Breakfast Topic: Is your race or faction choice based on sticking with friends?

I'll admit it: I'm a gnome-aholic. If I had my way, every single one of my characters would be a gnome. My warlock? Originally a gnome. My rogue? Also used to be a gnome. My hunter? Sometimes I dream at night of a gnome, pink pigtails bouncing, as she charges into battle riding her devilsaur pet. They're just so cute!
That said, since moving in with my current roommates, I've found that there is no way I can express my gnome love. Both of my roomies are die-hard Hordies, and in order to play together with them, I've had to transfer all of my beloved gnomes into not-so-beloved Horde equivalents. Not that there's nothing to love in the Horde (I would marry a troll and adore goblins!), but sometimes when I'm in a battleground and I see a gnome charging, I ... I just can't find it in my heart to melt his/her adorable face off.
Sometimes I fantasize about transferring all of my characters back to the Alliance and making them all gnomes again or making myself a secret gnome toon. However, I've realized that I would miss playing with my friends too much. Sure, if I rolled a gnome, I would still be able to talk to them, but I wouldn't be able to run a few random heroics with them, pop into Silvermoon for some RP or ask them to run my level 23 alt through a dungeon so I can get all the loots for myself.
So what about you? Have you ever rolled a certain race or class in order to fit in with your friends?

| No, I do my own thing. |

While my faction is always based on the group of people I'm lingering with at the time, my race on that faction is always attributed to me. That said, I value aesthetics more than racials.

Once you go troll, you never reroll. Taz'dingo!

I've been playing since the first month of vanilla and, before the game even began, I knew I wanted to play a Forsaken Warlock.

I was a diehard hordie all the way until I figured out my RLF's were in a hardcore Alliance raiding guild. I switched my main, a far superior troll shaman into a lowly draeni, got instantly invited, and have been enjoying the benefits of both ever since. But though I enjoy playing with my buds, I secretly hate the Alliance scum I now play with. When running through ICC after Saurfang, I always shed a tear for the Overlord. I miss my trollie shaman.

^-- this, a thousand times this! I too secretly hate myself and my brethren. For the Horde!

Dude, if you hate it so much, switch back.

Lol, silly horde. As long as you have the backstabbing sylvannas and the obnoxious garrosh, I'll stick with my true brotherhood and alliance. Even if king wrynn is a bit crazy.

I too am Horde at heart but most of my friends play alliance (no they don' t deserve a capital letter). Most importantly my wife plays alliance. Sigh...my lvl 80 hunter in PvP gear has to sit on the side lines while my alliance hunter moves slowly on through cat a content. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the goblins will lure her to the horde once and for all. FOR THE HORDE!!!!!!

I'm much the opposite. I've known quite a few people who play Alliance, including the person who introduced me to the game, but I've never created an Alliance character.
Just recently some RL friends of mine became interested in the game. I told them to play whatever they want, but not to talk to me about it if they play Alliance.
It's insane because I know that the people who play Alliance are the same people who play Horde. There are 12 million subscribers. While I'm sure there isn't a 50/50 split, the sheer number of people playing pretty much guarantees that there isn't much difference between people who play the Horde and people who play Alliance. That's what I know though, intellectually. That doesn't change the fact that I hate the Alliance. I hate it more than anything else in game or in my actual life. I hate it with a pure, white-hot, unquenchable hatred that I've never felt for anything yet and am unlikely to feel for anything else.
It may be because it is entirely virtual, invented, and when you get down to it, doesn't really exist, that I feel free to hate it as much as I do.

I would to roll all my toons into worgen, easily the best looking race in the game right now. Unfortunately I am a be all and end all Horde player and all my friends in the guild are too.
Chetti Dec 17th 2010 10:20AM
Worgen males are quite awesome looking. However, someone forgot to make the females fierce looking. Of course, my worgen is female.. but I really wish they looked slightly more like the males.. with some kind of fierce look on their face.

No way, the fact is that i absolutely cannot play a horde race. it used to be because i couldn't get into their starter zones, now it's because i have developed an extreme(probably unhealthy) hatred for the horde.
Shadhavar Dec 17th 2010 8:15AM
It's always a difficult issue, because social life is such a huge part of this game. So many memories are defined not by the game alone, but by the people that you experience it with.
But at the same time, so are aesthetics. I can't play an mmo for hours and hours on end if I don't like what I'm seeing in front of me. I can't commit dozens of hours on improving a character's gear if I don't LIKE that character - it's as simple as that.

I started Alliance because that's where the person who got me into the game was, but I've always had Horde alts as well, and now I'm somewhat balanced.
And at this point, my decision is expressly based on -me-. My guild entertained the idea of going Horde a while back and as much as I dreaded it I started considering finding a new guild. Fortunately they ended up not, but my main isn't going to Faction Change ever. They are what they are, that is always how I will see them, and I just couldn't bring myself to change it, let alone screw up my achievements/mounts in the process.
So.. I guess I'm half and half. I do like to play with my friends, but I don't ever change a decision I do not want to change to do so.

I originally rolled on a random server as alliance with one of my RL friends. When the guild we wound up in split, half the members moved to a new server as horde. We moved with them. SInce then, my RL friend and several other RL friend's have rolled alliance on the same server, and would love for me to join them. But I've got a whole guild of people I've known for almost 6 years, so I'm sticking with horde.

For me it's dwarves. I just feel this certain sense of pride and connection when I play one. As soon as Cata hit I turned my lock into a dwarf and just flew around for almost 30 minutes /cheering and raising a /drink to other players, NPCs etc. Not to mention we are uncommonly good looking. =D Would I faction change if all my friends did and leave my dwarven buddies behind? NO WAY, NO HOW.... hic!
Seviar Dec 17th 2010 8:32AM
This is the exact same situation I'm in. I love my dwarf hunter, nothing can ever tare(spelling error?) me away from him. I love the lore and backstory for dwarves. They alway seem happy and cheery, but are serious when they need to be.
If I ever went horde though, all troll basically for the exact same reason above.
Helston Dec 17th 2010 8:43AM
It's 'tear'.
Apologies that I have nothing else to add, but he asked for the correct spelling.
Aaron Dec 17th 2010 9:02AM
Yeah the hunter class is how it all started for me. I had a human lock, human pally, and NE druid then I rolled a dwarf hunter alt and just fell in love with the race and the class. Next thing I knew most of my toons were race changing to dwarves. Funny how that happens. ;-) I now have a dwarf shammy sitting at level 30 and I've made sure he looks like a hippie. Imagine Willie Nelson as a dwarf shaman.
Making sure they all had brewmaster titles http://www.wowhead.com/item=23587/mirrens-drinking-hat was also a big deal to me.
