Interact with target keybind gets you past players atop NPCs

To set this keybind, bring up World of Warcraft's main Options menu (hitting Escape will bring it up), go to the Key Bindings menu, scroll down to Targeting Functions, and you should be able to find the option easily. You can also set an Interact With Mouseover key bind if you so choose. If you've never customized your key bindings before, be careful about the key you choose to bind to these functions. You don't want to overwrite other crucial keybinds accidentally.
Once your Interact With Target key is set, you no longer need to worry about crowds or mammoths. Just /target who you want to interact with and hit the appropriate key. It will bring up the dialogue prompt, and you're set.

Yes true, but sometimes even then you can't click on it. Plus there are other NPCs, such as flight masters, with no such icon. I mean, do you *really* use every single key on your keyboard in combat?
I initially used this feature when using the now-eliminated spot in Stormwind where you could stand in one spot and check both the AH and the mailbox. A macro /tar (the auctioneer's name), and a keybind to interact with target, and you could check the AH while standing outside in front of the mailbox. *sigh* I miss that feature. They moved the auctioneers in 4.0 :(

Sometimes there are so many people on top of the target that you can't even see the ! or ?.
And in mixed faction areas, some jerk *cough alliance cough* will invariably flag themselves in hopes that they'll get accidentally clicked. So this is a perfect alternative.

^ This. During the cata pre-release event, Goon Squad stuck like three gigantic mammoths on top of the main quest giver, and a few more+a mole machine on top of one of the book/text things you needed to pick up, making quest completion impossible.
The night Cata was released, Goon Squad stuck so many gigantic mammoths on top of the Riding Trainer chick in org that you could not see any part of her. Oh, and just to make it completely impossible, one of them renamed their hunter pet the same name as the Riding Trainer so when you typed /tar name you had a chance of targeting the pet instead.

Thank you! I wish I had known about this on Cata release day. There must have been over 100 people standing on top of the flight trainer in Stormwind. I was getting so frustrated with my inability to open a dialog and buy old world flight training, I went searching the web for a /command to do it. Evidently that's not allowed, and also evidently...no one knows about this interact with target key bind. That's brilliant! Thanks so much!

Some people did blog about this before cata released in an attempt to make the whole leveling process easier. >.>

You should also report them. If someone is blocking access to an NPC they are in violation of Blizzard's harassment policy.

I somehow don't think that policy is designed for the mad rush that was the cataclysm launch.
Xaklo Dec 15th 2010 8:34PM
I'm sure leveling warlocks are singing praises for this as well. Can we also report our own Voidwalkers too?

Any chance of something similar for Fishing Bobbers?
Bamsen Dec 15th 2010 10:04PM
Well you cannot target the bobber. Maybe the mouse-over keybinding will work. But I'm not sure how much use that would be.
Rad Dec 15th 2010 8:25PM
You can also turn on nameplates and right-click that, that's what I've always done. O:

Shift+V FTW
Saeadame Dec 15th 2010 11:31PM
I commented on someone else that said this, but that doesn't work when there's 200+ people standing in the same area, which was the case with an incident I had. Not only were there multiple giant mammoths, one of the hunter's pet was re-named to be the same name as the NPC. I tried to turn on nameplates, and my entire screen just got filled with constantly subtly shifting nameplates.
It was super suck.
Drob10 Dec 15th 2010 8:43PM
Another quick easy way is to zoom your camera view all the way in to 1st person view, then you'll be able to see inside all those mammoths to where the npc is now livinng.
Who knew mammoths and dragons don't need innards...
Drakkenfyre Dec 15th 2010 10:59PM
What always seems off to me are vanilla races when they swim in a robe. Aim the camera under them, and they have no legs. They have no bodies. They are just completely hollow, with just a pair of feet at the bottom. You can see all the way up thru them thru the robe.
Prelimar Dec 15th 2010 8:45PM
this is the best tip i've ever read here. you are a GOD to me now!
InsaneAssault Dec 15th 2010 8:46PM
This is a nice FU to all those flagged opposite faction players in hoping that you'll right click them by accident and get the local guards on you.
emberdione Dec 15th 2010 8:49PM
Mmo Champ had this on the top of their page on launch night. I immediately bound it to my ; key and went to level in Hyjal.
The entire night people kept whispering me going, "How did you manage to click on them?!?! There were like 50 mammoths!!!" It helped me get ahead of the crowd quite easily.
Also, if the chick at the end of Stonecore falls in her altar, you can target her using /tar then using this. Bam, "lost" loot recovered.
This *really* needs to be a game tip on a loading screen. Worth it's weight in gold.
Muse Dec 15th 2010 11:18PM
We had to resort to the lootarang in Stonecore, because she was just too far away, but it was the first thing we tried.
emberdione Dec 16th 2010 12:52PM
You have to run up to the back of her altar and run against it back and forth. There is one little sweet spot where you can reach her. :)
But the lootarang is a great idea too.
