WoW Rookie: Top 5 tricks for grouping in Vashj'ir

Have I ever mentioned that I'm incredibly fortunate to play WoW with my wife? It's a subtle, wonderful thing. And because I worship this wonderful creature, all of my journey to level 85 on my paladin is being spent in a group with her. Our first foray into Cataclysm's new content was the underwater realm of Vashj'ir. It seemed like a romantic way to spend time: dodging sharks, making appropriate crab jokes, and exploring new content.
The thing you need to know is that Vashj'ir is a three-dimensional zone. You don't only run around on the ground; you can also swim up and down. That's not a terribly complicated issue for instances like the Oculus, but those three dimensions turn into pains in the neck when you're trying to do a hundred quests as a pair. If you're leveling in a group with more than one person, it gets even more confusing. It's easy to lose track of where groupmates are hiding out and where quest mobs are swimming. And many areas of Vashj'ir have an "upper" and a "lower" level. If you're doing all this as a group, you'll need coordination.
Here are our top 5 tricks for working as a group in Vashj'ir.
Use raid markers. The group leader can set raid markers above each group member's head. (I used a skull for my wife and the red X for myself.) These raid markers can be seen through most objects, and they stand out from Vashj'ir's beautiful scenery.- Make use of voice chat. While admittedly, I play in the same room as my wife and we can talk to each other easily, larger groups will need something like Mumble or Ventrilo. This lets you communicate more easily than trying to type out "I'm by the fish!" in group chat 300 times.
- Stick together. Even using voice chat and raid markers, it's incredibly easy to get lost in Vashj'ir. It's a huge zone with hundreds of interesting nooks and crannies. You can get lost in it for hours, just looking around at all the sights. If you're trying to keep your group together, don't get separated when farming or turning in quests. By making the compact to stick together, you'll save yourself a lot of frustration when you don't have to search around every corner to find lost group mates.
- Do the same quests. Like most zones, a lot of Vashj'ir quests include picking up dropped items from dead mobs. Since the drops are generally random, group members will finish the quests at different rates. Don't turn in your quest until everyone's done; there are many phased quests in this zone. If you turn in at different rates, you may find yourself in different phases.
- Complete the zone in order. There are well over 100 quests in Vashj'ir. They are very nicely organized in a relatively linear storyline, making the cruise through the underwater realm fun and interesting. Try and follow the quest progression together; if someone jumps ahead, you'll play heck getting back on the same page.

Memories of last night playing wow with my husband.."are you up or down", "I can't see you" "I'm on the sand, look down", "I'm ON the sand, I still can't see you!"
Khanmora Dec 9th 2010 4:19PM
hahahaha! This sounded just like our house.
Me: "Target me. It will highlight me so you can see me."
Him: "I still can't see you. Why do you drive so erratically?"
We also told about a gajillion crab jokes.
Parrin Dec 9th 2010 4:48PM
I'm next to the crab. Look for the big crab; I'm right next to it...

See, this is why the spousal unit and I only duo for Molten Core. "Agh where are you going?" "That's MY ore!" "Come over HERE where the quest is!" "Those are the wrong mobs!" I don't know if raid markers would actually help, since what we both really want is mind control.

I think these are all great tips.
I started in Vashj'ir as well (alone) and it was stressful enough trying to do the quests quickly to keep up with friends in others zones. In the end I had to leave as they were out pacing me dramatically.
This zone is a BEAUTIFUL and FUN, however if you are looking to push to 85 fast or just do not like questing in general, this probably is not for you.
I do suggest that everyone take 20 mins and get the Seahorse Mount as it is awesome!

The seahorse mount is great. I thought some of the joke were bad and then I got to the case of crabs quest.........

I'll second the raid markers. My husband and I also play together, and being able to see the yellow star above his toon's head was a life-saver sometimes(literally, he's the healer, I'm the tank :P)!

I still wonder when Blizzard is going to take a hint from other games with 3 full axes of movement and turn the party dots into triangles or something when they're significantly above or below you.

only thing i hate is the getting ganked from a caster in the sea weed.
literally one time i was just standing there trying to find the guy who is attacking me

My BF and I play from the same room. The scene was something like this:
Him: Oh for f.. stop respawning! I'm gonna die!
Me: Where are you? I'm right next to you on the map but i cant find you. I'm trying to target your target.
Him: Well I'm dead now. Don't bother.
Me: Don't release I can raise you. Where is your body?
Him: Just look at my screen.
Me: Okay .. AAHH!! Where did all these naga come from. *faces melt* Okay now where are you?
Him: I already ran back.
Fffff..

As a rogue my wife just can handle the 3D'ness (is that even a word). In fact I think she went as far as to say 'I hate this (multiple expletives deleted) zone'.
Hence the fact that my druid is now questing on My Hyjal with her rogue and my paladin is loving Vashj'ir in all its 3D'ness (there i did it again, must be a word).
Surtur Dec 9th 2010 4:43PM
There needs to be a disclaimer at the start fo the zone for partying with relationship partners.
"Warning: Questing with a significant other in this zone may cause you to be sleeping on the couch tonight"

@Surtur Hilarious footnote!
Hawkyn Dec 9th 2010 4:36PM
Actually the raid markers are not a bad idea for doing any of the zones ... especially when your quest giver is buried under a wave of dragon riders all trying to get the same quest you are and your group-mates are asking where you are.
Vogie Dec 9th 2010 5:42PM
Raid markers are a godsend for quests. I have an add-marker onhand that i made for Pilgrim's bounty last year for turkeys, and it helps in so many situations. Hit a button, oh look, my target is behind that tree. Or pile of seaweed. Or all of them are dead.
If there only was a way to speed up the macro editing process... I'm sure there's an addon for that, but I run really light on my laptop.

i recently got my girlfreind playing as well and i found that using the raid markers helped her alot while we leveled because i think she has the sense of direction of a blade of grass. i'm dreading the day she steps into Vashj'ir, she hasnt started playing cata yet cuz she has her finals to do but when she does, oh god help me.
about the seahorse mount, is it faster than the sea turtle? i have a mount addon that selects mounts randomly for me so im wondering if i should tell it to ignore the sea turtle.
i know the sea horse says something like 435% but the turtle just says "swim faster"

How did you manage to get your g/f to play? I've been dying to find a way to convince my g/f! Help! lol.
lemur Dec 9th 2010 6:21PM
@david
Let her fool around with character creation, and don't rag on her if she chooses a race/class you don't like. It helps a lot.
/was introduced to WoW by her boyfriend
Trinea Dec 9th 2010 7:45PM
@ lemur- Yep, that's how I got hooked. At first, he tried the "Here's MY character and all his spells"...upon which time I promptly said "...yeah, screw that game. It's too complicated." (He plays a shammy, btw, and this was just after BC launch) After a while, I decided to just sit down and play with making my own, and once I did that I was hooked.
PS- No, my first rolled character was -not- a belf. XD
Taurens ftw.

Show her the blood elves, that is what roped me in.
