Lichborne: A Cataclysm 101 guide for death knights, Part 2

We've actually already covered quite a few things you'll need to know in previous editions of Lichborne. Let's go back and take a look at some of those articles now.
Leveling your death knight from 80 to 85 While this guide focuses on levels 80 to 85, much of the advice will also apply for levels 55 to 80. If you take away one thing from the article, it should probably be that frost 2H will still probably be your best bet to level quickly, blood your best bet to level safely. Unholy is still doable, of course; it's just a lot harder to use Death Pact and Death Strike, since the unholy tree depends on heavily on your ghoul and doesn't use a frost/unholy strike that Death Strike can replace. You'll find model leveling specs for 2H frost and blood in the article as well.
Death knight talents, specs, and rotations for patch 4.0.1 The damage rotations and talent specs listed in this post are still more or less the ones you'll probably be using at level 85 in Cataclysm, and the damage rotations still work for, say, dungeon leveling through your 70s. The specs also come with glyph recommendations.
A guide to death knight spell alerts As you level, you may notice weird shiny graphics and auras appearing around your death knight. Often, these auras mean you have a talented proc ready for use. This article will let you know what's popping up, why it's popping up, and how best to use it.
Death knight regemming and reforging for patch 4.0.1 This article focuses mostly on reforging and regemming for level 80, but the basic information (and gem colors/stats) will apply to you at level 85. You'll probably want to save your money until level 85 to gem or reforge gear. You'll replace everything else too quickly for it to be worth it. If you pick up one of those random pieces of gear that have gem slots while leveling and you feel like you absolutely have to stick something in there, put in a strength gem if you're DPS or a stamina gem if you're a tank. Those two are still your go-to colors, even at level 85. Just don't waste money on an epic gem to slot pre-raiding gear.
The Bare Necessities: The least you should know
Frost 2H Get the slowest, highest-damage two-handed weapon you can find, and go to town. Focus on strength on your gear, with haste, mastery, and critical strike rating as your secondary stats, in that order. You'll use Unholy Presence because you'll need the GCD (global cooldown) reduction to use all of your resources in a timely manner. While solo leveling, you can probably mostly eschew diseases in favor of lots of Obliterates and Frost Strikes, with the odd Death Strike if you need to recover health, and Howling Blast when you proc Freezing Fog. In dungeon groups, though, go back to the rotation in the article linked above. If you want to start raiding, you'll want to make sure you hit 8 percent hit and 26 expertise, even if you have to shed or reforge other stats to get there.
Frost dual wielding This will work more or less like frost 2H, except you'll want two slow, high-damage, one-handed weapons, preferably ones with strength on them if you can, although agility weapons will work if they're still slow and high-damage. For gear, focus on strength, with mastery, critical strike rating, and haste as your secondary stats, in that order. Frost dual wielding will use Frost Presence, since Unholy Presence just exacerbates frost dual wielding's problems with hitting the GCD cap.
Unholy As mentioned in the article linked above, unholy is probably the most inefficient leveling tree, but it is doable. Get a slow, high-damage, two-handed weapon and focus on strength, haste, and critical strike rating, in that order. You'll still want to spread diseases and otherwise use a general raiding damage rotation (as linked in the articles above) for unholy. Use Unholy Presence, as you'll want the shorter GCD.
Blood Blood will use a slow, high-damage 2H weapon to maximize threat and damage from Death Strike and Heart Strike. If you choose to level blood, you'll probably just want to use Frost Presence while soloing in order to get a little bit of extra damage. Focus on getting stamina and mastery if you're tanking (dodge and parry replace mastery if you're not 80 yet or can't find gear with mastery on it). If you're soloing, you might as well start building a DPS set focused on the stats used by the DPS spec you plan to use for raiding or grouping, if any. You can use the basic attack method outlined in the diseaseless tanking Lichborne column to kill stuff quickly and easily.

Even though you say it is inefficient, I have SO MUCH fun spec'd as Unholy.
Just something about it makes killing dem baddies so satisfying.

Can the articles be less common-knowledge stuff that can be found from just reading abilities or talents, and more theory...Like other classes articles
Guruda Dec 7th 2010 12:50PM
@Michael
I mean, it IS a 101 article for, y'know... new people with little experience.
Brett Porter Dec 7th 2010 1:03PM
Aww someone beat me to it. Plus, not only is it a 101 guide, but I love, absolutely LOVE that they don't do much theorycrafting here.
Each class writer is different, but not many of them do much theorycrafting to begin with, so Daniel isn't alone here. EJ is the place for stuff like that; WI gives us stuff in a very matter-of-fact way that I'm sure most folks appreciate.

In the section on Haste, you missed the main reason why it is an amazing stat for 2H Frost
Might of the Frozen Wastes
It's what makes 2H Frost possible. Haste = More autoattacks = More runic power = More Frost Strikes
Elmouth Dec 7th 2010 11:56AM
Sorry but 2H frost is like melee huntards in BC.
Nobody's stopping you from doing it, but its just retarded.
SR Dec 7th 2010 12:05PM
How is it retarded? You get much more beneficial stats from 2-handers anyways, and hitting 8% hitcap is a LOT easier than hitting 27% for DW. Not to mention, with the added stamina from 2-handers (generally), you get higher survivability... Including more healing from Death Strikes.
Boom Dec 7th 2010 9:46AM
Frost dual-wield has a higher hit cap than 2H. While it's true that you do pick up 3% hit, you are still looking at 24% as a cap for DW (27% hit required to be capped for DW white-hits). That is, unless something radically changed since I logged onto my DW DK the other day.
Daniel Whitcomb Dec 7th 2010 11:26AM
It is true that there is a higher white hit cap for dual wielding. However, it is generally agreed upon by most theorycrafters that it's an inefficient use of your gearing potential to strive for anything past the 8% special attack hit cap.
SumDuud Dec 7th 2010 10:21AM
Nope you are correct. This morning I looked and my dw frost has 22%or so and has a chance to miss on 83 bosses. Likewise, expertise is only needed to hit 23 until cata content. There was a blue post about them changing it and not intending go fix it on earlier content. Not that people care much about those stats pre- end game but 26 is only needed at end game.
Sterb Dec 7th 2010 10:58AM
What Daniel said is correct. DW Frost only needs 5% hit to cap its specials, which is all you need to be effective. The value of hit beyond that cap is so tiny it's not even worth discussing (every other stat exceeds it). You don't try to get white hit cap as DW Frost. Never have, never will. Read for comprehension.
Boom Dec 7th 2010 11:13AM
@Sterb - In actuality, the only place the article references specials is when he is talking tanking. Howling Blast and Icy Touch are both spells and benefit from hit up to spell cap. No need trying to insult people to make yourself feel big.
Sterb Dec 7th 2010 11:36AM
"Primarily, YOUR WEAPON STRIKES (such as Scourge Strike or Obliterate) need to be able to hit stuff. For the first tier of Cataclysm raiding, this means you need a hit chance of 8 percent. Frost dual wielders will get 3 percent of that from talents, but Frost two-handed weapon users and unholy DPSers will need to get all 8 percent from gear."
Let me help you. Weapon strikes are specials.
As HB and IT are only used to apply FF and to consume Rime procs, the small amount of miss has little importance.
As for insulting people, I merely corrected you as you mistakenly attempted to correct Daniel. Turnabout and all that.

This was a good read, really helpfull, thanks

I really enjoy these guides, though I have a suggestion. I think it would be helpful for the class columnists to do a "301" guide for players that have the "101" stuff down, but could use some more tips on how to move past the basics without having to read 1000 posts on EJ.

What missing from all of this commentary is which talent tree or weapon choice (dual/single wield) actually leads to more dps. Daniel already said that 2H frost is good for leveling, and I have no evidence to doubt that. All other discussion is superfluous if you have no idea what does the most dps, unless you are talking about utility or PVP or something else. For pve grouping as a dps DK, your role is either dps or occasional off tank. So why confuse the issue?
Also the relative dps of the talent trees must be considered. if unholy and frost 1 or 2h are within 5% of each other, that's close enough for me for a leveling guideline. I'd rather play unholy since it's funner than frost (to me). Personally I like the zero downtime of blood and the fact that I just need an armor change to do tanking (my primary role). I'll see how that plays out but so far I haven't felt like it was slow leveling (in wraith).

I know I will get some flak from this comment from people who haven't tried it, but I really think it should be said anyways. Strength on a DK tank is actually almost as important as Stamina. Although the greater amounts of health will always be useful and needed, Strength provides a DK so much more threat, and is absolutely required when tanking for groups with huge dps output. We have some of the most awesome self-healing and damage mitigation in the game to make up for the loss "some" health reduction that it is worth gemming str over stam on occasion. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying to simply gem str. However, I will say that if you are a competent tank and don't allow the damage taken to be spikey for the healer's sake, you will easily surpass your dps counterparts in threat by finding the right balance of str to and to your equipment. Use Omen to guage how much threat you are comfortably above your group's output on trash and on drawn out boss fights. Gem or enchant to stay above everyone else with Strength and then go crazy with Stamina. Just always make sure to be gaining more threat than the next guy.
Again, I fully expect to get some flak on this, but I know it works well.

I noticed there was an article for healing priests in regards to professions. Is there by chance one for Death Knights? I finally made one (goblin; gives me a chance to do Horde side as well) and was looking for info. Thought of mining and engineering coupled with me being Unholy but wasn't sure (other option was Enchanting/Tailoring) as I never see Death Knights on the magic carpet....
Karl Dec 7th 2010 3:10PM
The forums on Blizz are pretty good about the subject, but I hate hunting through them. Engineering and Mining are great for DK tanks. If you are going stricly DPS, you may want to take Jewelcrafting or Enchanting with Engineering. Engineers have really come a long way since the days of vanilla wow. Mining is good for DK tanks just for the stam bonus, but I would only suggest it if you are also using it to support your second profession, such as BS/Eng/JC. Otherwise, if you already have a mining toon, just go straight for JC and Eng. That is a powerful combo for both DPS or Tank specs.

I WAS A BLOOD TANK BEFORE IT WAS THE TANK SPEC! WAY TO GO BLIZZ FOR MAKING PEOPLE REALIZE IT IS A TANK SPEC!
