There'll be no end. As long as 12 million (or even 1 million) people keep paying $14 a month, Blizzard will think of new people to kill, new rats, new kobolds, new zones, weapons, models, factions, mounts, textures, lore and dare I say it - mechanics.
Ultimately, you're a rat in a maze and the exit - should you find it each expansion - leads to another maze where your efforts count for nothing unless you actually enjoyed getting to the end and /or killing other rats of the opposing faction on your way out.
No doubt people have an eye on what will come after Deathwing... but they're still partially back in TBC... checking to see which of their ZG/BWL/MC purples they need to replace with that blue BoE dagger/cloak/hat. And now, years later, we're doing the same thing with ICC epics.
It doesn't take long to get Loremaster of Cataclysm. Afrer that, it's ANOTHER endless gear chase and rep grind for $14 a month until we get new quests. :/

Good thing for me I actually have fun playing for the sake of playing. :)
I don't care who the last boss is. I was surprised when they announced cataclysm and I hope I'm equally surprised by the last expansion.

I actually like this never-ending maze. I mean, the content is all cool and stuff, but the people who you play it with really make a difference.
Not to mention, if you don't like it, Blizzard isn't making you play (or pay).
