Although I would normally be all for something like a spec check there have been times when I have had some ab solutely wonderful tanks who were not even specced into a tanking tree. A holy paladin in sm instances, various ret paladins all across the board, including h. Northrend dungeons. The cat specced bear doing a wonderful job despite his reluctance to pick up tanking after the tank left. As my experiences go, paladins seem to be the ones who can more easily do the tanking thing while in a different spec but the most basic of things are available to all the tanking classes when not tank specced.
