Protection warrior PvP - Ever since Blizzard made the decision to make all specs viable for PvP, things have just been getting better for protection warriors. With rated battlegrounds in
Cataclysm, tanks have a solid place on the battlefield, holding down key points and carrying flags.
Shield Slam makes protection warriors one of the select specs that have offensive magical dispels, and with so much mitigation talents, protection will fit right in with the new combat environment of the expansion.
- Toughness - Resilience simplified to its current form, there's better value in most mitigation talents including Toughness, which grants higher armor. The removal of armor penetration from the game makes this a decent investment even at three points.
- Shield Specialization - You will block attacks and you will most definitely Spell Reflect harmful spells, so you might as well get some rage out of it (60 rage isn't anything to sneeze about, either).
- Shield Mastery - It's not as if protection is starved for mitigation, but Shield Mastery makes those special cooldown abilities usable more frequently. You'll like the fact that you can Spell Reflect every 7 seconds. Your opponents won't. Consider activating Glyph of Spell Reflection (major) to bring that cooldown down even further to 6 seconds.
- Gag Order - Still an awesome PvP ability, Gag Order gives protection warriors two short cooldown silence spells, with one that can be used on targets at long range. That's pretty scary for opposing casters.
- Last Stand - Typically considered a PvE talent, the bonus health works well in tanking situations such as when being focused upon as a flag carrier. With proper communication with healers on your team, this talent goes a long way towards keeping you alive.
- Concussion Blow - Although the damage component of this ability has been nerfed, it's still a 5 second stun every 30 seconds and it only costs 15 rage. One of the best PvP talents in the tree for just one point.
- Bastion of Defense - With resilience no longer reducing critical hit chance, talents like Bastion of Defense gains more value. Sure it only affects melee attacks, but it's not like protection needs any more tools to bring casters to their knees.
- Warbringer - Such a beautiful talent for PvP, allowing protection warriors to forgo the stance dance, granting them superior mobility. The talent has been nerfed, however, with only Intervene retaining the root and snare break, making it highly conditional. Still an important talent and it only takes one point.
- Devastate, Impending Victory, and Sword and Board - Devastate is listed only because you'll need it to pick up Impending Victory, which allows you to use Victory Rush even before killing your opponent, and Sword and Board, which gives you a chance at proccing a free Shield Slam.
Expect protection warriors to excel in PvP, especially in rated battlegrounds where groups will probably have at least one tank. Warriors are still susceptible to snares and roots, but as always have the means to close the distance. The specs feel balanced across the board, and with the nerf to Mortal Strike, it no longer feels mandatory to have an arms warrior on the team. Generally, every spec can be viable in PvP, so pick a warrior playstyle that suits you and go bash people's heads in. Next week, we conclude this series with a look at warlocks, then off to rated battlegrounds!

*Pokes spouse* Wake up honey! Wake up and level your Prot warrior, the Arena season starts tomorrow!
Superthrust Dec 12th 2010 4:37PM
I want my anti-snares/roots back. On my pvp server, EVERY one of my deaths has been to some druid or mage using Frost Nova or Roots.
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 3:35AM
Put Intervene on a mouseover macro. It's not as good as being able to break out of a root with Charge, but if you've got someone in your raid/party in range, it still works. This is what I use (it tries first a friendly mouseover, then a friendly target, then a friendly target-of-target):
#showtooltip Intervene
/cast [@mouseover,help,exists][help][@targettarget, help, exists] Intervene

@Sleutel - ....I love you...
HOPE THIS WORKS! I usually end up pvping alone :(
And also, i doubt this works for fury or arms...btw, which is "better" for pvp?
Rufin Feb 2nd 2011 10:32AM
Its Arms no doubt. i personally roll Fury tho and i can still kick some serious ass. Ive even killed those Arms warrs (its hilarious. they try to snare me while im wailing on them. cant they see im a melee too?)
Superthrust Feb 2nd 2011 3:29PM
wont matter anymore after next patch...no more stance-dancing. :( Way to kill warriors, bliz. Why not just delete the class and turn the current ones into DK's...

This article has highlighted a problem I have: I love Prot too much. Warriors are one of my favorite classes, and every time I look over Arms or Fury, I think to myself, you know what, I should really give those specs a try. So I roll an alt, and maybe I run around with a two-hander or a couple one-handers for a couple levels, but inevitably I always end up strapping a shield on. Arms and Fury have lots of fun toys I'd love to try out, but I just can't say no to Prot.
I'm probably gonna roll a Horde warrior again soon, probably a goblin. And like my current human warrior, he will almost certainly end up dual-specced prot.

I stink at PVP. :)

"Such an awesome talent to have, despite the low, 10 rage cost of Pummel and Shield Bash, both of which can now be used in Battle Stance. That's so stupidly good, it made warriors cry happy tears. Never mind that you'll have to swap out into a shield for Shield Bash,"
This is an absolutely bizarre comment. Pummel and Shield Bash share a cooldown--why would you waste a GCD equipping a shield to use SB instead of just using Pummel?
"Rude Interruption - You'll be interrupting spells, anyway, so put two points into a talent that makes the most out of it."
There's no need to put two points here for PvP: 2nd point doesn't increase your damage--it just makes the buff last longer. If you're up against any casters at all, you'll be keeping your interrupt on cooldown, so the buff won't have a chance to fall off until the caster is dead.
I also also can't believe that of all the Prot Talents, you didn't even mention Safeguard (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=46949)--a straight-up PvP talent outside of a tiny handful of PvE fights.
This whole article has a feeling of something rushed out by someone who doesn't know the Warrior class very well.
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 3:13AM
Also, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which general damage-generating talents are mentioned, outside of the PvP utility ones. For example, you mention Sudden Death but not Bladestorm.
I understand that a general PvP writer isn't going to be equally experienced with all classes, but these really seem like errors and omissions that could easily have been avoided by (a) basic research and (b) running the article by one of the Warrior writers first.
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 3:29AM
Also, you can't have the "must-have" Talents be 99% of all three trees. That's just not useful or helpful. Just screwing around and not having a lot of PvP experience, this is what I would suggest as a PvP build for each spec:
Arms: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#LrbfcMbRurkurzo
Fury: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#LG0fZGrzsszkMfd (Swap TG for SMF as desired)
Prot: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#LMbZG00oZcfhdRRobru (Swap Piercing Howl for 1/2 Rude Int as desired)
Ice Dec 13th 2010 4:17AM
You use shield bash when you are supporting the kill and not head to head with opponent.
But why use shield bash then? Well because..
Shield bash: "dazing them (...) prevents any spell in that school from being cast for 6 sec."
Pummel: "preventing any spell in that school from being cast for 4 sec."
"2nd point doesn't increase your damage--it just makes the buff last longer"
Agreed on this, even tho its good for (rated) BGs where you might have to find enemy and it doesnt always come up in 15 seconds time. Consider what you do to pick or not pick it.
"mention Sudden Death but not Bladestorm."
Isnt most of those talents like "31 pointer" no-brainer? Not to sound rude of course but if someone needs to be told that bladestorm needs picking up for pvp/pve..well you know.
I'm sure everyone would pick it anyway.
Theres 39 talents on each tree, does he really have to write about 100 talents for each class because they rhyme with talent x that or the other clearly states it rhymes with it?
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 4:37AM
@Ice:
1.) Is two extra seconds of lockout plus a Daze really worth losing two GCDs (one to equip the shield, one to re-equip your 2H)?
2.) The title of the article is "Must-have PvP talents." Most, if not all, of them should be no-brainers.
3.) No, he doesn't have to write about 100 talents. That is, in fact, one of my problems with this article. Instead of listing the "must-have" talents, it feels like he went down a list and commented on the possible PvP applications of most of them, but with no real reasoning behind which ones he picked, with some Talents with excellent PvP applications ignored (Bladestorm, Safeguard, Shockwave). I would rather have seen (a) a much smaller list, (b) an actual run-down of every single talents with comments on its usefulness in PvP, or (c) a specific suggested PvP build for each spec with commentary as to why particular talents were chosen.
Zach Dec 13th 2010 5:00AM
@Sleutel - As Ice mentioned, Shield Bash confers a daze effect as well as an additional 2 seconds of school lock-out, so you COULD opt to Shield Bash instead of Pummel. I ran this through a warrior friend of mine, but I suppose some things fell through the cracks.
I should've mentioned that 2 points in Rude Interruption is actually attractive to Protection for sub-speccing. At any rate, good feedback is good feedback, so thank you.
@Ice and Sleutel - I don't mention 31 point talents in most of the specs covered in this series because yes, as Ice mentioned, these are no-brainer talents that you should pick up, anyway. However, Sleutel is right in that I SHOULD have mentioned Bladestorm not because it's a DPS ability but because I neglected to highlight its immunity to crowd control, which really comes into play in PvP.
Emophia Dec 13th 2010 10:05PM
A lot of times against caster's you;ll be in a shield anyways due to the need of spell reflection or shield wall so the rageless shield bash does come in handy, but ye it shares a CD with pummel and in every other situation you;'d use pummel.
As for him running it past the warrior writer, Matt Rossi is an awesome writer for PVE warriors but I wouldn;t ask him anything about PVP if my life depended on it.
Also your Arms spec are freaking terrible, no offence, Executioner, no Sweeping strikes? and no Drums of war? really? loooooooooooooool.
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 10:32PM
@Emophia: That's just the point, I'm putting this out of my ass because I don't PvP, but now it gives us *something to discuss*, versus just a list of talents that comprise 90% of each tree.
zoom Dec 13th 2010 3:25PM
fury v. arms? I keep asking seasoned pvp warriors this question and their response usually is "go arms, of course" which doesn't say much. as far as i can tell, both specs now seem viable.
anyone care to share a detailed comparison?
Emophia Dec 13th 2010 9:53PM
lol furry isn;t anywhere near as viable as arms.
Sleutel Dec 13th 2010 10:36PM
Wasn't Emophia nice and detailed?
Clasically, Arms has been the better PvP spec, as I understand it, because of Mortal Strike, bleeds, and utility talents, with Mortal Strike being the big one. The healing debuff received a massive nerf with the tree redesigns, but Arms still has the most talents with PvP utility.
