"When can I discover the epic items in archaeology?"I just wanted to note that I'm only at Journeyman level (about 120/150) and the next fossil I'm putting together is the Fossilized Hatchling (http://www.wowhead.com/item=60955). So if I can get blues this early, then epics might not require your skill to be maxed. I think it's random with higher chances at higher skill levels.

In beta, I got a BoA lvl 60 purple mage dress (http://www.wowhead.com/item=64643) at 275 or so. Other than lower level stuff that is good for alts, you have to be maxxed and be Surveying Tol'vir stuff to get the 85 epic gear.

How does that work for something like the Hatchling? After you finish assembling an artifact, when it moves you on to the next one, is it just the RNG to determine if your next project will be something like the Hatchling or just another vendor trash? I agree, Arch feels a bit light right now given the time sink involved...

I completed the Hatchling a short time ago and yeah, I was around that level of Archaeology too. I assume most rewards are random but its possible that there may be fixed milestones here and there, for example everyone getting the Hatchling as their next fossil once they pass 100 or so.

i have already gotten a lvl 60, 70, and 80 epic as I was leveling. Currently at 440 and in northrend, so it seems to be very random. The epic axe was the second thing i discovered for Vrykul.

There's been reports of people getting the fossil sksleton drake as their first/second/third artifact. I believe it's a flat % chance. I also read on wowhead that the % to get the mount fossil is ~9%, which seems about right, as you'd need to do ~24 to get to a 90% chance of getting it, which, with the time involved to construct 24 of them seems quite reasonable.

Supposedly, according to wowpedia, there is a limited amount of items you can discover for each "Race" or type. The more important thing, is that they say you WILL NOT get a repeat discovery unless:You have discovered everything for that race.OR if you have discovered everything at you current skill level for that race (ie journeyman, grand master)The random part of archaeology is how SOON you get the rare finds, but you will get them. It is also important to remember, not all races have the same amount of total items. The vrykul for example, have 6 items to discover, and one of them is a epic ax. On the other hand, the dwarves have 29 items to discover, one of them being an epic staff. You could get lucky, and get the staff very early (at the appropriate skill level), but you will definitely get the ax within 6 projects. Hope this helps! You can see the complete list of items sorted by race here:http://www.wowpedia.org/Archaeology_rewards

I think it also has to do with a) what branch the epic item is from, and b) your level (though I can't be sure of this.) I know I had the Dressing Gown well before 300 skill. I've gotten three rares (the hatchling, the gown, and the soul mirror) before heading to Outlands.

Check out the Forum Posting here for basics on Archaeology:http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/1192579343I was totally excited about archaeology and powerleveled to 525 on live, hitting 525 just last night. With getting to 525, I only was able to create 4 rare (non-grey/vendor trash) items: the fossil pet, the fossil mount, the gnome pet and the sword dance item. Pretty crappy to get all the way to 525 and only have that to show off if you ask me. Some points of the post mentioned above along with a few of my thoughts:1) Collect fragments, use them to craft items2) Once you craft an item, it will randomly select another item from that faction for you to create OF THE AVAILABLE ITEMS FOR YOUR APPROPRIATE SKILL LEVEL3) If you have crafted all of the items for that faction at your appropriate skill level, you will craft a 2nd copy of an item4) NONE of the Cataclysm epic level items are available as part of the random draw until you hit a skill of 4505) You CAN'T pick a specific item to make, you have to keep crafting crap and wait for it to randomly come up as craftable and make it then6) The only way to force an item to be crafted, is to craft one of every item of that faction, basically forcing the selector to keep selecting a new item until the one you want pops upI for one have been grinding dwarf fragments like mad in order to get the epic staff. I have 4 potential dwarf items left and haven't gotten it on my crafting list. I'll get my staff, just a matter of getting past the crap to get to the gold.
