Cataclysm hunter pet highlights

The highest highlight of all the new pets that came in with the shattering of Azeroth and the Cataclysm is, of course, tameable Chromaggus. Well, at least he's the highlight in my eyes, since he dropped the sexiest shield ever and I've always loved him. Especially when he dropped it for me.
But Chromaggus is far from the only new pet you could tame in Cataclysm, if you were of a mind to. There are new skins, a new spirit beast, and whole new pet families to consider. As that maven of hunter pets Mania pointed out, this may be the best expansion ever for hunter pet collectors.
New pet families
But Chromaggus is far from the only new pet you could tame in Cataclysm, if you were of a mind to. There are new skins, a new spirit beast, and whole new pet families to consider. As that maven of hunter pets Mania pointed out, this may be the best expansion ever for hunter pet collectors.
New pet families
- Beetles Tenacity pets that like fruit and fungus, these are bugs. Just imagine Neil Patrick Harris reading your pet's mind, and you're in the ballpark.
- Dogs Ferocity pets with a fairly broad appetite, these will eat meat, cheese, fish, bread, fruit, and fungus, so they're easy to feed. They're dogs. I'm positive you know what a dog is.
- Foxes
WoW Insider shadow priest columnists, they like to eat public adulation.Ferocity pets like the dog, with a hankering to snack on meat, fish and fruit. They do a little dance which is painfully adoable, like what I imagine gnome shaman's ghost wolf forms would do. - Monkey Cunning pets that enjoy fungus and fruit and being fairly closely related to humans for a pet. What's next, Vrykul pets? Actually, that would be pretty cool. I'd tame King Ymiron myself.
- Shale Spider These seem to be an exotic Tenacity pet (which means only beast mastery hunters could tame one) that are made of stone and that eat meat, fish, raw meat, and raw fish. Why they don't eat rocks is beyond me.
New pet skins
So what else do we have to look forward to besides new hunter pet families? Well, for starters, there are some new spirit beasts. Have you ever desired to have your very own Ghostcrawler? Well, now you can! Yes, they put Ghostcrawler in the game, and if you're a BM hunter, he's tameable. In addition, if you couldn't get your husband to powerlevel a shaman just so you could get Bloodlust/Heroism cast while you started to tame and prayed for a meta gem to proc, you'll now be able to pick up a ghost wolf spirit beast of your own ... if you're OK with doing it the easy way.
In addition to that, many animals are getting whole new looks in Cataclysm. If you'd like a turtle god for a pet, you can do that. He comes both in burning and non-burning varieties. Terrorpene (shares the Nemesis skin) and Ghamoo-Ra (shares the Tortolla skin) are both tameable in Cataclysm.
Also, if you're just dying to look like a pirate, there are seven more tameable parrots in the game, in addition to Aotona.
You can even tame the Alliance Lion Mount, basically. (They look like this.) Or a Buru the Gorger lookalike! How about a horrible undead parody of an eagle? We have one of those now, too. In that particular case, I'd say the sky was the horrifying limit. But it will match your Forsaken hunter nicely.
Lost and changed pet skins
However, with all of this good stuff, there is some bad. Several pets have been lost with the changes to Azeroth caused by the Shattering. It's important to consult the Petopia list to make sure you're not abandoning a pet you can't get back.
Many of the rare spawns have changed into entirely new looks as well. Mania has helpfully compiled an excellent list of pet changes in Cataclysm. Some pets have changed families (from, say, Carrion Bird to Bird of Prey), while others have just changed appearances (many cats have changed, like Rak'Shiri and Shango), and still others have changed both pet family and appearance, like the Scarlet Tracking Hounds (now dogs with the same mastiff skin we see in Gilneas) and the Silithid Swarmer (now correctly a silithid, rather than a scorpid and with a silithid model). You can even tame a famous cartoon celebrity cat, if you wish.
There's a lot out there for you to obsessively stalk and tame, hunters. Go and bedevil your loved ones until they help you spawn camp for days and days and days.

"Why they don't eat rocks is beyond me."
Darn, if they did, we know Dawn Moore would be prepared to feed the little buggers.
And as for the fox description... OH SNAP. :P
MusedMoose Dec 6th 2010 9:41PM

Hmm, monkey pets eh? Wonder how long before we run across "hilarious" jokes and emotes about people spanking them.
/sigh
MadBlue Dec 6th 2010 10:00PM
There's already an NPC monkey pet named "Spanks"
Tokhand Dec 6th 2010 10:34PM
Monkeys do a thing, just like cute lil' fox dance and the sleepy lazy bear. But they do something more awesome than that.
What do the monkeys do?
HINT: They fling something.
Amaxe Dec 6th 2010 10:53PM
Yah... that sounds like Blizzard all right.
I'm surprised they don't make a monkey pet as a reward for a poop quest...
Angus Dec 6th 2010 11:02PM
Amaxe, it isn't an official expansion if we aren't gathering poop for someone.
At least, in Liche King, there was less of that crap to put up with.
(I await and the welcome the downvoting that pun deserved)

Guess what! In Redridge Mountains, you even get to wear the poop you gather!

@Angus
If I LOL, you get an upvote ;-) (Remember, with all my /duck and /flees the mob, a bad pun is always appreciated)
I hope you all have fun tomorrow with the xpac. I don't miss WoW, but I still like hanging out here for the comment banter.

He (Chromaggus) is not just tameable once Cat drops. He already IS tameable. I have him on my main, Myssiing. I kept his real name, and I just call him Chrommy for short. ^.^
Mona Dec 6th 2010 10:12PM
