I've always had a weak spot for Mad World, even going back to the original Tears for Fears version. So I was pretty excited to see this video featuring a cover of that old favorite. The vocals are by Sacrelige, the video is by Miselain, and the music was performed by Kurari. Jay Mayo did the instrumentals.
The video itself is fairly straightforward. It uses clips from various World of Warcraft cinematics to create a mad world montage. The vocals were actually kind of interesting; I kept expecting it to turn into that screaming, growling performance that's so popular nowadays. Instead, Sacrelige kept the vocals straight.
Overall, I enjoyed the cover and thought the end effect was impressive. I'd like to see more from this team, so here's hoping this collaboration goes somewhere. I believe they ought to take this video and break it down again, you know, start over. I know everybody wants to rule the world with this song, but listening to this cover makes me want to shout, shout at the piercing whininess of this singer's voice. I used listen to this stuff as a kid, so my advice for the young at heart is not to get so head over heals for these impersonators. They're a pale shelter in comparison to the original.
i used to raid with miselain back in the day...so imagine my surprise when i saw her video made the cut!! she's a great gal, and it's good to see her latest project turned out so well! congratulations, michelle!! ;D!
I know Gary Jules did a haunting version of the song. Did not know Tears for Fears did too. Now I do. As for this version. Liked it. Since it was more hard rocking I was waiting for: "When people run in circles its a very effing....mad world." Not a f bomb fan but it would have fit there in this style for this song. Oh well. Still very well done.
The Tears for Fears version is the original, as the song was originally written by their lead singer, Roland Orzabal. All in all, this wasn't a bad cover, but certainly not on par with the Gary Jules version, which is only second to the original.
The video was nice, I suppose, but really didn't make any sense to me, as the conclusion cinematics of Lich King and the opening of Cataclysm have nothing to do with each other - beyond reflecting how "Mad" the world is, I suppose.
I liked the pacing of it, and it really used the cinematic to its advantage, but I would not call this an overly good video.
While the cinematography was great, that is to be expected, it was developed for months by blizzard's best animators, and because it was all cinematics, there is no opportunity for original work. Also, while the tempo and melody match up well with the visuals, the vocals stop making sense once we leave the Lich King. The only line I felt made sense with Deathwing was "happy birthday", as it could symbolize his rebirth to the world of Azaroth.
TLDR: a good video in-and-of itself, but that's t be expected when using already sublime source material.
Most of you have to understand, that this video was put together in about 45 minutes. With editing and throwing it together with the music.. It was all about just having fun. Never once did I take this actual video seriously. And never once did I think it would become this "popular". I know the video is very generic. But as I said, I wasn't expecting it to be on this site, nor on other sites. I do, however, appreciate the positive feedback and even the negative feedback. I welcome criticism, because it helps you do better work and I never get offended.
On a side note, like I said about the video.. It was literally just thrown together. The concept I tried to use, was the Fall of the Lich King to the rise of Deathwing. Maybe it doesn't make sense to most, but, it did in my head. What means the most to me is, that Sacrelige gets his voice heard out in the community of WoW Machinimators and possibly other things. And also for Jay Mayo that put a lot of time and effort into making this song.
I liked the song, and the Lich King part was great I think, but the Deathwing stuff was just sort of "there". I can see what you meant, but if it had had more scene's to the montage perhaps for an overall "mad world", rather than just the two.
Either way, entertained me for it's length, so can't complain. :)
Oh hey, it's never easy doing a cover of such and iconic song and this one was definitely different and interesting. I'm glad you made it and, let's face it, Azeroth IS a pretty Mad World. :)
I really liked this song, the video was ok, would have been cool if it could have encompassed the transitions through other major bosses, granted there isn't really aren't many cinematics for them.
I love this song, and coincidentally was listening to the Tears for Fears "The Hurting" album this morning. The original Tears for Fears version was played at the end of Glory Daze the other night which got me to put it on my iPod.
As for this version, I really liked it. I love the Gary Jules version from Donnie Darko, but this one added a different approach to the song. Gary Jules was slow with a lot of lonesome emotion. Although the voice in this version was heavily modified in the mixing, it takes the anger / evil approach. It reminds me a little of H.I.M's version of Wicked Game, but not as "powerful"; rather more tame.
To me, the music and instrumentals were right on, especially the build-up.
Video was good. I feel that I saw exactly what Miselain was going for, and it matched what she said in her comment above. The Fall of the Lich King with the rise of Deathwing. To me, the song itself is about the never-ending chaos in the world, and the cinematics show this. Although one chaotic mess comes to an end, another one will always follow.
As a side not, even with the Gary Jules version, I just don't know if anyone knows how to sing the word "funny" without it sounding out of place.
That version of that song is TERRIBLE. The sharpness of the chimey strings contrasted against the whiny, wavering (looking for the key or doing it on purpose?) vocals literally made my head hurt.

I for one LOVED it. And this cover of the song was AWESOME!

While I liked the video, I really hated the voice. Some voices just aren't for singing and this was one of them.

One of my most favorite songs, actually. Always makes me think of Donnie Darko, though. Not a bad video, overall.

The link provided to Kurari in the article doesn't work. Not sure about the others, I was most interested in the how the music was done...
