The Light and How to Swing It: Prot and ret paladin addons

In recent news, yet another Sanctuary talent bug has been hotfixed. I'm really starting to get annoyed at this wonderful talent that keeps us crit-immune. This time, the issue was that it would de-talent itself for players under level 30 when they logged off, zoned, changed continents, etc. This should now be fixed, for those of you who've been leveling new tauren paladins as protection.
As far as the column this week goes, we're talking about addons. From holy power tracking to gear swapping to buff reminders (like the one shown above), there are a lot of things that can make our day-to-day dungeon running a lot easier. These aren't the only addons for each solution (and I hope our commenters will point out any good ones I missed), but they're a few of the more popular, and each has its own features and limitations.
Holy power tracking
NugComboBar This was originally for rogues and cat druid combo point tracking, but it has been expanded to handle holy power for paladins and soul shards for warlocks. It adds a simple line of circles that fill up with each combo point you have built up. It's good for moving your combo points to the middle of the screen so you can actually see them readily (instead of glancing up in the corner every time).
IceHUD If you like a more heads-up display type, you might consider IceHUD, which provides a HUD for health and mana as well as some customization of your holy power layout. You can swap it between the usual runes, a number, bars, and a couple of types of circles. I like this format, because all of the relevant info is in the center of the screen instead of tucked up in the corner.
KAHolyPower While not the most polished of addons, it is one of the more simple. If all you want to do is move your runed holy power bar from under your avatar to the middle of the screen and nothing else, then this is for you. Yeah, it provides some alternatives to choose from, but it is one of the more lightweight alternatives. You could nab MoveAnything, but sometimes you just want a plain knife and not a Swiss army knife.
Buff management
PallyPower The original, the classic, the often-maligned and cursed bane of blessing management. However, that stigma came more from the fact it was one of the only addons to fill that job well, and having very few options to fall back on, it was scorned when it didn't work "just right." Back when we had a half-dozen blessings to manage, this was a must-have for every paladin in a raid so that each paladin didn't overlap on blessing casts. With today's raid-wide blessings, the addon defaults to its secondary features: maintaining your seals and Righteous Fury (if you're prot). It will still let you assign who is casting what, but that's less of a concern in today's world of two blessings.
ZOMGBuffs I found out about this addon during a panel with Cartographer addon author ckknight. Because he played a paladin and was an addon author, I asked if he had ever thought about coding an alternative to PallyPower that would also hook into the same blessing assignment back end. His answer was (and this is paraphrased), "I don't use PallyPower. I use ZOMGBuffs by Zeksie, which already does that." When I got home from the convention, I swapped, and I have been using it to this day. It is more class-agnostic than PallyPower, so it will hook into any alts or mains of other classes you happen to run and manage buffs for them. Also, it handles the self-buffs much like PallyPower. If you play more than one class, this would probably be the better choice, as it provides buff management no matter what class you're playing.
Proc and rotation tracking
clcInfo For those of you who used to use the Retribution FCFS helper (clcRet) addon, then you might enjoy just plain clcInfo. This is from the same guy who writes clcRet, but this is the more generic version that will also work with other classes as well. For those of you who haven't played with it, the addon gives a sort of cheat sheet on what you should be hitting next in your rotation. If you're new to the spec or are just having issues figuring out how best to play with the new holy power system, then you might want to check this out.
Power Auras Classic Almost everyone loves this thing. Hunters, warriors, druids, warlocks ... heck, Blizzard liked it so much that it decided to add basic Power Auras functionality into the game for all major talent procs. What this does is provide a way to create custom visual alerts for when certain buffs, debuffs, or events happen. Prot paladins, do you need a reminder to cast Righteous Fury after rezzing? This can do it. Ret pallies, do you want something to flash on your screen when you have 3 holy power? There are settings for that. Do you want to be warned when someone hits you with Curse of Mending so you stop attacking? It can cover you there.
Debuff removal
Decursive There aren't many good, straight-up alternatives to Decursive when it comes to quick and easy debuff removal. Sure, you could create a mouseover macro for Cleanse and handle it that way, but that takes up space on your action bars. There is always the choice of an addon like Grid, VuhDo, Clique, or HealBot, but those are intended for doing healing as well and usually take up a lot of screen real estate. All in all, with the lack of magic debuff removal in both prot and ret, you probably won't have as much call for being on Cleanse duty, even in 10-man raids. Still, if you want to help out and have the mana to Cleanse in a tight situation, then this is probably the addon you'll need.
Gear swapping
Outfitter Probably the premiere gear swapping addon for WoW. I'm including the gear managers because if you're playing dual spec, you have five completely different types of gear you can possibly choose from. Outfitter is nice, because it can provide automatic gear swapping based on certain situations (such as changing specs). This is also a nice way to manage resistance sets or just individual items to swap out based on certain scenarios or having a stamina set vs. an avoidance set.
Crossdresser If you don't need all of the bells and whistles of Outfitter and just use the Equipment Manager in game, but you want it to automatically swap gear when you swap specs, then this will do it for you. That's about the only thing it will do. If you're a minimalist, then this is probably your best choice.
Rez disambiguation
AnnounceRes When we still had Divine Intervention, I'd occasionally get a healer saved on a wipe. As a thank you, I'd normally be one of the first people they would rez. As a rez class, I was expected to use my tiny mana bar to help get the rest of the raid back up and running. The problem was that I kept getting rez sniped. This was especially true as prot as I had virtually no haste to speak of. After that, I started to encourage people to let everyone know who they were trying to rez to avoid rezzing the same person twice and burning mana. This addon just does what it says: It announces when you start casting a rez on someone. Nothing more, nothing less. Making people watch their chat window is the hard part.
SmartRes2 If you want a little more information in your Redemption attempts, then you might want to look here. This color-codes your cast bar based on who is currently being rezzed. Green is good. Blue means someone has already finished re-live-ifying them, but they haven't accepted. Red means multiple people are trying to rez the same person. Less overlap means getting the raid back up and running faster for another attempt. That's always a plus.

I absolutely LOVE that timpani sound when I spend my holy power. It also sounds off when Eternal Glory procs, letting me know right away.
Besides, hearing it is much easier than having to look at the points.

I also find for tanking that it lets you get into a 'rhythm' of crusader striking on CD, and using judgement/consecration/avenger shield procs on the off beats, then hammer or sheild releasing at the end of every 'bar'

Ovale Spell Priority. Great for guidelining.

I am in love with the addon HearKitty for Holy Power indication. I love that it's an auditory signal, and not yet another glowing icon thingy I have to keep track of. :P The sounds are very nice to listen to, not at all annoying, and it's amazing how quickly it becomes natural to react to the appropriate sounds.
I am going to give ZOMGbuffs a try... I'm an altaholic, as well as playing a prot pally as my main, so if this can cover my pally AND alt needs, I'm sold!

"There is always the choice of an addon like Grid, VuhDo, Clique, or HealBot, but those are intended for doing healing as well and usually take up a lot of screen real estate"
Clique takes up a single tab in your Spellbook (that it creates itself) and work with all of your spells/macros, not just healing. I've used it in combination with Grid's threat tracker to taunt mobs off of people I can't find quickly with Righteous Defense (quick ctrl+Right Click), works like a charm!
Samuel Reese Dec 1st 2010 12:06PM
I forgot to add that it works with your existing unit frames as well, no need to use Grid if you don't like it.
Possum Dec 1st 2010 2:21PM
Grid has a threat tracker? Explain...
Pyromelter Dec 1st 2010 2:34PM
Clique > decursive. IMO, decursive is overly complicated. I have a 5-button mouse, and my mouse-button 4 is my cleanse/descurse button on all my characters that can do that. My raid frames light up like a christmas tree when someone has something that I can dispel, so clique really does the trick. Decursive seemed needlessly overcomplicated in comparison.
Backer Dec 1st 2010 3:17PM
Seconded. All raiding paladins of any spec should have Grid (or the present raid frames) and Clique set-up to handle all the Hands and cleanse, plus Righteous Defense if you're Prot. Macros (Hand of Freedom on your focus target) are useful, but Grid+Clique will allow you to be dynamic.
Samuel Reese Dec 1st 2010 9:21PM
@Possum Aggro is one of the settings within Grid, I personally have it set so that whenever anyone has aggro of a mob it'll paint a red border around their health box.
I should have mentioned I also have it set up for all my "Hands" as well, but I figured just mentioning the one major thing I use it for is good enough.

Are ther any addons that allow you to see more easily when the sacred duty procc is up so you know how long you have to build up a three power shield?
Lemons Dec 1st 2010 12:43PM
I would probably use NeedtoKnow (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info14579-NeedToKnow-Updated.html) for this. It's like all those other timer addons addons mentioned in the article above except it's customizable. So you could make a bar and called "Sacred Duty" or whatever the exact name of the proc is, and then when the proc you'll get a timer bar telling you the exact time you have left on the proc.
thansal Dec 1st 2010 2:28PM
Power Auras is perfect for that type of stuff.
Personally, I just sat down one day and hammered at how it worked (it is not the most intuitive of addons). I didn't know about CLC so I use it for any character that is on a priority system instead of a rotation, and with the change to prot I bit the bullet and set it up. The things I have set up are:
A CLC like bar of my prot 'rotation' spells with CDs to know when I can pop what.
A Holy Power indicator that gives me a visual and aural cue for when I hit 3 HP.
A visual cue for when I can use Hammer of Wrath.
And when I get home, a visual cue for when Sacred Duty procs :D
Lemons has a good point about NeedToKnow, however I honestly didn't like it my self, but it was mainly because it didn't fit what I wanted at the time, and I think /powa does the same job just as well.
RUDY Dec 1st 2010 12:35PM
Playing a pally for years now, lots of experience both with my paladin and a couple of 80 alts. Yet still there was some great stuff in your post, Thanks!
Guy Dec 1st 2010 1:32PM
No threat meters? I use Skada used to use Omen, but didn't like the look, so I use Skada. I also use grid, have it set up so anyone with aggro gets a little red dot, and use clique to quickly and easily pull aggro back.
I haven't played my Prot Pally much since 4.0.1 since I have been leveling my shammy, but with only 2 blessings and everyone in the party gets the same buff, what would be the point of Pallypower and ZOMG Buffs? Or am I missing something?
Pyromelter Dec 1st 2010 2:13PM
You're not missing anything. Buffs have been significantly consolidated at this point. I really don't see how anyone can justify the memory usage (even if it's very small like 1kb) of a buff monitoring addon. The only addon you should get would be a full raid buff mod, that tracks everything like flasks and food buff. Really, only the raid leaders need that one though to make sure everyone is flasked and well fed, and to see if any stragglers are missing a buff somewhere.
Kerevin Dec 1st 2010 1:34PM
I got a noobish question about buff monitoring etc, maybe I just have had bad luck (or poor search skills) but I've been looking for ages for a simple addon that will just let me indicate that I'd like to be reminded when certain buffs fail (not just for my pally but for my lock, shaman, etc) and then, when the indicated buff(s) end, just do something as simple as popping up a big persistent 'HEY YOUR BUFF JUST ENDED' for 10 seconds or so... in other words, long enough for me to notice even in the midst of a hectic battle without picking it out of the sea of buff icons near my minimap, but not constant and irritating under situations where I may not actually care or have any ability to do anything about it (on a 10 minute griffon flight for example).
I know there's a bunch of addons that will do this sort of thing *in addition to* a lot of other stuff, but most of them are way more complex than I need. I can't imagine I'm the only person who has ever wanted something simple like this, so I guess the question is... does something like this already exist? I've considered just writing my own addon to deal with it, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to obviously. Anyways, thanks if anyone has any ideas on this!
Pyromelter Dec 1st 2010 2:17PM
The problem with what you're asking is that those type of notifications are baked into a lot of different addons, most notably power auras and fortexorcist.
I actually track my self-buffs manually with classtimer, and I use a simplified setup of elkano's buff bars. You basically can't get just an "end of buff notification" addon. The simplest way to do that would be with power auras (and power auras is not a simple addon if you've never used it).
Satrina buff frame might do what you're asking too, but I'm a die-hard elkano's guy.
babasyzygy Dec 1st 2010 2:19PM
What I would really love? An AddOn that lets me see the holy power of the Pally tank I am healing from my Druid.
Protection Pallies have so much self-healing now that it is hard to see whether my target is actually in trouble, or if he's just about to hit his Word of Glory. Would save me a lot of mana and sweat.
Possum Dec 1st 2010 2:25PM
But if the pallie is past level 40 they're probably going to be using that holypower for extra threat rather than self healing? Sure they're probably keeping track of their own health but unless things are going to absolute shit they're probably trusting you to keep their health up.
