Breakfast Topic: Is your race or faction choice based on sticking with friends?

I'll admit it: I'm a gnome-aholic. If I had my way, every single one of my characters would be a gnome. My warlock? Originally a gnome. My rogue? Also used to be a gnome. My hunter? Sometimes I dream at night of a gnome, pink pigtails bouncing, as she charges into battle riding her devilsaur pet. They're just so cute!
That said, since moving in with my current roommates, I've found that there is no way I can express my gnome love. Both of my roomies are die-hard Hordies, and in order to play together with them, I've had to transfer all of my beloved gnomes into not-so-beloved Horde equivalents. Not that there's nothing to love in the Horde (I would marry a troll and adore goblins!), but sometimes when I'm in a battleground and I see a gnome charging, I ... I just can't find it in my heart to melt his/her adorable face off.
Sometimes I fantasize about transferring all of my characters back to the Alliance and making them all gnomes again or making myself a secret gnome toon. However, I've realized that I would miss playing with my friends too much. Sure, if I rolled a gnome, I would still be able to talk to them, but I wouldn't be able to run a few random heroics with them, pop into Silvermoon for some RP or ask them to run my level 23 alt through a dungeon so I can get all the loots for myself.
So what about you? Have you ever rolled a certain race or class in order to fit in with your friends?
| Yes, and I'm having a good time with it. | |

| Yes, and I sometimes miss what my characters could have been. | |
| No, I do my own thing. |

I'm the same, and it's absolutely Dwarves for me too. I have a lady dwarf of each class except druid (wtb dorf mookins!) and I wouldn't race/faction change them for anything. My main is currently levelling archaeology and has just had the 'Chalice of the Mountain Kings' pop up as her next dwarvish artifact. On use it spawns 4 lady dwarves who dance for you. I can't wait to have my own dwarven posse!

For me its a class, not so much a race, but I really like druids. All druids. :) I've got an 83 night elf, a 72 tauren, and a 13ish worgen. A troll in my future.
Now, as far as race is concerned, I'm partial to night elves. I've got the druid, a dk (71, I really can't get into leveling her), and a mage (20something, rolled just after the shattering but got sidetracked by the cataclysm). I also like dwarves, I've got a dwarf hunter that I absolutely love.

My faction is alliance as that is whay my RL friends played when I started playing. Every now and then I keep lobbying for a faction change to horde, though i know it's not going to happen as now the guild has 40+ accounts and most people like alliance for RP reasons. But i have fun playing with them and I would not leave the guild ever.
I know I can stay in touch with some of them with RealID, but i would miss so much playing with them, that it is out of the question.
But it bugs me that I haven't won a single battleground since i got to 85 on tuesday, nor alliance has had Tol'Barad since the begging of this expansion. But my queues are instant, YAY! :(

When I first started playing, I rolled a gnome mage. I love gnomes too! I played for about a year without ever finding a group I could really play with. I had friends that were alliance, but they were mostly interested in other aspects of the game than I was.
Finally, out of pure frustration, I rolled a horde toon. Within two weeks, I was in a guild with a bunch of people who have since become close friends. I consider transferring to alliance from time to time. I even have a gnome rogue. He's been twelve five for years. Every time I feel like playing a gnome, I jump on him and hang out in Ironforge. It doesn't take long before the gnome joy wears off, and I find myself heading back to Orgrimmar to apologize to Thrall for doubting.
Well, now that Garrosh is there, maybe I'll just apologize to myself.
"Serve the Horde or be crushed beneath it!" What a dick.

So very much. Family plays Alliance and to play with them most my toons are Alliance. I much prefer the Horde they are so much more interesting. Alliance has humans, elves and dwarves. Just like a million other games. I always liked the playing Orcs back in RTS Warcraft.

My race, no, but I sure chose Horde so I can play with my husband, who chose Horde to play with some friends. So yeah, I guess I did. But I love Horde. I will make a worgen just for the fun of it though..

I play Horde to play with my SO. Couples that play together stay together!
That said, I'm a Hordie anyways. Now that we have Goblins, I don't need a gnome or dwarf. Besides, Goblins are better looking, anyways. ;)

I *want* to try the Horde, I really do. But after trying and trying, I, like the OP, always come back to the gnomes. The fact that my wife, and my fantastic guild, is Alliance also is a factor.
Sadly, many of my gnome bruthas seem to have been bitten by wolves. I think there's only three of us left.

im the opposite. i played alliance since launch before rerolling horde with friends midway thru lk. i personally dont give two sh*ts about the horde vs alliance thing. its always weird reading guildies go "f*cking human!" which makes me always wonder if they have an identity crisis. and i do miss the alliance cities every so often. let's not kid ourselves, many of the horde cities and towns are downright crappy (subjective, i know). iron spikes, canvas roofs, or glowing green crap everywhere...it's all fascinating to observe the faux intimidating architecture, but it gets old. not only old...but annoying. try flying around the undercity...it sucks. so i log onto my old alliance toons every so often to check out the new cities. other than those gripes however, i still do have more fun now since i'm with friends, regardless of faction

It would be interesting to see how many people would move server if it was not for friends or the cost. I am on an imbalanced (not in my favour) pvp server and hate it (was choice of husband and son, who moved on). If I could afford to transfer I'd do it today. I'd gladly pay in WOW gold, but real life cash - don't make it as easily as WOW gold sadly.

One of my RLF got me into wow back during BC. She played horde side on a pvp server and said her guild really needed a bear tank. So, I started leveling a tauren druid. Had a blast the whole way to 70. Unfortunately by the time I got there and started gearing, she had taken a break from the game and the guild had dissolved. But I was hooked.

I have a simmilar story. I rolled Horde to play with some RL friends. I got to level cap and they quit.
I found a guild, made some good friends there had some times, good and bad. Then, my brother in-law convinced me to transfer to his server. So I did, and a week later he quit.
Later I foun dout the first batch of RL friends were back and playing Alliance. I rolled a character with them, but they didn't stick around long enough for me to get it to lvl cap.
Then I found out the old GM of the guild that took me in after those good for nothing friends o' mine quit on me the first time was back playing Alliance...
Luckily, I had decided to level an Alliance mage before Cata so I could se the world before it changed. I transfered it to my old GM's server and now have my Hordies and Allies separated.
I will level to 85 on each faction and then see where I stand. I can't expend any more time or money chasing people around who don't stay still long enough for me to actualy play with them much.

i had the same thing happen to me. i didnt start playing until WotLK and my friends were all horde. i leveled to level cap and started gearing up and then the friend that begged me to play took a break and the guild we all joined fell apart. the other friends i had on the server decided they needed a server and faction change. i made a dk to play with them and still do every now and then but i enjoy playing my orc hunter more than anything. i did recently start leveling a worgen druid to play with them and it is fun so we will see what happens.

Im kind of stuck in the middle. First, I stick with the character I like most. I know for sure I wouldnt be able to level, gear, or care if I had to play a toon that I hated because it was on the same fraction as friends. At the moment, everyone I know has either fraction or realm transferred, so its pretty lonely leveling all by myself. I had another friend offer full guild privileges if I changed my main to horde, but I absolutely love how my human pally looks, and would hate it if she were to become a skinny blood elf or a cow.
I kinda feel like the captain going down with the ship. :(

I do have some friends who are die hard horde pigs, and I have one thing to say to them.
GLORY TO THE ALLIANCE!
Wafflesan Dec 17th 2010 12:02PM
Alliance scum, victory or death!!! FOR THE HORDE!!!!
Saekeion Dec 17th 2010 8:48AM
When I first started playing the game, all my buddies played Alliance. So, a Night Elf Rogue was created. I tried Horde off and on, but always missed hanging out with my pals. I take a break to play "Hordies" now and then, but thankfully I can still talk to my friends with the Real ID thing. But still, I guess I'm Alliance at heart, thanks to many years of playing Alliance toons.
Heimdallw32 Dec 17th 2010 8:48AM
My first character was Alliance, because the friend that got me into the game was also Alliance. By the time I got fully into the game, changing my focus over to Horde just...didn't seem like an option. Alliance feels like home for me. Nowadays I have a few Horde characters because I have friends on both sides (and my sister is Horde! Sibling rivalry to the next level!), and it's fun, but I don't think it will ever feel like home to me, more like a vacation.
As for race? I go my own way with that, and none of my friends have ever tried to convince me to play a certain race or another (we all play what we like, and thanks to RealID we can keep in touch easily with alts across realms, since some of us have run out of character slots on our main realm). Like a previous poster, I choose race more for aesthetic reasons (animations are a big factor for me.).
Brodi Dec 17th 2010 8:50AM
While I dabble with the occasional Draenei (and Worgen now), the vast majority of my characters are Horde because I find most Alliance races boring and can't get over that I actually have to cooperate with Gnomes instead of attacking them on sight. I'm the main reason most of my friends play Horde, not the other way around. But there's no option in the poll for your friends conforming to you. :)
mike Dec 17th 2010 8:58AM
I hate horde. Not from a lore or loyalty perspective, but from an artistic perspective. Characters look messy, environments feel inefficient and dirty and I'm not a fan of the music. I am an alliance guy. I like being an underdog, I like the clean lines, the city environments, thr character art.
Unfortunately the only two RL friemds I have playing the game are horde, so I naturally have a troll Druid and goblin hunter for game opportunity and efficienty sake. I will roll a worgen Druid to get back to my roots.
Oh, blood elves are the only good looking horde. Yeah, i said it!! I am digging my goblin character model though.
