Must-have PvP talents for shaman in 4.0.3, part 2

- Ancestral Resolve It's a flat 10 percent damage reduction, which is great. The catch is that it only kicks in when you're casting something. This basically means you should always be casting something. That's not a problem, considering shaman have a lot of spells with cast times. In Cataclysm, you'll also learn Spiritwalker's Grace, which actually lets you cast things while moving. Delicious.
- Focused Insight I'm skipping most of the obvious heal bonuses in the tree for this discussion and focus on other things, such as Focused Insight, which encourages the use of shock spells. Think of it as a heavily discounted shock spell that boosts healing. In the battlegrounds, there's just no reason not to use it, and it allows you to hold up on your own offensively.
- Nature's Guardian Granted, going below 30 percent health is very dangerous in PvP, but if there's anyone who can get out of that hole, it's a restoration shaman. Nature's Guardian is a hefty three-point investment that will kick in a lot of times in PvP.
- Ancestral Healing and Ancestral Awakening Though neither talent is particularly intended for PvP, it's notable that crit has a higher value in the new environment. You'll want to stack crit, and it actually will be helpful in PvP as well as PvE. Ancestral Awakening is also an important component for keeping you or your allies alive because it's a passive bonus heal on top of what you're putting out.
- Nature's Swiftness This is still one of the best activated abilities to have, now safely (and for some, tragically) out of the hands of elemental shaman. Remember what I said about getting out of that below-30-percent hole? This spell plays an important part of it.
- Improved Cleanse Spirit and Cleansing Waters Improved Cleanse Spirit is important because it establishes restoration shaman as one of the specs that can remove magical debuffs, formerly one of shaman's weaknesses. Add to that the bonus granted by Cleansing Waters and it becomes almost counterproductive to apply debuffs when a restoration shaman is around. Note that Cleanse Spirit will still go off even without a target nowadays (and not proc Cleansing Waters), which means you should use it prudently; otherwise, you'll drain your mana unnecessarily.
- Telluric Currents This is another one of those talents that encourage mixing things up. The developers encourage healers to cast offensive spells during downtimes, and this talent makes sure that it won't waste your mana and leave you gasping for heals when you actually need it.
- Tidal Waves This is a practical no-brainer in that you'll actually be casting the spells required to reduce the cast time of spells with cast times that you'll want reduced, anyway. This means you'll be able to throw out faster Healing Waves and Greater Healing Waves when you need them. You can also glyph with Glyph of Healing Wave (major) to make sure you keep yourself topped up right along with your targets.
Personally, I'm pretty excited to get hopping as enhancement in the battlegrounds, somewhat-gimped DPS notwithstanding. Among the three specs, it currently offers the most exciting playstyle, and the best enhancement shaman can frustrate opponents by controlling the tempo of a fight. My only question is whether I'll be rolling a goblin from scratch or ponying up for a race change for one of my oldest characters ... decisions, decisions.

@Zach - great blog, I agree with you about enhance having the most amazing mobility (beaten only perhaps by feral) for melee pvp... Since I don't play elemental, I can't really speak to it, but I think it is absolutely worthwhile to pick up the 31-pt EQ for exactly the reason you suggested... I think the d-bag OP above me is stuck in arena season 5, and isn't thinking at all about battlegrounds.
@Jcompguy - Not only are you wrong, you're an elitist d-bag about it.... that's funny to me. First, channeling a ranged aoe effect is absolutely useful in competitive pvp (rated battlegrounds). If you've ever rezzed next to a group of melee fighting other melee; if you've ever flanked behind the Lumber Mill; if you've ever attempted to guard the flag in Warsong Gulch; if you've ever defended a GY in SotA or AV; if you've ever defended against stealth; etc. etc. etc. Basically, if you need to stop people from capping something, especially if there is more than one bad guy, channeled is the way to go. According to your philosophy, any mage who Blizzards, priest who Mind Sears, lock who Rain of Fires, or druid who Starfalls is also a "bad".
I'm sure I'll get a "WHATEVS DUDE IM GLADIATOR BADDIE L2PLAY NUBSAUCE" type reply.
jcompguy Dec 6th 2010 5:27PM
@Zenotho
I don't even need to point out how bad you are since you are comparing a 31 point talent to trainable abilities of other classes. Also, starfall is nothing like earthquake. It's not channeled, it does awesome damage, and it has a 30 yard radius aoe component. You are obviously terrible at PvP, just like the author who is telling people to use earthquake and the grounding totem glyph.
If you are able to get off an earthquake against multiple people trying to cap farm, the other team is awful. They either weren't paying attention and didn't see you standing behind a bush, or they failed for not having 1 person attacking the lone guy at farm.
Earthquake is bad and you are an idiot for thinking otherwise.

Thanks for the write-up! I've always wanted to try Enhancement PVP, but I've always been told pre-cataclysm that it's the worst thing ever. I'd love to know what other talents I should take, since I have no idea if I should be going for buffed up shields, Elemental devastation, Flurry, etc. All of these seem to be good options, but there just aren't enough points for all of those, and going into a second tree! Also, which should I go for after I'm done in Enhancement? 3% flat crit seems pretty good, and extra healing recieved for pvp would be nice!
jcompguy Dec 6th 2010 4:31AM
While not the most helpful advice, I hate to say it but what you've heard is correct. Enhancement is mostly trash for serious PvP. It can definitely be fun in casual battlegrounds, but you will get absolutely stomped to death by just about any other class/spec that knows what they're doing.
That could definitely change in Cata since it's going to be a whole new take on PvP, but you shouldn't get your hopes up too high.
sullyXXX Dec 6th 2010 4:38AM
Yeah I'm not going to be going for 2300 rating or anything, just bg fun. It's just that I've noticed that with my melee characters, my warrior in particular, I'm completely boned for pvp since 4.0.1. A combination of not being able to stay close to ranged folks and their rediculously huge damage (mages, I'm looking at you. Warlocks got their 12%) makes it impossible to kill anything caster-like. It's fun sparring with DKs and pallies though.
Anyway, enhancement seems to have so much control in the tree! You can really keep whoever you want in range, or indeed kite whoever you don't. The funny thing is, elemental is apparently lacking in pvp talents, but is so so so powerful in battlegrounds it hurts. But that's just casters in general atm.

thank you jcompguy, absolutly right.
Jc icefox, options dont matter if they are horrible, and jcompguy already explained why.
Also it doesnt matter who you hexed or hammered because for every time you reflected something with that stupid glyph you had to eat 3 times as many.
So please stop sucking the writer off, he can speak for himself and prove me wrong, which i doubt will happen, as this commonly accepted knowledge in shaman community.
Instead of calling me asshole make a point for your case and stop taking everything you read on this site as facts. This is a blog site anyway and blogs are, you know... opinions.
Dawts Dec 6th 2010 5:25AM
Take your own advice and prove your point, instead of just vaguely suggesting that wow.com is going to lose credibility because a couple readers don't agree with them.
Guy Dec 6th 2010 9:58AM
Dude, even if you're right, you're still kind of a dick. Can't you at least be respectful?
Or I guess, if I should treat you like you treat everyone else; Shouldn't you be in middle school right now, kiddo?
Dawts Dec 6th 2010 6:13PM
Wow, this article sure brought out the backseat bloggers in force. I'd take earthquake, I guess the ability to knock people out os stealth, deny a flag cap, or put a group of people in combat is a bad thing? I'm not a shaman but I'm going to assume you don't have to channel the full spell if someone is about to attack you, earthquake is a utility spell, so treat it like one.
podxvost Dec 6th 2010 10:11AM
its not just couple of readers its the whole pvp shaman comunity. Im was just trying to point out the obvious mistakes in the article, but some of the comenters cant take critisism even when its not directed at them. i wasnt giving advice, i was pointing out the flaws
And yes when you provide the information that goes against the generally accepted knowledge of wow pvp community, you do loose credibility.

Interesting stuff...of course everything will probably be "Rebalanced" once we get into rated BG's/arenas anyway...looking forward to roll facing some Horde
TheBigFatMuffinMan Dec 6th 2010 11:11AM
I'm confused. You said we're supposed to take Frostbrand on our main hand, not Windfury? Makes sense, I suppose, but my question is, do we still use Flametongue as our off-hand, or Windfury for the super burst proc?
Zach Dec 6th 2010 11:16AM
Frostbrand MH for PvP, Windfury MH for PvE. Flametongue on OH for both.
Emophia Dec 6th 2010 11:47AM
Unless something has really cganged sine beta it's
MH WF OF FB fir pvp
Chmmr Dec 6th 2010 12:12PM
I could be doing it wrong, but I prefer Windfury main, Frostbrand off. Since I'm not using flametongue weapon, and thus not propping up lava lash, I'm also not spec'd into the searing flames / ILL talents.
Zach Dec 6th 2010 12:41PM
@Chmmr - If you're foregoing Lava Lash, then that works really fine, too.
lefauve Dec 6th 2010 12:42PM
I'd have to disagree with grabbing Improved Fire Nova for Enhancement. Most of the time we have Searing Totem down for the Improved Lava Lash talent, to be able to use fire nova we have to have a Magma Totem down (correct me if I'm wrong). In my opinion I think those talent points are better spent somewhere else. Leave the AOE for Dungeons.
Zach Dec 6th 2010 12:48PM
That's correct. Magma, Flametongue, or Fire Elemental. You make a good point, and i think i overlooked the fact that you can't use Fire Nova with Searing Totem. I apologize for the oversight!
phfantunes Dec 6th 2010 1:38PM
"If it wasn't already clear, you should be using Frostbrand Weapon on your main hand for PvP".
Why are you suggesting Frostbrand on the MH instead of the OH? We use FB for the snare and Frozen Power, both of which are accomplished on the OH. This way, we keep Windfury on our MH so it doesn't suffer from the 50% damage penalty of the off hand.
Am I missing something?
