Spiritual Guidance: Discipline priest 101, page 3

Gems
The following are recommended gems for priests.
- Brilliant Inferno Ruby intellect (red)
- Sparkling Ocean Sapphire spirit (blue)
- Purified Demonstone intellect/spirit (purple)
- Zen Dream Emerald spirit/mastery (green)
- Artful Ember Topaz intellect/mastery (orange)
- Potent Ember Topaz intellect/critical strike (orange)
- Reckless Ember Topaz intellect/haste (orange)
You may end up with a bit of a mishmash of different gem types on your gear trying to get your socket bonuses and the gems you like, but at the beginning of an expansion, this isn't a big deal since each of our desirable stats is lacking, anyway.
For meta gems, the following will be the most useful to a PvE discipline priest.
- Ember Shadowspirit Diamond For players who don't want to use a Wrath meta gem, this will probably be the meta of choice. This gem provides a nice buff to intellect as well as mana pool.
- Revitalizing Shadowspirit Diamond This gem provides throughput through additional crit effect (this is not the same as additional crit rating) and spirit. Definitely appealing to disc priests who find themselves high on crit and want to see a bit more out of their crit healing.
- Insightful Earthsiege Diamond This Wrath meta gem did not see an upgrade in Cataclysm, but with mana being in short supply, I expect to see many priests defaulting back to this dated gem. The proc chance is really low (5 percent on a 15-second internal cooldown), but it returns 600 mana when you do get lucky. Definitely appealing in Cataclysm.
Reforging
Reforging gear isn't too necessary on discipline priests because we currently use all our stats in some way. If you have an undesirable stat like hit, then definitely reforge that, but overall, you won't need to do too much reforging if you want to stay balanced. If you are having trouble in one area, though (mana, more than likely), then reforge whatever you can to spirit. For secondary stats, tend toward what you think you are lacking, as well as your role and playstyle.
Glyphs
With the new glyph system, you can stock up on all the glyphs you may potentially use and swap between them whenever you please. The glyphs below are glyphs you should learn as a discipline priest.
Prime
- Glyph of Penance Always keep this glyph inscribed, as it reduces the cooldown of one of our strongest heals. Probably the only truly mandatory glyph disc priests have.
- Glyph of Power Word: Barrier A must-have for raiding disc priests, this glyph increases all healing done underneath the barrier. That means the heals of other healers, as well. In 5-mans, this can be very beneficial, but since you're the only healer putting anything out, you can pass if you prefer something else. Mandatory for raiding, optional for 5-man.
- Glyph of Power Word: Shield The free heal from this glyph can and does add up. Not necessarily mandatory, but very close.
- Glyph of Flash Heal Using this glyph is going to be dependent on how often you use Flash Heal. Optional.
- Glyph of Prayer of Healing The new changes to Divine Aegis and Prayer of Healing gives incentive to cast Prayer of Healing, which means this glyph is great, especially in 5-mans where it serves as a strong alternative to Glyph of Power Word: Barrier. Optional.
- Glyph of Dispel Magic This is an incredibly strong glyph. You have to cast Dispel Magic anyway, so to toss in a decent-sized, free heal, you'll get a much more rewarding spell in your toolbox.
- Glyph of Divine Accuracy This glyph is mandatory if you want to use Evangelism and Archangel.
- Glyph of Holy Nova This is a circumstantial glyph because the mana efficiency of Holy Nova is so poor. If you have something you need to spam down or up with Holy Nova, then this is your choice.
- Glyph of Mass Dispel Dispelling is very important in the expansion, so if you find an encounter that needs it, this glyph is what you want to use. However, this Mass Dispel is quite costly and the Glyph of Dispel Magic heals individual targets. If you only need to dispel a few people, it's better to individually dispel them.
- Glyph of Psychic Scream This glyph is helpful but not mandatory. It makes using Psychic Scream much safer in a dungeon, but when do you use Psychic Scream in a dungeon? Circumstantially: either to counter a specific mechanic where an instant cast crowd control works best, or when there is an emergency and you want to go above and beyond to help out your group.
- Glyph of Fading Though you won't be using Fade very often, when you do this glyph will reduce the amount of mana it costs, which is quite handy in a mana strapped world.
- Glyph of Fortitude Similarly to the reasoning for taking the last glyph, Glyph of Fortitude will cut down the cost of buffing. This is really important if someone dies, is battle rezzed, and needs buffs. If you have a shadow priest in the raid, it's generally better to have him buff, but if you're all the group has you'll want this.
- Glyph of Levitate This glyph is now actually quite important as opposed to a novely. Cataclysm has added a vertical plane to combat, which means you can now jump or Levitate over certain mechanics. Mobs in Stonecore, for example, have an earthquake attack you can avoid by levitating your party. Also, in Throne of the Four Winds, you can use Levitate to quickly move over the blizzard patches in the fight against Al'Akir without taking damage.
- Glyph of Shackle Undead You can inscribe this glyph when you need it, and only when you need it. At level 85 I've used it a lot in Shadowfang Keep since there are lots of undead mobs there.
- Back Greater Intellect (for tailors: Lightweave Embroidery or Darkglow Embroidery)
- Chest Peerless Stats or Exceptional Spirit
- Feet Haste or Mastery
- Fingers Enchanters only: Intellect
- Hands Mastery or Haste
- Head Arcanum of Hyjal
- Legs Powerful Ghostly Spellthread
- Off-hand Superior Intellect
- Shoulders Greater Inscription of Charged Lodestone (for scribes: Felfire Inscription)
- Waist Ebonsteel Belt Buckle
- Weapon Power Torrent or Heartsong (some players may also like Hurricane)
- Wrists Exceptional Spirit or Speed
That's it. I plan to periodically come back to this article and make small adjustments as needed. None of my conclusions are particularly concrete, just based on past experience, current observation, and a little foundation from our friends at Elitist Jerks. There are a lot of different directions priests can go from here, and they need to be explored and tested. There could be a far better way to do things than what I've laid out in portions of this guide, and as the discussion continues, I will try to adjust for that. If you have feedback, suggestions, or anything else to improve upon this guide, please leave them for me in the comments.

I adore my priest, just a few comments from what I've seen healing heroics and ten man raids so far.
In heroics disc feels like the more comfortable spec for me. I use an A/A spec that skips strength of soul in favor of grabbing inspiration. I typically use inner fire as a buff instead of inner will simply because I am not casting enough instant spells for the mana reduction to be worth the loss in throughput.
I use greater heal much more than most other disc priest seem to be. With train of thought and inner focus macroed into both GH and PoH the mana cost isn't greatly higher and tank healing feels much more stable. When damage is high enough to require direct healing I default to Penance/GH and seldom need to use flash as a result. Because I am casting GH earlier I value haste less and crit more. During periods of low damage or if the boss is debuffed to take increased damage I switch to smite, only burning archangel when I am ready to switch back to direct heals.
In ten man raids I am getting much better results from holy, however I have a suspicion that the quick reactions and superior cooldowns of disc will make the spec much stronger in 25 man raids.

In the enchants section you've missed the int enchant on bracers that leatherworkers get.

Brilliant article.
The only thing I would add is I am making a conscerted effort to ask mages for Mana Studdle.
Then in Dungeons I am pre shielding (The Whole Group) and POM the tank. I then immedietly sit and eat mana struddle while the fight begins to recoup the mana. By doing this the first 5-10 seconds of the fight is absorbed while I sit. I then enter the fight with full mana and the first part of the fight done.
I know its a dodge but any little trick helps.

I'm a big fan of the food /drink that gives you 3+% of your max mana per second. Fruitcake here I come!

Here you speak of using Strength of Soul to reduce the duration of Weakened Soul so you can get more usage from Rapture... but the 12 second internal cooldown of Rapture is something you may have overlooked. If you spam Heal on the tank to reduce Weakened Soul and are able to apply another PW:S sooner, it may be consumed before Rapture is off cooldown.
It's great to be able to apply another shield that much faster, especially if you have been stacking tons of Mastery, but if you're applying shields every 8-10 seconds then you're effectively missing out on Rapture procs and that makes PW:S a less efficient spell.
Dawn Moore Dec 21st 2010 12:09PM
Weakened Soul has a 15 second duration, Rapture is 12. Assume you shield a target. You can't shield them again for another 15 seconds. If you cast heal on them once you can though, this is how I mean that you'll maximize your Rapture usage.
Dawn Moore Dec 21st 2010 12:14PM
Also, efficiency of PW:S does not include Rapture procs. It's still more efficient than most spells.
In general though, if you're healing anything other than a 5-man you will have more than one shield up at a time. This means you can't quite precise science your Rapture procs. Unless you watch your scrolling combat text like a hawk and only put one shield out at a time, it's much better to get as many shields up on as many targets taking damage as possible.

Heal is back? Goodness . . .where did I put that old relic. Oh there it is! Next to Healing Touch. /wipes off dust. Good as new.

Great article. I am currently only healing 5-man heroics. I do use renew, although it is no longer specced. It is only used in situations where any deviation from paying attention to my tank will mean death, and someone needs light patching up.
Speaking of tank damage. I NEVER use heal. It doesn't heal enough for tanks IMO. Gheal is my go to heal, and because of that I totally dropped SoS. I am A/A specced, so I do throw out smites when the damage is not that bad. I suppose I could use heal on the dpsers instead of renew. But the cast time is so long and I hate taking my attention away from the tank for that long. I also do not want to have grace change targets. With the amount of health tanks have now, gheal never overheals.

I also wanted to mention the rapture tracking addon I use. It's called Ingela's Rapture. Very lightweight and wonderful to have.

"Glyph of Penance Always keep this glyph inscribed, as it reduces the cast time of one of our strongest heals."
I think you meant cooldown not cast time.
Other than that I'm confused as to why you think Surge of Light isn't a strong thing to talent into especially if you've gone with an A/A build (and you go on to say that it's better with a Heal build.) I know the non-crit factor is a downside, but a free heal is a free heal. Even one point in it would seem stellar compared to no points at all.

Because I'm tired when I write things and fixing those things now. /sigh

As so many others have said this is a great article and has inspired me to pick up my level 80 Disc Priest and get him into some Cata Dungoens.
However I am a little confised by this:
"Cooldowns are the spells Shadowfiend and Hymn of Hope. These two spells share synergy with one another and should be used one right after the other (Shadowfiend first, Hymn of Hope second) in order to maximize the amount of mana returned. The synergy comes from the fact that Shadowfiend restores mana based on your maximum mana pool, and Hymn of Hope raises your maximum mana pool; combine the two and you'll get more mana back than if you had used them separately."
If Shadowfiend restores mana based on maximum mana pool and Hymn of Hope raises maximum mana pool why would you not use Hymn of Hope first to return more mana?
Eyrythnul Dec 22nd 2010 10:11AM
The buff from Hymn of Hope only lasts 7 or 8 seconds if it ticks on you, so that would leave only that much time for your shadow fiend to return that much more mana. If you wait until you are low enough on mana to ensure a few ticks of Hymn of Hope, you send out your Shadowfiend first so that he's beating away an enemy while you get multiple ticks of the Hymn. When doing it this way you can just about double the amount of time you have the buff for because Hymn of Hope can hit you multiple times, thus refreshing the buff.

Hi, great article.
I'm a noob disc so I don't know what you meant at the top of page 2,
" The first is to stack up Evangelism through Smite until a 5-stack is acquired, then use Smite as your efficient heal to heal a tank instead of Heal. As long as your tank is the lowest health party member in melee, your Smite will heal him. "
I get the stack to 5 thing, but take it 'smite to heal' is wrong, and I'm thinking that you meant to use heal?, as it seems that Flash heal is to costly now for disc, either that or I have missed something else about smite healing, maybe through something in the talent tree?
Again I apologise about my noobness, Thx for a great article.
ZeroCool Jan 1st 2011 2:14PM
Because of the talent Atonement (which you take if you are Archangel specced), your smites heal the lowest health target nearby, which is usually the tank. Smite is slightly less efficient than Heal, and slightly quicker, but basically it replaces your need to use heal as the normal healing spell.
Flash heal used to be our bread and butter spell, but now its almost never used because of how inefficient it is.

Hey, Great post. It's both a fun and confusing time to play a disc priest and having this amount of quality information in one place is extremely helpful. I have a Question about our absorbs. Do they stack and if so how? Also do they stack with the damage reduction abillities of other classes? thanks in advance and thanks again for the great guide.
mryg15 Jan 1st 2011 10:45AM
Upon mention of the buff of Rapture from 2.5% to 6% I checked my tooltip and it still reflects 2.5%. Did Blizz "unbuff" Rapture since the post was made or simply not update the ingame tooltip?

Dawn, I have been reading you for a very long time, this is a wonderful article. Thank you for a consistently high standard. I think many people don't realise the amount of work that would have to go into your articles, I really appreciate it.
I am currently playing around with renew, and I have been very stubborn when it comes to heal, have yet to raid so I may soon have to bite the bullet there. I do intend to try it out, I love fixing with my spec and rotation and seeing how everything works, so if you ever want anything tested I'd be happy to help. xD
Right now you can call me crazy because I'm testing out a spec with improved renew, and inspiration over SoS. I am not only never out of mana, but I'm rarely below 70% even. I don't have particularly good gear. Owh, that felt a little egotistical, but it's true! I think the AA spec is fun, if you think of smite as a healing spell and macro it to suit your playstyle (like target focus' target) there should be no distration at all. It's fun having something to think about. In that respect I agree about not macroing Inner Focus to GH. I like it macro'd to PoH, though. =)
I want to know about rapture too, let's hope it's just a tooltip error!
On a side note: Renew can be good, it depends on your playstyle, current gear and spec. Remember folks this is a general article and I don't recall seeing 'omg I hate renew wtf' at any point. Just saying. ^^
Silkie Jan 8th 2011 1:08AM
I was reading the offical blog noting all the changes over the past week or so and I can't see anywhere that they have nerfed rapture again, it looks like just an un-updated tooltip! Hooray!
