Addon Spotlight: Minimal Archaeology

Greetings, friends. I trust Cataclysm content has been as fun for you as it has for me? Finally having settled in, I've started to power through my trade skills and new professions. Archaeology was something I purposefully abstained from in the beta, mostly because it was the piece of new content I wanted to experience fresh. So after reaching 85 and heading off on new archaeological adventures, I was instantly hooked.
My inbox is an odd mix of awesome addon suggestions and UI submissions for Reader UI of the Week, and every so often little, pieces of perfection make their way to my heart. Minimal Archaeology takes the essence of the awesome archaeology interface and transcribes it on a simple window with simple commands.
Just the facts, ma'am
Minimal Archaeology is the simplest of addons, designed to let you quickly see how many of each type of fragment you currently have from digging. Conveniently located next to each fragment bar is a Solve button, allowing you to quickly hit Solve once the number of required fragments is reached. Minimal Archaeology is archaeology without the lore.
Now, before you light up the torches and brandish the pitchforks you have from the last time I said something stupid, Minimal Archaeology does not intend to replace the archaeology interface. Rather, the addon is a complimentary screen that is a quick way to see what types of fragments you currently have, as well as quickly solve artifacts. I use Minimal Archaeology while I'm grinding out archaeology, when I just want to quickly solve pieces rather than navigating to them. It's not a huge burden, navigating through the excellent archaeology UI -- but sometimes I prefer things at a glance, so Minimal Archaeology is a nice tool for me.
Minimal thinking
Which brings me to the real topic that I wanted to throw down at you guys and gals today -- a topic that came to me while looking for this week's addon for Addon Spotlight. There are elements of World of Warcraft that are fairly complex and others that, on their face and in practice, are simple to grasp.
Addons that take the complicated UI elements out of the way of the user are, to me, inspired -- not because I don't enjoy or appreciate the default Blizzard UI, because I very much do enjoy and appreciate it, especially the new UI elements from Cataclysm. What I also appreciate, however, is that there is a market of addon creators and authors out there who understand the language Blizzard is talking and strip away the unnecessary verbage. Minimal Archaeology is an example of an addon whose pretext is actually a lack of pretext. The whole point of the addon is to strip away the substance of archaeology and give you a number and a button, to turn the act of the profession into an information piece manageable in a different way than reading about the artifacts and their history. The Blizzard UI does this wonderfully, and it makes me long for the Tome of Knowledge from Warhammer Online that Blizzard is slowly inching toward (with great reverence from me, since the Tome of Knowledge was an incredibly inspired piece of gameplay for Warhammer Online, and it should be replicated everywhere it can be).
My point is that I'm glad that these two separate worlds can exist. I can have the numbers game and the fragments bar with a quick solve click. I can also have the lore and the explanations and pretty pictures provided for me. The freedom of choice is what makes World of Warcraft's interface so fluid and the interface design team at Blizzard so forward-thinking and praiseworthy -- we are given choice where no choice is necessary.

Shall we take a question or two from the mail bag?

Hello. I am looking for a good mail managment addon. I need to send mass mail to all my guildies and would rather not do it one by one. Any help?
Gerogero, Vashj
Postal is as tried and true as they get for mail addons that give you plenty of new mail functionality.
However, mass mailings have gone extinct for the most part, since Blizzard introduced new throttling measures of the auction house and the mail system. Necramar, the manager and author of MassMailer (one of my old favorites) put it better than I could on MassMailer's WowAce page. Mass mailers are sadly dead, and hopefully Blizzard will add in some limited mass mail functionality in the future.
Everyone asked for this. I've not had so many requests for a tutorial than I have with Quantus' UI from this week. So, in the interest of not having you all break down my door and take me hostage, I'm putting together a guide for it. Look for it soon as part of Reader UI of the Week.Everyone in the world asked:
I love the most recent Reader UI of the Week! It's SpartanUI but it doesn't take up so much screen space! How do I do that!?
The response has been amazing, which shows that the talented guys over at SpartanUI have awesome art and aesthetics on their hands and they know it, and they should totally come out with a "lite" version of the UI mod. They'd be doing me a favor, that's for damn sure.

Perhaps since CC is the big thing with running instances, you could feature some helpful tools for managing it?
PugLAX is my new favorite addon for Cata Heroic groups. A few clicks and you have everything assigned. It's wonderful. http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info18561-PugLax.html
Now to find a CC breaker tattletale addon for people who break my frogs.

BigBrother addon has worked for years as a tattletale on CC breaking. It also helps with raid leading and making sure people have all their flasks and food buffs on.

I use Opie for marking, & Skada has a function to report CC breakers.
QQinsider Dec 17th 2010 9:48AM
Don't all of the popular dps meter addons have CC breaker functionality? Pretty sure that Recount and Skada do.

I actually recommend 2 different mods, they do different jobs. Archy, which supports TomTom basically point you to the next dig site plus tracking of different relics.
SAL, which an triangulation tool for finding the actual artifact. Don't worry if the line doesn't appears to line up to your point view. It works well for me.
szilagyi Dec 16th 2010 6:33PM
Are they both Curse?
BigFire Dec 16th 2010 6:34PM
Both Archy and SAL are on curse.
kaos95 Dec 16th 2010 6:36PM
I also have to plug archy, it seriously improves the experience of archaeology

I just read about Archy here:
http://wowdigsite.com/2010/12/need-addon-try-archy/
I would have liked the idea of Minimal Archaeology more if I literally hadn't come to this article after reading the Archy one. Interaction with TomTom? Show's sites on the mini-map? Yes, please!

Anyone try Clever Archaeologist yet? http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info18992-CleverArchaelogist.html

I've been using Archy ever since I first found it and honestly I like it better than the one shown here. With Arch I get to see at a glance what all dig sites are available, it I don't feel like using TomTom for some reason it also adds the dig sites to my minimap, and after I dig a site once it's race is archived so the next time that spot pops up I can see what I'm getting there. It also keeps track (again, at a glance) of what artifacts I'm working on and how many keystones I have to help solve them. A recent update to it has also started marking where I actually loot a find, and since the actual spots are specific spots it actually works to help find artifacts more accurately.
I have to say at this point the best addon for overall Archaeology IMHO is Archy. Hands down.
Pfooti Dec 17th 2010 12:13AM
Yeah, I've tried both MA and Archy- I prefer Archy. They're both okay, though.
Also, gathermate2 will note archaeology nodes as well- this is really handy since there seems to be a finite number of spawn locations.
szilagyi Dec 16th 2010 6:33PM
Any addon out there that serves to help triangulate the distances, ala the excellent coordinate tracking/rangefinding in Questhelper and it's progeny?
Because I'm sure like many, I adore the simple fun of going around and digging in this profession, but sweet baby C'thun is it a grind. I would love to be able to turn off my brain while hopping from place to place and every 30 yards to focus on guild chatter and the like.

I installed and used minimal archaeology just the other day and had a major issue with it. That being, Keystones were not working properly. I couldn't attach keystones and when I did, it switched from Night Elf to Troll and wouldn't actually apply it. Taking off the addon and restarting wow cleared the problem right up. perhaps i had an older version (but I'm pretty sure it was current). Just thought I'd share.
Sounds like i should check out Archy and SAL
thanks!

When I read the title it made me think of this simple macro I put together to get both the archaeology skills onto one button, Just hold shift to open your book...
#showtooltip
/cast [nomod] Survey; [mod:shift] Archaeology;
oisteink Dec 18th 2010 6:47AM
Swap them around and you only need to use one conditional ;)

Does Conditioner still work, or is there a replacement for Cataclysm? I loved not having to clog my screen up with raid frames.
Sathias Dec 16th 2010 7:53PM
Does anyone know of an add-on which will warn you before accepting a group invite that you are currently in a dungeon queue? With my mage several times lately I have forgotten and accepted a group invite so I can port someone, and wasted half an hour of being in queue.
Sicadastra Dec 16th 2010 8:26PM
I recall reading somewhere about an addon in the works for hunters to manage their new raid-buff-pets. The intent was to scan your party/raid, determine specs and who can give what, and suggest the optimal pets for the gaps. The author was still working on it and I wasn't able to DL, but for the life of me I can't remember the name or where I saw it.
Any ideas?
