Scattered Shots: Pre-raid gear for Cataclysm hunters

Last week we covered our pre-heroic gear lists, bringing us up to at least ilvl 329 gear. A bit of grinding, a bit of questions, a sprinkling of gold and a few good drops and we're ready to graduate from normal-mode dungeons to the new, harder-hitting Cataclysm heroics.
We want to be a lot more careful about selecting our ilvl 349 gear than we were with pre-heroic gear. This is the gear that is going to enable us to start killing raid bosses, and in raiding, the small nuances of optimization really start to add up. You absolutely want to enchant and gem this gear with the best possible gems and enchants. You may also want to evaluate your own stat weights using a tool like Zeherah's DPS Analyzer combined with a hefty dose of logic and common sense. That said, the difference between gear of the same ilvl is smaller than ever, thanks to reforging.
So join me after the cut for the complete list of the best gear we can get outside of raids.
Best hunter pre-raid gear
This gear list includes gear available from quests, crafting, reputation rewards, justice points, and heroic mode dungeons. It does not include any profession-specific gear or PvP rewards. I've tried to include several options for each slot, and in general, the items in each slot are listed from best to worst, so the first item (or two) in each slot is your absolute best DPS option. That said, these items are all good, and the difference between the top and bottom of each slot on the short list is small, especially with reforging.
The Wowhead and other databases still have gaps and sometimes buggy information in them, so if you see something that looks out of place, drop a note in the comments and we'll get it fixed (well, after I hit level 85, I'll get to it). In particular, there are a couple of pieces of gear that are listed in the databases without letting us know where they drop.
All of the dungeons referred to here are the heroic versions of those dungeons.

Ranged weapons
The DPS difference between all of our ilvl 346 ranged weapons is very, very small, and really any of these should suit you just fine as you enter the raiding scene. As always, trolls will want to use bows and dwarves will want to use real ranged weapons -- which is to say guns.
Don't forget to toss on the awesome new Gnomish X-Ray Scope.
Use your justice points
The gear that you can purchase with justice points is always a perfectly acceptable item for that slot; they all made it to the top of the short list, even if there's something that might technically be a tiny bit better. In general, you'll want to use your justice points to prop up gear slots where you've been unlucky with drops. So rather than spending all of your justice points as soon as you get them, instead save them up (without capping out on them), and use them for the slots for which you haven't been getting the good drops.
You'll definitely want to pursue those slots without a justice point option first. After all, if you don't get Balker's Waders to drop for your leg slot, you can always purchase equivalent legs. But if you don't get your trinket drops, you just won't have ilvl 346 trinkets to use as you enter raid content.
Tol Barad
You might also want to consider some Tol Barad rep items. This is technically a PvP reward; however, they also have a bunch of daily quests you can do while your faction controls Tol Barad (and others available whether you hold it or not). These are available through the Baradin's Wardens (alliance) or Hellscream's Reach (horde) factions.
Tol Barad offers some nice rewards, including a 2-handed weapon, a trinket, and a crossbow. However, none of them are superior to the items on this list (sadly the epic trinket reward averages worse than the top couple of ilvl 346 trinkets), though they are certainly comparable. So this isn't a faction that you should feel the need to grind, but if you're into PvP and doing the Tol Barad fight when it comes up anyway, it's an alternative source of items for some slots.

As a avid watcher (here) and ex wow player getting back into the game I'm really haveing a hard time with the "new" Hunter. I'm dead last in DPS every run no matter the spec Im in (only level 60ATM.. give me time). Could somebody point me to some good reading for the Hunter with all this new fangled stuff to a player who has been away a long time?

Digest the information, linked from Frostheim's own site, and you'll be doing well:
Cataclysm Hunter Guides
http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/cataclysm-hunter-guides/
That page, if taken as a guide, is probably at least as good as many you'd pay for.
Thanks, Frostheim.

Thanks...another great resource. Looks like I've got some work to do.

Is this list complete and accurate? I got a 346 trink that has an on use 1425 agi proc from a quest , this is for JC only but I just thought it should be listed
Figurine - Demon Panther is it's name

At the Top of the article,
This gear list includes gear available from quests, crafting, reputation rewards, justice points, and heroic mode dungeons. It does not include any profession-specific gear or PvP rewards.

Just wanted to point out the wentletrap vest drops from Ozumat in Heroic Throne of the Tides!

This troll will stick with his gun. I don't need to eke out the relatively insignificant dps increase that using a bow would muster.
It's one of the only choices I've ever made in this game that wasn't minmaxed to hell and back.

Is anyone else very angry about our Meta/Helm situation? The Meta Requirements for our meta gem have yet to be fixed, which is concerning me as my guild gets ready to begin raiding this week. What Meta Gem will people be using until the patch fixes it?Also if you are Engineering like me and most hunters out there, you may have noticed that the 359 engineering goggles with the cogwheel sockets are pretty awesome. So I leveled my engi to max (stupid 6k gold later) and made my helm only to find out that the Crit Cogwheels can not be purchased due to the fact that the item needed to buy the cogwheel is not in the game yet or maybe wont be at all. Anyone have any idea when a patch will be implemented to fix this BS? Is it worth using the Engineering helm with haste cogwheels? seeing as the helm doesnt provide stats outside Agi/Stam and the cogwheels I think it would be a waste to have the little bit more agi and loads of our worst stat, haste. Right now I am using the Dragonmaw clan rep helm but again no useful meta gem.

I am not complaining or anything, Frost I love your articles here and at WHU. Just curious if anyone had seen Kaleki Cloak (http://www.wowhead.com/item=56379) from General Husam in Tol'vir. It has hit on it I know, but also mastery, wouldn't that be better than the haste/hit one above?
Boz Dec 13th 2010 6:37PM
WTB delete button. I am not MM specced anymore >_< mastery is terrible for Survival. No big deal though, gives me an excuse to run more heroics :D
Kilnago Dec 13th 2010 11:08PM
This has probably already been stated, but guardians of hyjal have a pair of epic ilvl 359 legs called Tread of Malorne.

Is there any reason that the Heroic [Hail-Strung Belt] that drops from Altairus in Vortex Pinnacle did not make the list? http://www.wowhead.com/item=56363
As far as I can tell, assuming that one is hit capped (which I actually am without any reforging, enchanting, or gemming) the [Hail-Strung Belt] would be a better option than the [Belt of the Dim Forest]. Even if you aren't hit capped though, a +20 agil, +20 hit would help meet the blue meta requirement and be just a tad worse than the other belt.
It just seems like a strong piece that could easily be worn into raids.
Guntitan Jan 3rd 2011 3:12AM
I got that belt.
Alzira Dec 17th 2010 5:58AM
Just wanted to point out that the neck you get from revered with Guardians of Hyjal has EXACTLY the same stats as the one you listed for Justice Points. Getting revered with Hyjal is very easy, I got it from just finishing the quests. So you might want to save your JP for something else
Icefall Dec 19th 2010 10:15AM
Darkling Staff - Heroic should be on there for 2H
And I think the Xbow from Tol Barad rep is as good as any of those on there. Not sure how it couldn't be, its stats compare and are in some cases better.
Guntitan Jan 3rd 2011 3:28AM
Darkling Staff is a obtainable upgrade coming from one of the easier to complete heroics. Here is the link, http://www.wowhead.com/item=56343. I don't think it made the list because of the hit/mastery combination of secondary stats but I could be wrong. Plus with reforging it wouldn't make much of a difference. You could just reforge hit into crit or mastery.
William Dec 21st 2010 4:04PM
You have any data on how the Tol Barad ones worked out when blowing cooldowns. I'm not saying I'd use it all the time, but on fights like PP in ICC its really handy to have this big buffs on use that use can use with rapid fire.
William Dec 21st 2010 7:54PM
Currently I've got 4 epics, and the rest 346 except for bracers and a non-heroic Tia's Grace (Reforged Crit) Trinket. According to femaledwarf.com I'm actually getting more dps from that then I would the heroic-Grace of the Herald.
yur_ko Dec 22nd 2010 3:10AM
What I wonder, why no word about Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=81716). They are a superior helm in every way. Of course it's limited to engineers and BoP at the same time :( but still engineering isn't uncommon for hunters.
Personally I'm right now sitting on my first Chaos Orb and thinking what's better thing to craft -- this helm or Chicken Splitter... and so far looks like helm is preferable because you can find lvl 346 weapon but no 359 helm...
