Scattered Shots: Pre-heroic hunter gear in Cataclysm

Cataclysm is just around the corner, and it's time to put away the shiny new pets and start planning for level 85. We've already discussed optimizing our 80 to 85 leveling, so now we'll focus on our level 85 gear. To that end, we have a massive info dump for you today. We are going to start by looking at our pre-heroic gear options and save the pre-raid gear for a next Thursday. Unlike Wrath, Cataclysm heroics promise to be actually challenging.
When we first step into the new heroics after reaching level 85, they'll be much harder than Wrath heroics were when we first hit 80. Heroics will absolutely be wiping groups and giggling madly while doing so, so you don't want to go into them with just whatever gear you happened to end up with when you finished leveling. In fact, the dungeon finder will have a minimum gear requirement to queue for the heroics (in the beta, it was ilvl 329), so even if you want to be an underperforming anchor to your group, the game won't let you. (Well, it will -- there's still no cure for idiocy -- but it won't let you in without at least being geared for it.)
So join me after the cut for the massive list of all the gear you're going to be aiming to collect to start slaughtering heroics. This should help you plan which instances you want to run while leveling and which reputations to pursue.
Best pre-heroic hunter gear
This gear list includes gear available from quests, crafting, reputation rewards up to revered, justice points, and normal-mode dungeons. It does not include any gear from heroics, craftable gear requiring heroic mats, profession-specific gear, exalted rep gear, or PvP rewards. I've tried to include several options for each slot, and in general, the items in each slot are listed from best to worst, so the first item (or two) in each slot is your absolute best DPS option. That said, these items are all good, and the difference between the top and bottom of each slot on the short list is small.
The Wowhead databases still have gaps and sometimes buggy information in them, so if you see something that looks out of place, drop a note in the comments.
We'll discuss some specifics about deciding which pieces to go after later, but first let's get right into gear list.

** Starred items may also be among the best in slot items for heroic-level gear.
A note on heroic gear
The goal with this gear is to enable us to enter and be successful in heroics. Once we start heroics, much of this gear will be replaced, and you certainly don't need to have your pre-heroic best in slot for every single slot to be successful. I've gone through and compared this gear with all of the heroic-level gear; if any gear on this list also made it to the top of the heroic-level gear, I've marked it with two red stars (**). Those are items that you can safely hold onto until you begin raiding, and as such, they're the ones that are likely worth extra effort or cost to acquire.
If an item is a difficult grind or a troublesome drop and it's not starred, it might be worth just taking the easiest item to get elsewhere on this list for that slot, since it'll be replaced once you're running heroics anyway.
As with this gear list, the list of heroic gear that has been datamined is not entirely complete, so it's always possible that we'll discover a new item that will knock one of the starred items off the top of the list. I wouldn't worry about it too much -- the loot lists are very close to complete, and starred items will probably still be on the short list.
Justice points
Most of us are going to hit level 85 with 4,000 justice points (and if you don't have 4k yet, that's something to work on before Cataclysm launch). This means we can purchase one or two items immediately. There isn't a right answer to what to buy with them first. Generally, you want to use the justice points to prop up slots for which you've been unlucky on the drops, or where it saves you from needing to grind out an entire reputation.
You're usually pretty safe with justice point purchases, as those items also make the short list for best heroic-level gear.
Crafted items
It's worth noting that there's an entire leatherworking craftable set that is the introductory PvP set. In almost all cases, these items are significantly worse than what you could get from several other sources (except for the wrist slot, where we have shockingly few options). However, if you just need to fill in one or two slots to make your ilvl minimum, it may be worth having a couple of these made to fill in those slots, since they're all ilvl 333 items.
There are several jewelcrafting items that are very good indeed and are surprisingly BoE (unless the databases are wrong). However, these all require the Chimera's Eye -- the Cataclysm version of the Dragon's Eye, and likely to be very, very expensive. Horrendously expensive, in those first couple of weeks. These are really options for people with deep pockets.
Head slot
I strongly recommend trying to get one of the top three helms on this list, not the fourth (though the fourth can tide you over). You really want a helm with a meta-gem slot, which means grinding out Wildhammer rep for Alliance and Dragonmaw for Horde -- or dumping a bunch of justice points on the next best helm.
Ranged weapon
All of the ilvl 346 ranged weapons are very, very close to each other in DPS. The Kickback 5000 is technically the best, with that lovely red socket. If you're a troll, however, you'll net more DPS from the Overpowered Chicken Splitter and taking advantage of your racial.
Update: Whoops! The ilvl 346 ranged require heroic mats -- so we'll have to start off with the Volatile Thunderstick. Thanks for the catch commenters.
Gemming and enchanting
As a general rule of thumb, only use the best gems and enchants for your ilvl 346 gear -- thus stuff you'll be hanging on to. You still want to gem your lower level gear, but use the cheap gems for that stuff. We'll get into gems and enchants in more detail in the future, but when in doubt go for agility.
Reputations
There are a lot of reps that provide rewards that we can use, and in a perfect world, we'll find ways to avoid having to grind all of them up to revered.
Keep in mind, however, that you will need to get rep with Therazane for the new shoulder enchant (Greater Inscription of Shattered Crystal) and with Ramkahen for the new helm enchant (Arcanum of the Ramkahen). We are not going to be able to avoid grinding rep with these guys, so we may as well plan on grabbing their other rep rewards as well. Also both Guardians of Hyjal and Earthen Ring have exalted rep rewards (ilvl 359) that we're probably going to want.

Despite the troll racial, no one wants to use a bow. They'll just think we're one o them damned hippie tree hugging elves.
G01851 Dec 2nd 2010 9:47AM
Actually I prefer bows.. they fit the theme of WoW better. I was quite disappointed that WOTLK only provided a few bows, and most of them were rather difficult to get. There should be more bows available to the more casual user.
Alchemistmerlin Dec 2nd 2010 9:54AM
It doesn't help that the troll male bow animation makes them look like they've NEVER used a bow before. They pull the string UP away from the bow, therefore firing the arrow into either the ground or their own foot.
Alchemistmerlin Dec 2nd 2010 9:57AM
Sorry for the double post but...how do bows "fit the theme of WoW better"?
This is a magitek world, guns fit just as well as gyrocopters, airplanes, teleporters, mechanohogs...I can go on.
Grovinofdarkhour Dec 2nd 2010 10:04AM
Hadn't you heard? Trolls are apparently descended from elves. :)
Thiron Dec 2nd 2010 10:19AM
Actually, it's the other way, elves might or might not be trolls transformed by well of eternity.

I never understood why so many people perceive the Night Elf's love of nature as a flaw or a sign of weakness.
Maybe if you were to read some lore, you would realize that the Night Elves are the single most brutal and violent race in the entire game. Yes, they are even more brutal than Orcs. There's a famous quote that gets thrown out a lot where Grom Hellscream himself showed that he was surprised and impressed by how vicious they are.
Sure they're tree huggers, but they're VIOLENT tree huggers. And that makes all the difference.
Also, the theory gos that Night Elves evolved from Trolls. While there's not really much evidence behind it, I could see that being the case. Particularly since comparing a Night Elf to a Troll is like comparing a modern day human to a cave man.

Sometimes i hate how humorless a lot of people on wow insider are. Mugutu was making a joke... don't take it so personally. Frostheim himself often jokes about those tree hugging hippy night elves, which is obviously what mugutu was referencing.
Jaeger Dec 2nd 2010 8:26AM
Thanks Frostheim. Regarding Guns vs Bows, I just get tired of the gun sounds; the bows and crossbows are much more quiet.
Moofius Dec 2nd 2010 9:28AM
Try out http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/silencer.aspx
I like it, makes is go pew pew!
G01851 Dec 2nd 2010 9:47AM
I use this addon now... the gun noise is just too harsh otherwise. I still prefer bows :)
Randy* Dec 2nd 2010 10:57AM
The nice thing about that addon, it works on everyone's gun. So, even if you're not a hunter, and just don't like the noise, you can install this addon. It just requires you copy a few sound files into a particular folder and you're set.
Undra Dec 2nd 2010 3:12PM
I actually prefer the gunshot sound. To be fair, my raid has expressed annoyance on a few occasions. But I find it comforting to hear my hunter doing something. Otherwise i wonder if i'm actually firing or not, little damage numbers floating around don't seem to register as activity.
And frankly, the guns look better. Crossbows are always either unimpressive or laughable. And Bows these days either incorporate cumsly looking bucklers or jsut don't have the elegence they used to. But the guns, oh the guns, if there are only a few good-looking bows, then there are equally few bad-looking guns.

I'm drifting off into a daydream here... of a dungeon finder tool that not only filters by gear level, but also by, say, how many times you've pulled aggro off the tank in the last 20 dungeons... and whether you kept hitting that mob then, or stopped hitting it and ran to the tank... or feigned death and dropped it on top of the healer... And a dungeon tool that ranks you by how many times you've not used misdirection... or down-ranks you for every "gogogo"...!
-Ahem, ok, back to reality.
Great article as usual, Frost. HOW you manage to stay on top of this amount of complicated and ever-changing information, I do not know but I appreciate you all the more for it!

Vogie Dec 2nd 2010 10:01AM
I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with wowhead filters, and everything to do with being a wee bit plastered
Hrothgar Dec 2nd 2010 12:45PM
I'm dreaming of a Dungeon Finder that filters tanks by how often they pull before the healer has better than 80% mana, pulls before all the dps is even in the room, stops attacking mobs and just starts running to the next group thus dragging the current group with him inspite of the fact that the healer and some or all of the dps may be casting, phones in the run because they have no queue and never has to wait, blame the dps because they haven't figured out the mechanics of threat generation on their fury warrior that is specced for prot because they don't have to wait in queue as a tank but they will need on off-spec items anyway, goes AFK to order/eat a pizza knowing that the group won't kick because it's so damn hard to get a tank (even a bad tank), consistently demonstrates that just because he's/she's the tank, they behave as if they are the best player in the group when the odds are against them (every time), and complains when people make honest mistakes in blatant disregard of the dozens of mistakes they just made.
The filter should parse these items and put the tank that has the fewest of these flaws at the top of the available tank roster in the lookup table.
Ahem, back to reality...
hahahahaahahahahahah, whew, never happen.
Undomiel Dec 2nd 2010 1:40PM
Oh My Gosh Hrothgar!!!
have you been inside my head? This is the most true and best comment on wow insider ever...and I mean ever. Having myself levelled a few dps and healer via the dungeon finder tool I can safely say that bad tanks are the absolute worst thing about it.
Especially as a healer you really start to hate these guys...cause you know were getting the blame when the group can't survive the pally "tank" in ret spec and gear pulling 30% of an entire instance. Of as dps you hate them equally much for making you leveling soo much longer.
In my latest experience I can say that I reached the ignore cap around lvl75 on my disc priest. And that ignore list is filled with 96% bad, awful, ignorant, pseudo tanks with egos so inflated they learned flying at lvl 1.
On my good days I have often tried to help them out by explaining a few of the very simple basic rules of tanking...but so many times they will reply with pure un-watered down hatred and bile that I finally came to terms with the fact that it simply isn't worth my trouble.
Oh and don't give me any crap about not knowing what tanking is like...I've tanked every bloody thing up to and including Arthas. And the simple fact remains: tanking is damn easy... It can be stressful it can be demanding but it is not overly complicated.
What Blizzard should do is impose a speck check. So you cant que as tank if you don't have a tank spec. In addition you should not get a dungeon CD if you leave a group after the tank has left...Oh and they should put some tank recommendations in the login screen, like say: as a tank, your role is to PROTECT your group - not to boss them around. And perhaps: as a tank remember you are not invinsible: you need a healer with a manabar that is not close to empty when you pull....There are others but atleast this would be a start
Shorten Dec 9th 2010 7:48PM
This sort of hostility is the only reason there are so few tanks. Grow up, make a tank and do it better. Really.
A major part of tanking disappointment derives from the fact that 4 people in the party expect 4 different kinds of tanking. The only thing they agree on is that they are entitled to a free-ride with a tank that outgears the place. For each one that expects a zerg-machine, another expects time to pick loot from every mob and cute joke now and then.
Of course imposters must be put off immediatly. The tank is just another player. And one that willingly accepted a pivotal role. However keep in mind that more often than not, you'll be queued with people no better than you, some of which are just learning the ropes.
Ganatola Dec 2nd 2010 9:10AM
One quick catch, Frostheim, one needs to be exalted with Therazane to get the shoulder enchant. Revered is fine for the helm enchant.
Otherwise, thanks for the guide, I'm sure my baby hunter will be using it in the near future.
