=50)

@Sally Bowls
I've always found the addon EquipCompare (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info4392-EquipCompare.html) and RatingBuster (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info5819-RatingBuster.html) useful for equipment comparison and upgrades.
EquipCompare will show another window with what you currently have equipped next to whatever you're inspecting. RatingBuster will break down the stats on the Equipment and tell you the differences in easy to read formats.
Saeadame Dec 1st 2010 2:15AM
I think it will depend on your gear, for whether you can jump straight into the new dungeons or not. If you're in all Heroic ICC gear, you probably won't be replacing hardly any of your gear until Deepholm, meaning you'll could probably crack offa few dungeons in your old gear.
On the other hand, if you're in Regular ICC gear, or anything below that, you'll probably want to quest for some upgrades first.
I'm not sure what the first dungeon is, although you have to go "discover" the dungeons before you can queue for them, anyway.
zed Dec 1st 2010 4:16PM
I second the RatingBuster suggestion. I've been using it since about midway through Wrath and it makes choosing gear very simple. It'll show what percentage stats equate to (instead of "How much percentage does 87 hit rating give me?") and is fully customizable to show/hide certain stats.
I never leave Orgrimmar without it :-)
Feraley Dec 1st 2010 3:12AM
Does anyone know the amount of stats of freshly dinged 85 or stats in 359 epics? I'm just curious and want to know what to expect. Like Int=? Spi=? Haste=? Crit=?
Ice Dec 1st 2010 3:53AM
Premade T11 gear
111k health
101k mana (not a lot let me tell you that)
Healing numbers? I even made video of it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USGo8YYvSNg
Take it as you will. (Yeah I did forget ES and lots of other things there but hey..)
I really enjoyed resto healing on beta both pve and pvp(well tol barad since eu BGs werent active at all..) and I'm about to mainswap to my shaman. I cant wait!
I would also go pure dps class, but I'm gonna be honest and tell that I'm not trusting pug tank/healer that might be wrath-minded to keep my virtual life healthy on any heroic or late instances.
Also I'm off to fish for some feasts for future dungeons I'm doing with my guild.
Feraley Dec 1st 2010 5:21AM
How much haste and spell pow do you have there? I must say healing numbers are kinda lower then current with 277 gear or am I wrong...
Ice Dec 1st 2010 8:15AM
Yeah they are about same you do now..
But heres the thing.
Combat ratings wont change much from what they are now. Basically you might see double the stats but in reality at 85 its the same between "at ICC" and "at ulduar" due combat ratings and the gear having tons of stamina and not "X stat".
You will have less haste that you have now obviously, you wont be getting 50% haste stuff like you might get in ICC gear at 80. You might get 50% haste if blizzard allows that in "last raid" (ICC gear went way overboard with haste and I'm sure they dont want that again). I dont personally know how shamans were in Naxx but you might be able to compare naxx times to incoming T11 times.
For PvP standpoint..
People do about same damage as wrath in pvp and in general (12k dps in heroics..).
Yeah, 18k+ crits are there but heres the thing again, people have 120k health so it scales way better. But you cannot really overheal someones damage in most cases in pvp, thats why you need to BE with SOMEONE that kills them before you go oom or they kill you.
Prepare to have gear with tons of stamina and less actual stats that would improve dps/hps like haste, crit, intel and spirit. But it seems balanced, tanks can take more damage but it also takes longer to heal them up with spammable healing wave.
If you look at my other video of Heroic DM run you see how long it actually takes to heal tank with 170k+ health or heck at the point where group goes to 50% for standing in something, it takes aages because HW/CH heals what, 10k?
Heck, you know SFK(even on normal) boss that does aoe strangling and takes you to like 10 hp? It takes ages and burns mana to get people up from that so they wont die.
Thats why DPS preventing damage with their own stuff is important. (Like in beta coughRoguescough "oh but its dps loosss bawwww")
Overall, I liked it more than wrath healing.
You wont get too many cases of "Oh freshly dinged undergeared tank this will be f-..oh great he charges casting hea-.. oh he died..Nature swiftness! ghost wolf, im out of here liches!"
phew. Wall of text.
Oh and yeah, I didnt gem pure haste. I felt comfortable not doing that and it worked quite fine for focusing mana regen more. Most of my gems were spirit, intel or haste oriented (like intel+haste).
