Addon Spotlight: DrDamage

Welcome to the first Addon Spotlight post-Cataclysm edition! With the release of Cataclysm and the subsequent changing of environments, instances, raid and dungeon progress, and everything in between, certain addons that we've come to rely on continue to thrive or slowly die out as the world's needs change. Little forgotten addons, we salute you and hope that you find a way back into our hearts.
This week, your HMO better cover out-of-system doctors, because we're going to the best. Occasionally called "Doctor TMI" among my friends, DrDamage is a beefy little addon that adds a completely new level of understanding and information to your damage and healing abilities. Sometimes you learn a little too much about your skills. Nonetheless, DrDamage is a unique addon that can help you feel your way through Cataclysm's new skills and abilities, making you a heroic king again in no time.

What is DrDamage?
Addon Spotlight talked about DrDamage way back in 2008 (dinosaur times), and the conclusion was thus:
DrDamage is a great way for the non-number-cruncher to get into the number-crunching scene for the added benefits that number-crunching bestows upon said cruncher of numbers. I hold this crunchy belief today. You're not going to get Elitist Jerks-quality NASA graphs charting the quantum fuel consumption ratios of using Slice and Dice over a twin ion engine strapped to the back of your rogue, but you get data based on your own buffs and talents that helps you better understand your abilities' ... abilities. Think about it -- even if you don't particularly care about the process, the end result is a powerful piece of information, namely that some abilities are situationally better than others. And who doesn't want to improve their DPS or healing, eh?
Numbers are very important in WoW. The stalwart folks at EJ and other sites made this game playable for us, when items had wacky stats and the game never told us what our hit rating percentages were. DrDamage is the non-number-cruncher's way of paying that math some respect.
But what does it do?
After installing DrDamage, you get to do a little bit of setup, telling it what talents you are currently using and modifying your persistent buffs and target debuffs to calculate out some information handily available on your ability tooltips.
After you set up the buffs/debuffs and talents modifiers, you can set up what is actually calculated and displayed on your tooltips. You can tell DrDamage to calculate everything with your current stats or use your own custom stats to see what happens to your abilities when you get more hit, for example. It's a wonderful tool for learning a little bit more about the ins and outs of your abilities and what numbers affect what skills in different ways.
You can keep all of the information calculated on the tooltip or opt for a more compact version. Some people might be overwhelmed at the sheer craziness of so many numbers, so putting things into a more compact mode makes transitioning to this addon easier.

Another unique feature of DrDamage is that you can have the calculated damage or healing of your spells added to the action bar icon of your abilities. Doing this allows you to quickly see what abilities, based on the debuffs and buffs available to you at the time, will be perfect to cast. DrDamage supports most action bar mods, including the default bars, Bartender 4, Dominos, Macaroon, and much more.
Testimonials
DrDamage has accolades coming in from all over the world (via Twitter and Mumble), spreading the good word about the doctor's orders:
"DrDamage is great for learning a new class, because you don't know what is what. Even transitioning into a new spec, you would be doing yourself a favor using DrDamage as a learning tool."
Primrose, second best discipline priest ever
"DrDamage helped me compare specs!"
Eradris, new person
"Stupid Landro's gift box, giving me stupid Sandbox Tigers. What the hell, Landro?!"
Alex Ziebart
Conclusion
DrDamage is a great way to number-crunch with just a little bit of effort, and it might even make you into a die-hard numbers fan. With Cataclysm finally here and instances and dungeons ramping up in difficulty, something like DrDamage could be a powerful tool in your arsenal as you gear up and get ready for the challenges ahead. So give it a shot -- numbers won't hurt you, honest.

Dr. Damage seems like a really great DJ name, doesn't it? There probably already is a DJ named Dr. Damage. If there isn't, go for it, and remember your good buddy Mathew for giving you the idea.
For next week
Next week, I'd like to do another community addon suggestion dealie, so send in your favorite addons updated for Cataclysm, and we can share the love. Tell us your favorite addon and a quick little testimonial! People really seem to enjoy the community recommendations. Send you suggestions to mat@wow.com.

I am not happy with the display of Buffs and Debuffs I currently have. I want something to show Debuffs large, and where I want on the screen. I especially want an obvious counter for how many levels of a Debuff I have, and a preset warning when it gets to say 75 stacks out of 100.
Any suggestions?

The standard buff/debuff mod is Satrina's Buff Frames (or SBF) which allows you to position and change your buff and debuff bars seperatly. It's the end all be all buffbar mod.
Since 4.0, all buff/debuff mods dont allow you to click off buffs anymore though. You have to /cancelaura if you want to get rid of something.

Elkano's, but for the warnings, probably Deadly Boss Mods, as those are encounter-specific.

@Sypher- workarounds are in place for the right-click block. Elkano's currently supports right-clicking buffs to cancel.
Jorges Dec 9th 2010 4:26PM
@Sypher: You can right click buffs and cancel them on X-perl Unit Frames.

Thank You WOW Insider Community!
I will try your suggestions.

When it comes to specific debuffs Tellmewhen will do that for you, also power-auras. Both can do amazing things:)
For the buffs/debuffs both EBB and SBF works fine - i use both as both have an advantage.

This is one of those things that I wish would be addressed by the standard tooltips.
I mean- look at that screenshot for Incinerate. The tooltip says it hits for a maximum of 1000, yet in actuality it hits for an average (with no criticals) of over 3000.
The tooltips give no insight into how spells actually scale, which is one of the reasons I always run to fansites to confirm ability rotations.
Pyromelter Dec 9th 2010 3:42PM
Actually, current tooltips DO show you the actual damage based on your AP/SP. If you look at that tooltip, it says "rank 4" meaning it came before 4.01. Since 4.01, tooltips (assuming you don't have "beginner tooltips) have been showing the proper damage numbers for non critical strike hits.
Check it out on your dudes in game, it should be working like that.

I absolutely LOVE this addon. I've had it for almost a year and there was about a month or so during 4.0.1 where it wasn't working and it was killing me! It's all up to date for Cataclysm now though and working great. It's so awesome to see little displays of the average damage of your abilities on your action bars, it really helps for when you're trying out a new spec or class.

Dude! I used Dr Damage forevers, but it got dropped in like 3.1 or something. So glad it's back! Yay!
Hoten Dec 9th 2010 3:40PM
I know your pain Alex. I wasn't happy to see the tigers either.

Dr. Damage, he has a PHDPS!

At BlizzCon, the Live Raid segment had an interesting bit of display. On the bosses being targeted, there was a number in yellow just above the target tile (above the target's health bar) which showed its realtime incoming DPS. Was this an addon (and if so, what was it) or simply some developer tool Blizzard was using?
Ice Dec 9th 2010 8:08PM
Can be addon even if that was blizz tool.
For example there is addon called deathclock that does just that, clocks the time to targetted, focused or something other to die and how much dps they are taking.
So basically you can target boss and see its taking "50k dps total and it takes 3 minutes to die if that goes on" very handy for enrage or other times that you need to know.
You can also focus the tank and set the addon to show focus deathclock and see that oh, tank is taking 3k dps and would die in 10 seconds with that speed with no heals or so.
As guessed it goes to medium-heavy addon category like recount etc are (well for wooden PCs like mine) depending on group size. As usual recounts and this isnt really memory friendly on 25+ mans
Brainded Dec 9th 2010 4:25PM
By "realtime incoming DPS" I meant the total DPS the entire raid was doing to the target, not just one player at a time.
targetme Dec 9th 2010 5:04PM
How about an add-on that increase the number of spots for a trade window. I mean 6 spots suck when trading like 100 items between friends and guildies.
laina Dec 9th 2010 8:57PM
I'd love a unit frame addon that can show me what each of the group members of my 5-man groups is targeting. I'm currently using Xperl almost solely for this feature, do any others have this capability?
Colerejuste Dec 9th 2010 11:51PM
You can make Pitbull do that too, though it might take a little setting up, with regards to positioning. I used to have it set up fine pre-Shattering, but my party targets template ended up just targetting itself (i.e. First Party member is always targetting the first party member), and I haven't bothered to clean it up yet. Will probably do so before hitting my first Cata instance.
