Must-have PvP talents for warlocks in Cataclysm, Part 2

- Bane Basic cast time reduction. A bit hefty at three points, but a .5-second cast time shaved off the spells you'll cast often is a worthy investment.
- Emberstorm Not quite as impacting as Bane, but its minute reduction to Incinerate's glacial casting time could come in handy. Two points here is optional. Just remember that you'll be casting fairly different spells in PvP compared to your high DPS rotation or priority in PvE.
- Aftermath It's a small proc, but since you'll tend to use Rain of Fire for AoE situations such as crowding the flag, getting a 2-second stun out of it should be gravy. What makes this talent decent is the daze effect that gets rolled into Conflagrate.
- Backdraft You'll be standing still and casting long cast spells a lot more often than either of the other two specs, so you'll want anything that gives you a bit of haste. This procs off Conflagrate and should allow you to stand still for shorter periods of time.
- Shadowburn This talent is amazing for PvP because it gives you some sort of Kill Shot or Hammer of Wrath ability. If you time it right, you'll manage to refresh your soul shards pretty often on the battlefield.
- Soul Leech You'll want every ability that heals you, so while raiders will want this for the replenishment buff, you'll want it for the sweet 4 percent health return from casting Shadowburn, Soul Fire, and Chaos Bolt.
- Backlash The sad reality is that at some point in time, you'll get beat upon by some melee class. Make it worth your while by putting points in Backlash to proc an instant Shadow Bolt or Incinerate. It tends to proc fairly often, although it has an internal cooldown of 8 seconds.
- Nether Ward and Nether Protection Excellent mitigation talents against spellcasters and you'll want every bit of protection in a PvP environment. The best thing for me about this talent is that it should remind you to always have some warlock armor up, as well as a Shadow Ward.
- Shadowfury The absolute best PvP talent in the tree, available for a mere one point. The new Shadowfury has a shorter, 20-second cooldown and I probably don't need to remind you of how good a ranged, AoE, 3-second stun is for PvP.
Now get to the trainers and pick out your PvP talents, because next week we'll take a look at the outdoor PvP zone of Cataclysm, Tol Barad.

Great article Zach! One problem though, Bane links to Aura to Foreboding. Other than that, everything looks awesome!
Harvoc Dec 20th 2010 7:19PM
Oops, it's Aura of Foreboding.

PVP is indeed super fun right now. A huntard and I went mano el mano over the flag on the Twilight Beach a little while ago (well, as mano el mano as one can get between a belf and a gnome mage). Good times.
I'm contractually forbidden from saying that worgen look good in warlock gear.
I'm also contractually required to say that warlocks stink.

i'm new to being a warlock - i figured the health recovery and bonus spellpower from fel armor was better than demon armor for pvp.
how wrong am I?

It's mostly situational, but an Affliction Warlock with Demon Armor on would have an increased threshold on healing through spells such as Drain Life, Death Coil, and Haunt. The Shadow damage boost from just being in the Affliction spec further improves survivability against the enemy. After you kill [or in my case, HELP kill since I find it more beneficial and sufficient to stick with a battalion rather than go solo] the enemy, you can go back to 100% health easily with Soul Harvest.
Lately in PVE dungeons, I've found myself utilizing the bonuses from Demon Armor to give my healer a break to fill up his or her mana bar while I proceed to pop Demon Armor, Life Tap myself back to 100%, and then Soul Harvest back at least 80% of my own health.

Your wrong.
Well specially as affliction you will want Demon Armour up.
For the other 2 specs i guess its debatable on which armour you should use, however i would take demon armour.

Fel Armor used to be a huge spellpower boost that scaled with Spirit. Now it doesn't, and Spirit is even more useless. The only time I ever use it is when I forget to being food/mana juice, so I life tap to double-digit health, slap on Fel Armor, and fly up into the air and wait a few minutes.

With all due respect, I hope this does not count as the Warlock column of the month.
We have seen so few of those that I'm getting discouraged :/

Yeah, interest in warlocks seems to be waning - very few comments as well. We've been reassured many times that everything will be "balanced at 85". There's a fair number at that level already, so there should be some data in, or some anecdotal experiences at least - I'd love to know how my little lvl81 lock is going to fare on the meters and in the BG's when he arrives. Honestly, I'm ashamed to say I'd kinda left him sitting in Dal until now because I was so dispirited after the great 12% nerf (not a complete loss - did start a worgen drood tho). So - state of the union for 'locks at 85? Maybe the next monthly? How 'bout it?

Thanks everyone! This will make me even less skwishy.

When can we expect an article about how to win Tol Barad as an attacker?
(lol)

Obviously WoWInsider is not interested in Locks as readers.
Dully noted :/
In this case, here is a link that may interest Locks:

Do they still do a WARLOCK forum anymore?
