Scattered Shots: Beast mastery hunter 101

Over and above everything else, hunters are known as the pet class. No one loves their pets the way hunters do, no one has the pet selection that we do, and no one's pets bring as much to the raid as our pets do. Other classes have tried to emulate the bond between hunter and pet, starting with the warlocks -- who, between their goth makeup and Twilight posters, have completely failed to grasp the true meaning of a lifelong companion. Mages, death knights, shaman -- they've all tried to be more like us hunters, and they have all failed.
Of all hunter specs, beast mastery hunters are closest to their pets, and in Cataclysm, they even rely on their pet to deliver the signature shot of their rotation. They are rewarded for this trust with an even wider selection of pets and raid buffs, making them irresistible to the opposite sex -- or indeed, any sex.
Join me after the cut for another massive collection of hunter information as we take a look at the Cataclysm BM hunter and cover the BM raid spec, glyphs, rotation, gems, and stats.
BM talent spec
Like all Cataclysm hunters, the newly shortened talent tree for BM offers fewer selections, making it much harder to make poor talent choices. Once we hit the bottom of the BM tree, we're going to want to move over to the MM tree to pick up the very desirable pet DPS talents hidden there.

It's probably worth mentioning that the theoretical BM build of putting talents into Improved Steady Shot and trying to weave Cobra Shots and Steady Shots together turns out not to be a good choice for BM. Not only does Steady Shot do less damage than Cobra Shot, but the rotation becomes incredibly complex, and it's impossible to keep full uptime on the imp steady buff.
BM glyphs
As always, our prime glyphs are our really good DPS options, though BM also gets a DPS gain through its major glyph, Glyph of Bestial Wrath. For most of the BM major and all the minor glyphs, however, there is no clear DPS gain option, and you can really take whatever glyphs suit your playstyle the best. There are several utility options that are beneficial, so for those slots, choose the ones you think will work for you the best.
Prime glyphs
Glyph of Serpent Sting and Glyph of Kill Shot are both good glyphs, and the DPS gain of the two are very similar for BM hunters -- in fact, they're close enough that which is better depends on your exact gear setup. When two glyphs are that close, it really becomes a matter of preference, so use the one you like best. If you really want to get down to the nitty-gritty, you'll probably net a bit more DPS from the Glyph of Serpent Sting; its benefits are more consistent than the Kill Shot glyph.
Major glyphs
- Glyph of Bestial Wrath
- Your choice
- Your choice
Choose whatever minor glyphs you like the best. I'm personally fond of the Glyph of Mend Pet and Glyph of Feign Death. Mend Pet in particular is a lovely quality of life improvement, and with it, you'll no longer have to carry pet food around.
BM rotation
Like all hunter specs in Cataclysm, BM's rotation is priority-based. You want to use whatever shot is available and is highest on the priority list, while at the same time making sure to save up enough focus so that you can always hit Kill Command as soon as it's available.
You will of course want to be in Aspect of the Hawk and put up Hunter's Mark and Serpent Sting. You should only need to apply Serpent Sting once; thereafter, Cobra Shot will refresh it indefinitely.
You'll only want to hit Focus Fire when your pet has 5 stacks of Frenzy, and the game will warn you when this happens (see the hunter spell alerts guide). Focus Fire is not on the global cooldown, so it costs you no time to hit. Kill Command is your primary "signature" shot that you want to be sure to hit on cooldown; however, be aware that it will only work if your pet is within range of the target.
Of course, the other big part of the BM rotation are the BM cooldowns, Bestial Wrath and Fervor.
You'll want to use Bestial Wrath early and often -- just make sure your pet is at the target first. In general, you want to make sure you're fairly high on focus before hitting big red pet so you don't have to waste any time with Cobra Shot. The big advantage of Bestial Wrath is the focus cost reduction of your shots. As long as you're fairly high on focus, you should be able to get two Kill Commands and five to six Arcane Shots all in a row -- which is a massive amount of burst DPS.
As soon as Bestial Wrath ends, don't forget to immediately Cobra Shot to keep your Serpent Sting from falling off. You'll also want to use Fervor as often as possible. Basically, what this cooldown is doing is giving you a couple of extra Arcane Shots. In some boss fights, it could be a good idea to save this for times where you know you're going to be focus-starved (like heavy movement phases), but by default, you just want to use it every chance you can to burn a chunk of Arcane Shots in a row.
BM gems
Like all hunter specs, agility is your best stat -- even better than hit. Because of this, you do not want to gem for hit (except the Glinting Demonseye to satisfy your meta requirement). Instead, you'll want to reforge for hit and gem for agility as much as you can. Here's the breakdown:
- Meta Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond
- Red socket Delicate Inferno Ruby
- Yellow socket (if socket bonus is 10 agility or 20 of another stat) Deadly Ember Topaz
- Yellow socket (if socket bonus is worse than the above) Delicate Inferno Ruby
- Blue socket (one for meta requirement) Glinting Demonseye
- Blue socket (if socket bonus is 20 agility or better) Glinting Demonseye
- Blue socket (if socket bonus is worse than 20 agility) Delicate Inferno Ruby
BM stat weights
One of the subtle yet huge changes made to the hunter class in Cataclysm is that our pets now inherit all of our DPS stats, at least in part. This makes some substantial changes to the way that we calculate our stat weights. As always, your stat weights will change not just with your spec but with every single change you make to your gear. I'm going to provide some general qualitative BM stat weights as a guideline to point you in the right direction.
BM stat weights, from highest to lowest:
- ranged DPS
- agility
- hit rating
- crit rating
- haste rating
- mastery

I noticed that your talent build here is different than the one listed in "Leveling a Cataclysm Hunter" from a few days back. So wich is really the better build?
QQinsider Dec 17th 2010 9:44AM
Levelling builds and max dps builds are not the same thing.
Frostheim Dec 17th 2010 12:39PM
Aye, one is an optimal build for leveling, the other is an optimal build for raiding. So they're both right : )
Thiron Dec 17th 2010 4:32AM
It seems that Focus Fire can't be cast while you're on GCD, even though it doesn't cost a GCD to cast. Or is it just me?

"Not only does Steady Shot do less damage than Cobra Shot"
Can some theorycrafter 'xplain this? cuz I'm a confuse lil' dwarf right now.
My tooltips say (Ifrom memory - i'm at work atm):
steady shot - 110% normalized weapon dmg + 400something arcane dmg, + 9 focus
cobra shot - 100% weapon dmg + 370something nature dmg+ 9 focus + 3 seconds added to SS
are the tooltips wrong or am I mising something? cuz it seems to me in terms of damage, SS > CS
Frostheim Dec 17th 2010 12:24PM
Steady Shot does physical damage, and so is reduced by armor. Cobra Shot is not.
icepyro Dec 17th 2010 6:00PM
To clarify what Frost said: CS is not + nature damage, it's damage all in the form of nature damage. SS is not + arcane damage, just plus damage, so it's all physical. Physical damage is reduced by armor, nature damage is not.

not to nitpick or anything, but your focus fire link should probably be http://www.wowhead.com/spell=82692 instead of the one you have now :)

my BM spec is waaay different than this one.
i actually have two BM specs; a raid spec and a solo spec.
and just putting in an image of the spec doesn't really help much for those that don't know what the talents actually are.

As intricate as the BM rotation is, can any part of it be macro'd? My understanding of macros and my ability to write ones that work are two different things, however, so is there a place to go to copy macros that actually work?
Elvgren Dec 17th 2010 1:50PM
Hopefully the days of single button dps are done. BM's priority list is not so complex it can't be pretty easily managed manually ... and that gives you a lot more flexibility.
Gimmlette Dec 17th 2010 2:00PM
@Elvgren. Oh I agree and even in Wrath, I was never one to have my rotation completely macro'd as I knew a few hunters did. It's just that at times, I feel overwhelmed by the number of buttons available for me to push. I have had moments when Focus Fire, Kill Command, Kill Shot and every other shot have been either off cool-downs waiting for my finger to hit them or procc'd and lit up waiting for me to click them. I know I'm doing less damage because I'm overrun with choices. I'm just wondering if having a macro for the occasional time that I'm faced with everything ready to go would help me produce more dps.

Wow, I am such a hunter noob. I just started a worgen hunter and I took skinning as a gathering profession. Why, you ask? Well someone in general chat said it is good for hunters, but I'm not sure why they said it. So I got to thinking and when I realized that i needed meat to feed my pet, it just seemed natural that skinning would complement that need. But then in the course of playing I found out that you can feed your pet stacks of meaty food bought from a vendor. I don't have to kill it myself. Now I find out that you can glyph yourself out of needing meat altogether. lol.
SillyString Dec 29th 2010 9:00AM
Leatherworking uses those skins, and hunters can make a lot of good armor, armor enhancements and their own personal enhancements. On the hunter I first got to 80 I was a Leatherworker the entire time, and making my own stuff was fun and very helpful, not to mention the special buffs from Arctic Furs.
Besides, Master of Anatomy (the Skinning bonus) gels very nicely with Hunters. More inherent critical hit rating is always nice.

I have a question- for strait DPS (for both my pet and me), what is the best BM pet? I ran some target practice with a Devilsaur, a Spirit Beast, and a Corehound for the control, (as he has no attack buff/crit buff and I didn't pop Hysteria, as I have a shaman pet for that atm). The Spirit Beast came out on top for me, with the Devilsaur next and Corehound last. Are there any other pets that do better?
Darthregis Dec 20th 2010 3:06PM
Just a though for testing; you'd probably want to look at ALL ferocity pets. And I would probably recommend standardizing the test. (eg: Same amount of time for each test, as similar a shot "rotation" as possible, etc.) I would also run this the same test for each pet, maybe 5 times and then average them, which should minimize any misleading RNG variances.
That said, and if I recall correctly, cats and wolves were pretty high up on the list for Wrath. Those might be worth some testing, as well. With the buffs pets provide now, I'm not quite sure how well things balance out, but it's a start.
Frostheim Dec 20th 2010 3:20PM
Well, the best dps pet for a group or raid is going to be the one that brings the buff that benefits the group as a whole the most.
If you're only interested in the buff that helps you the most, that is the str/agility buff provided by the cat/spirit beast.
furrama Dec 23rd 2010 12:37PM
@ Darth
I did all that. I didn't check cats or wolves because I didn't need to. Cats and Spirit Beasts have the exact same buff, but the spirit beast also has a heal that has saved it and me in a pinch before, so why would I use a cat? As for the wolf it's exactly the same as the devilsaur's buff but the devilsaur also has a healing reducer, so why as a BM would I bring a wolf?
Pets have been equalized, as long as they have the same talents the pets in the same family, (ferocity, cunning), are going to do the same amount of base damage. It's the buffs and extras that the 51 point talent pets bring that make them superior to their normal counterparts. This is why I only tested the three ferocity exotic pets.
Depending on group makeup and situation I'll be bringing many different things, (Silithid, Shale Spider, Worm), but if nothing else is needed I wanted to know which pet would help me (and nicely the other physical dps classes) out the most. The Spirit Beast will be my 'single target must die now' buddy.

I don't want to disagree with you here...but I don't agree with your methods on Serpent Sting. Cobra Shot doesn't refresh enough focus to make it a valid tool. The only time I've used it is during a boss, where the extra time can be warranted right at the beginning of the sting. The cast time is painful, and the talent Improved Serpent Sting added to BM takes care of the damage lost. Then one Steady Shot gives back the amount of focus lost by not using Cobra Shot, AND enough to make up for using Serpent Sting again.
Frostheim Dec 20th 2010 3:49PM
Cobra Shot and Steady Shot regen the exact same amount of focus -- 9 focus per hit. However, Cobra Shot also extends the Serpent Sting duration *and* does more damage than Steady Shot.
Only MM ever wants to use Steady Shot.
